The Australian Defence Force (ADF) said the soldier was riding in an armoured personnel carrier when he was struck by a tree branch.
The soldier received first aid from ambulance officers at the scene but was pronounced dead a short time later.
The soldier’s unit was taking part in training drill and no other personnel were injured.
The Defence Department has not released the soldier’s name or personal details, but has notified the family.
“The Army and broader Australian Defence Force community extends its deepest sympathies to the soldier’s family and friends,” Defence said in a statement.
“Defence will not be releasing any further information relating to the member’s personal or service history at this time.”
Australian Defence Welfare Association executive director Alf Jaugietis said it was a shock and huge loss for the military community.
“Expressing condolences for the soldier who seems to have lost his life through a sheer accident,” he said.
Mr Jaugietis said strict safety protocols were always practised at any military exercise.
“I personally can’t recall the last accident, but particularly a vehicle accident, training exercise, are conducted very carefully.”
A report will be prepared for the coroner and Queensland police are investigating the death.
