United flight to Texas makes ‘harrowing’ emergency landing

United Airlines Flight 1516 from Costa Rica to Houston suffered an engine failure after it overheated and had to make an emergency landing at Liberia airport on Monday.

Genessy, a radio DJ and father-of-four, said passengers were not told of the engine problem until after the plane had landed, but could tell something was wrong.

Recounting the experience on Facebook, he said: ‘We had to fly around in circles over the ocean for about an hour to burn off fuel and [the pilot] was only using one engine this whole time, I guess.

When we were flying in for the landing, the plane felt really wobbly. I fly a lot and something felt weird and wrong and I was already tense and everyone was nervous.

‘Right as we were about to land, apparently a wind sheer hit us and with only one engine the pilot couldn’t stabilize [the plane].

 Passenger Jody Genessy said the plane nearly crashed as it was hit with a gust of wind on landing, but the pilot saved it

‘It tipped one way and people on that side  said the wing almost hit [the ground] and we were going hundreds of miles per hour at that point.

‘The pilot corrected and the plane wobbled the other way and he just yanked it up and we went back up in the air.

‘We all thought we were going to crash. We all thought we were going to die.

‘You just think about kids being left without parents and your life ending way too early and it was really frightening.’

Speaking two hours after the plane landed, Genessy said he was  was still ‘shaken’ and ‘skittish’, though thankful to be alive.

Coalition Air Strikes kill 11 civilians fleeing ISIS in Raqqa, Syria

Airstrikes have killed at least 11 people – seven of them children – as they fled fighting between US-allied Syrian forces and Islamic State militants in Syria’s northern Raqqa province, witnesses and local activists said.

The strike appeared to have been launched by a US-led coalition, according to local activists.

Al-Qaida’s leader meanwhile urged his followers and other militants in Syria to unite and prepare for protracted jihad, or holy war, against what he called an ‘international satanic alliance,’ apparently referring to the Syrian government, its ally Russia, and the US, all of which are targeting the group.

Among the dead is a family of eight who were fleeing fighting in the northern Syrian town of Tabqa when their vehicle was struck, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which said the five children were between six months and 15 years old.

North Korea claims Darwin will be site of nuclear war

North Korea claims Darwin will be the site of a nuclear war, accusing the U.S. of using Australia to prepare for an attack on its territory.

The accusations were published in Rodong Sinmun, a newspaper of the ruling Worker’s Party of North Korea that publishes state propaganda.

Last week, 1,250 U.S. Marines arrived in Darwin for military training exercises with Australian and visiting Chinese forces.

The newspaper claimed the U.S. was ‘fanatically, crazily trying to optimise its nuclear war readiness’ using the port city.

‘This is the largest scale U.S. military presence in Australia after the Second World War,’ the newspaper wrote on Monday.

The state mouthpiece also slammed comments by Foreign Minister Julie Bishop advocating sanctions on the totalitarian regime and calling on it abandon its nuclear weapons program.

Rodong Sinmun said Ms Bishop was ‘blindly and zealously toeing the U.S. line’ as she ‘spouted a string of rubbish against the DPRK over its entirely just steps for self-defence’.

Better Call Saul s3 ep3 ‘Sunk Costs’ review: Expert visual storytelling

I’m softening to Better Call Saul as the third season progresses and starting to look forward to each new episode more.

It’s pleasing how slowly, carefully and meticulously the story unfolds, and while this does continue to verge on snail-paced or frustrating on occasion, for the most part, it’s very enjoyable being sucked into its world every week.

The show’s two central stories have now taken completely separate paths (that I’m sure will intersect toward the end of the season), with Mike deep into brooding, dusty, lo-fi MacGyver territory while Jimmy provides the show’s emotion, so tragicomic is his situation.

Chuck follows through on his promise to have the book thrown at Jimmy with great velocity in ‘Sunk Costs’, as the police arrive to arrest Jimmy for a list of charges (and did you notice the handcuff detail on his shoes? Classic Vince Gilligan/Peter Gould stuff). Adding insult to injury, Chuck – always convinced of his moral high ground and in denial of the truth: he’s an asshole – tells Jimmy he is having his brother busted for his own good, leading Jimmy to, in no uncertain terms, sever ties with Chuck, telling him very blankly that he will die alone.

Blood Drive [cars run on blood] trailer that’ll make Quentin Tarantino salivate

New TV series Blood Drive looks like something Quentin Tarantino would have dreamed up after a night of drinking.  Paying homage to the grindhouse films which so inspired the Death Proof director, the show – which will air on US channel Syfy – focuses on a cross-country death race featuring cars that, you guessed it, run on blood.

The series, set in 1999, will feature plenty of debauched action as can be glimpsed in the first trailer which sees lead stars Alan Ritchson and Christina Ochoa coming across all manners of crazy characters including monsters and cannibals.

In the trailer, a voiceover can be heard saying: “In the distant future of 1999, a global shortage has ravaged civilization. Instead of going green, we went red.“

Wangaratta siege ends with two found dead

A siege in the Victorian town of Wangaratta has ended in tragedy with two people found dead in a home hours after a gunshot was heard.

Police were called to Belle Avenue about 12.50pm on Tuesday after reports of a gunshot.

Two adults and six children left the house unharmed shortly after the shot was fired and are currently safe with police.

A siege ensued with police attempting to make contact with the man believed to be holed up in the house with a woman.

Officers entered the property about 5.10pm and found the pair dead.

The area was in lockdown throughout the day, with police surrounding the house and cordoned off the avenue.

Nearby residents in Belle, Irwin and Garnet avenues and Appin Street were asked to remain inside their homes.

Nearby St Michael’s Anglican Church first counsellor Luigi Bonacci says the neighbourhood is “tight-knit” and the deaths will have a big effect.

“It will be a sad time for everybody and people will be wary about what’s happened because where we are is a very tight-knit area, there are a lot of families and young kids,” he told AAP.

“Everyone seems pretty happy around here. This is not a good thing.”

Mr Bonacci says he is not sure who the people involved are yet, because police prevented residents getting close to the scene throughout the day.

Homicide Squad detectives from Melbourne have been called in to help local police investigate the deaths.

Police say they are not looking for anyone in relation to the shooting.

French election: Marine Le Pen stands down from National Front party

Far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen shocks France by announcing she is stepping down as leader of her party.

Ms Le Pen is still running for president on May 7, but is in the short term at least distancing herself from the National Front party (NF) founded by her father in 1972.

“I have always considered that the president of the republic is the president of all French people,” the 48-year-old told French television.

“Now is the moment to move from words to action and it is the reason why it seemed essential to me to take leave from the presidency of the National Front.”

The move is seen as an attempt by Ms Le Pen to broaden the appeal of her campaign beyond the far-right base of her party.

One opinion poll has the En Marche! candidate Emmanuel Macron ahead of his rival by 64-36, while another poll is sitting at 62-38.

Ms Le Pen has less than two weeks to turn those figures around.

Tom Hardy chases down moped thief and carries out citizen’s arrest

A witness has described how actor Tom Hardy was seen apprehending a suspected moped thief after pursuing him through gardens and a building site.

The Hollywood star looked like he “switched into superhero mode” as he collared the man before checking him for weapons after the chase near his home in Richmond, south west London, an onlooker told The Sun.

According to the newspaper, Hardy explained “I caught the c***t” shortly after finding the man.

With Hardy’s help two suspects were detained in connection with the theft, The Sun said.

The witness said two males had jumped a red light at a busy junction before crashing into a £50,000 Mercedes.

“Tom must have been walking down the road. He went off like a shot in pursuit and looked furious”, Arun Pullen, 22, said.

He added: “I asked Tom what happened and he told me he chased him through my back garden and caught him around the block – but the route was like an assault course.”

Hardy, 39, who starred in blockbusters The Dark Knight Rises and The Revenant and recently co-wrote and appeared in BBC drama Taboo, reportedly performed a citizen’s arrest on the fleeing suspect.

How this plastic-munching caterpillar could help save the earth

This wax worm can actually break down a non-biodegradable substance.

Even the smallest among us can be big heroes. Take the lowly wax worm, for instance.

The larva of the greater wax moth is considered a huge pest in Europe, because it acts as a parasite in bee colonies.

However, its bizarre eating habits may help solve a huge environmental problem.

See, the wax worm is apparently not averse to eating plastic. An amateur beekeeper in Spain discovered this when she plucked some of the pests from her beehives and put them in a plastic bag. The worms eventually ate little holes in the bag, chewing through the plastic at an alarming rate.

This led to a wonderful idea: What if these so-called pests could actually help break down polyethylene, a common and non-biodegradable plastic currently clogging up landfills around the world?

How good are these little grubs?

The beekeeper is actually Federica Bertocchini, a scientist at the Institute of Biomedicine and Biotechnology of Cantabria. She and two researchers from the University of Cambridge’s Department of Biochemistry put together a study to see just how good these little grubs were at passing the plastic, so to speak.

The answer? Very. The team found the wax worms broke down polyethylene plastic bags faster than other recently-tested methods. There are still more tests that need to be done, but if scientists can replicate whatever causes the breakdown, if could be used to alleviate the burden of non-biodegradable waste…

27 killed in bus, truck collision in Kenya

Kenyan police say 27 people have been killed in a collision between a passenger bus and a trailer truck.

Police say the accident took place along the major road linking two of Kenya’s biggest cities, capital Nairobi and the port of Mombasa.

Leornard Kimaiyo, the police chief in the Kambu area of Maukeni county, says the bus was heading to Mombasa and the trailer in the opposite direction when they collided on Tuesday.

Road accidents kill around 3,000 people in Kenya every year.

NORTH Korea: staged its largest ever firing drill to mark the 85th founding anniversary

NORTH Korea has reportedly staged what appears to be its largest ever firing drill to mark the 85th founding anniversary of its military.

According to Yonhap news agency, a government source said the country had conducted the drill around the eastern port city of Wonsan.

Leader Kim Jong-un is also believed to have participated in the event.

As the world braces for a possible North Korean nuclear test, Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged restraint in a call to President Donald Trump.

American’s US envoy has warned of a strike if Pyongyang attacks a US military base or tests an intercontinental ballistic missile.

Xi’s phone call with Trump came amid signs Pyongyang could soon conduct its sixth nuclear test explosion since 2006, or the latest in a rapid series of missile tests, further advancing its ambitions of developing a nuclear-tipped missile that could reach the US mainland.

In Washington, the Trump administration invited the entire 100-member Senate for a briefing on Wednesday on the escalating crisis.

Adding to the atmosphere of animosity, officials said North Korea has detained a third US citizen.

North Korea poses one the sternest national security challenges facing the three-month-old Trump administration.

Wrong oil put in 2 $1.5 billion warships? Investigation launched re ‘botched maintenance’

An investigation is underway to uncover whether the wrong oil was put in the engines of two new Australian $1.5 billion warships (pictured).

The warships have been forced to remain docked at Garden Island for more than a month.

Defence force officials have confessed they are in the dark about how long two of Australia’s biggest warships will be out of action as engineers work to fix the formerly pristine engines.

The Spanish-designed 27,000 tonne ships may have oil-related issues

Navy sources informed The Daily Telegraph of ‘alarming concerns’ that were disclosed about the upkeep of the HMAS Canberra and HMAS Adelaide.

Expert help has been bought in from Spain to attempt to find out what happened to the ships.

Despite being built to aid the country’s natural disasters as major responders when Cyclone Debbie hit both were not able to leave the Sydney Harbour.

It is understood Navantia are not happy the engines were put in by engineers from Siemens before the maintenance was left in the hands of engineers from BAE.
