BREAKING: Thameside college 2,000 pupils on lockdown after gun threat on Twitter

A college was placed on lockdown after a gun threat was made over social media.

Tameside College in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, received a threat of the attack on Twitter.

Around 2,000 students and staff members were evacuated at lunchtime.

An unknown social media user threatened the attack after the college posted a message welcoming students back to college today after the Easter break.

The user wrote he would attend the college ‘with my gun loaded’ and ‘rip to the kids’.

The Walking Dead S8 promotes three characters to series regular status

The Walking Dead may have just ended for another year, but production on its eighth season is about to begin – and three recurring characters have just been promoted to lead star status.

With three main characters failing to make it out of season alive (a moment of silence for Abraham, Glenn and Sasha), there were three spots to fill: these have been allocated to The Scavengers leader Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh), Negan’s right-hand man Simon (Steven Ogg) and Enid (Katelyn Nacon) will all have their roles expanded in time for the all out war storyline which commenced in the recent season finale.

Jadis was last seen betraying Rick (Andrew Lincoln) in his battle against The Saviours, while Simon – seen in season seven harassing Hilltop’s former leader Gregory (Xander Berkeley) – will most likely step into the shoes of Negan’s former ally Dwight (Austin Amelio), no working undercover for Alexandria.

Truck stuck under West Perth rail bridge

TRAFFIC is banking up in West Perth after a truck became wedged under a rail overpass.

According to police, the truck became stuck on Sutherland Street, near the Railway Terrace intersection and close to the Watertown shopping outlets, around 4.40pm on Tuesday.

The truck was removed just over an hour later.

There is a low clearance sign on both sides of the underpass, showing the height to be 3.7m.It is the second time a truck has wedged itself under a bridge in Perth, with a driver becoming stuck under the notorious Bayswater bridge last week.

24 killed in bus crash in Philippines

Disaster-response officer Mark Raymond Cano told The Associated Press that the brakes of the bus apparently failed as it negotiated a downhill road in Nueva Ecija province’s Carranglan town.

Cano says the rest of the passengers were retrieved by rescuers and taken to a hospital mostly with serious injuries.

Senior police official Robert de Guzman said bystanders saw the speeding bus fall into the ravine.

“Initial reports said there were 40 people aboard the bus,” De Guzman told a local radio station. “The injured victims have been rushed to nearby hospitals.”

Red Bulls’ Max Verstappen says sorry to Brazilian #F1 fans

The Dutchman, who won huge admiration for a stellar drive to third place at a rainswept Interlagos circuit last year, took to Instagram to clarify remarks that went down badly in Brazil.

The 19-year-old Red Bull driver had accused the Williams veteran of wrecking his best lap in qualifying at the Bahrain Grand Prix and was asked by reporters whether he would be speaking to him.

‘Well, he’s a Brazilian. So there’s not much to discuss,’ Verstappen had replied.

Being a passionate racer, I was very disappointed with my last (qualifying) stint and gave an emotional reaction that was taken out of context,’ he said.

‘By no means did I mean to insult the Brazilian people who I greatly respect and are always very nice to me when I visit the country.

‘I would like to apologise to any Brazilians that feel offended and look forward to racing in your country again,’ he added, referencing Brazilian world champions Ayrton Senna, Emerson Fittipaldi and Nelson Piquet.

Massa, the only Brazilian driver on the current starting grid, told UOL Esporte that he had spoken to Verstappen after the race and warned him to ‘be careful what you say because you’re going to have to go to Brazil to race there’.

Verstappen crashed out of Sunday’s race at the Sakhir circuit after a brake failure.

WA shark attack victim: Laeticia Brouwer …died doing something she loved.

The family of a teenager who died after being mauled by a shark off Western Australia’s south coast while surfing says they are heartbroken, but take some comfort knowing she died doing something she loved.

Laeticia Maree Brouwer was surfing with her father at Kelp Beds at Wylie Bay, just a few kilometres from Esperance, about 4:00pm local time on Monday when she was attacked.

Family spokesman Steve Evans read a statement to the media at a conference in Esperance.

Mr Evans said Laeticia’s death had left the family heartbroken.

“Laeticia will be greatly missed by her family, friends and everyone who knew her,” he said.

“We can take some comfort that Laeticia died doing something that she loved.

“The ocean was her, and her family’s passion. Surfing was something that she treasured doing with her dad and her sisters.”

Turnbull announces he’s SCRAPPING 457 visas for foreign workers

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has announced his government will scrap 457 visas for temporary foreign workers.

In a video released on Tuesday, just weeks before the Federal Budget, Mr Turnbull said:  ‘Australian workers must have priority for Australian jobs.’

The 457 visa program, introduced by John Howard’s government in 1996, allowed overseas workers to stay in Australia for up to four years.

Under the program, ‘skilled’ workers were sponsored for visas by businesses if they couldn’t find an Australian citizen or resident to do the work.

Mr Turnbull said the program would be replaced by a new visa specifically designed to attract ‘the best and brightest’ foreigners to the country.

Teen parents Jayden Lavender and Jenifer Morrison targeted by ‘firebomb’

THE teen parents who fled hospital with their newborn daughter and camped overnight in bushland say they are the victims of arson.

Fourteen-year-old Jayden Lavender, who spent 16 hours on the run with his 15-year-old fiancee Jenifer Morrison and their “bubba” Aria, said the arson attack compounded the pair’s heartbreak at the revelation that the newborn has been discharged from hospital.

Jayden said they don’t know where Aria is since the trio were found after a major police search last Thursday.
