Victoria Police officers have falsified more than 250,000 roadside breath tests in the state over a five year period, an internal investigation has revealed.
The force said it was made aware of reports that officers were placing a finger over the straw entry hole of breath testing equipment, or blowing into the straw themselves last year before an investigation was launched.
After reviewing 1,500 preliminary breath test (PBT) devices and more than 17.7 million tests conducted over five years it found more than 258,000 PBTs, or 1.5 per cent of all tests, had been falsified.
Professional Standards Command assistant commissioner Russell Barrett said the findings were disappointing.
“This conduct will not be tolerated, any member found engaging in this practice from today has been put on notice they will be investigated,” he said in a statement.

Eating salmon and sardines ‘prevents Alzheimer’s disease’
Eating plenty of salmon, mackerel and sardines prevents Alzheimer’s disease by boosting blood flow to specific areas of the brain, a study shows.
Scientists used a sophisticated scanning technique to illustrate exactly how a diet rich in omega-3 – found in oily fish – helps stave off dementia.
The healthy fat increases blood in brain regions that control memory and learning – both of which are destroyed by the devastating neurological disorder.
Fish has traditionally been described as ‘brain food’ – a claim which was dismissed for decades as an old wives’ tale.
But since the turn of the century a growing body of research has suggested it really does improve mental function…

House of Cards season 5 ep 1 review: Trump is there, like a weed growing through cracks
House of Cards s5 is out today.
*Mild spoilers for S05E01 of House of Cards*The problem for shows like House of Cards and Veep is that they can’t not acknowledge Trump. As much as they might want to just keep their heads down and explore their own stories, by virtue of them being predicated on a real world institution they can’t ignore a political shift without damaging their own authenticity. This sucks if you’re a screenwriter; who knows what Donald Trump will do in 11 days, let alone in 11 months when the season launches? Trump is an existential threat to House of Cards‘ raison d’être, a show the premise of which could be reductively be boiled down to: ‘Wouldn’t it be crazy if the president was only interested in power, not policy?’
Secrets, lies and the new cold war: how The Americans became truly topical TV
The spy thriller has gone from retro drama to the most prescient show on our screens.
When The Americans creator and producer Joe Weisberg was a CIA officer in the early 1990s, he became a virtuosic liar. “I lied to all my friends and most of the people in my family,” he told the New York Times. “I told 20 lies a day and I got used to it. It was hard for about two weeks. Then it got easy. I watched it happen to all of us.”
It was the norm; he operated with spies leading double lives. “I was working around people who lied to their kids about what they did.”
Weisberg might still be lying to family and friends today but for his decision, just before he took his first foreign assignment in 1993, to quit the CIA and look after his ailing father. “Only later did I think about what I went through and saw it was fascinating material for a television drama.”
The result is The Americans, which starts its fifth…

#F1 Ricciardo ripped off at Monaco GP AGAIN
Yet another case of what might have been for Daniel Ricciardo in Monaco. The Australian was a much happier man on the podium than 12 months ago, but the “silly” and “stupid” strategy error he blasted after qualifying may have ultimately cost him the chance to challenge for victory.
Starting fifth, Red Bull’s decision to run Ricciardo longer than teammate Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas allowed him to ‘overcut’ both drivers and secure a second successive third-place finish. But in clear air, Ricciardo was matching the lap times set by race-winner Vettel, suggesting even more may have been possible with a higher grid spot.
Ricciardo was fortunate to escape with a brush of the wall after the Safety Car restart, but was ultimately content with his work.
