Court orders new Kenyan presidential election

Kenya’s Supreme Court has declared the results of last month’s presidential election invalid, and ordered it to be re-run.

Reacting to the ruling, opposition leader Raila Odinga said members of the electoral commission had committed a monstrous crime against the people of Kenya and should be jailed.

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta said he disagreed with the ruling, but that he would respect the decision. Mr Kenyatta called for Kenyans to do the same and remain calm.

UK Wayne Rooney arrested on suspicion of drink driving

England footballing legend Wayne Rooney has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving, according to Sky sources.

The 31-year-old Everton striker was stopped by police in Cheshire on Thursday night.

A picture was posted on Instagram the same evening, showing Rooney and a fellow customer tagged at the Bubble Room bar in Alderley Edge.

Australian internet speeds slow: undersea cables damaged

AUSTRALIAN internet users have been warned to expect a serious slowdown in internet speeds until at least mid-October.

Two typhoons have damaged a number of undersea cables between Hong Kong and Sydney, ITnews reports, which will cause problems here for several weeks.

Internet service providers iiNet and Internode today issued an alert to their customers advising of the damage.

The main cable breakage that will impact Australian customers occurred an estimated 54 kilometres off the coast of Hong Kong, it said.

“We have temporarily routed via the US and redirected peering while the issue is outstanding,” the advisory from the companies said.

“Our network partner is currently engaged with submarine teams for initiation of repair process.”

ITnews said wholesale operators had “received a tentative repair completion of 13th October 2017”.

“However these dates tend to change over time due to the nature of [subsea repairs],” wholesale operators said.

The two ISPs warned rerouting internet traffic via the US would result in slower speeds as well as “latency and pack loss problems”.

“This may result in web pages taking longer to load, as well as impact to time-sensitive activities such as online gaming,” they said.

DIY powerwall made from scrap batteries. Bill came down from $1,700 to around $400

A man who created his own home energy system using thousands of discarded batteries claims he reduced his power bill by three-quarters.

A Brisbane man spent 18 months collecting and wiring together thousands of discarded batteries to create his own “homebrew” version of a Tesla Powerwall, Elon Musk’s home energy storage system, because he “was bored”.

“[I needed something] to get my ideas out of my skull and onto the bench, so to speak,” Pete Matthews told The Link.

The self-taught computer repairman now uses his backyard invention to power his family’s off-grid household appliances, excluding his hot water, air conditioning and stove, which are still connected to the grid.

He says his invention can store 40kwh, or 2.8 times the capacity of Tesla’s newest 14kwh Powerwall 2.

“My power bill came down from about $1,700 to around $400, so this is significant savings,” he said.

Mr Mathews said his system cost him $10,000 and is made from 4,480 18650-type lithium-ion batteries, a generic battery, commonly found inside laptops and other rechargeable consumer devices.

Woman who underwent botched breast surgery at Sydney beauty salon dies

A woman who went into cardiac arrest while undergoing a botched breast surgery at a Sydney beauty salon dies.

Jean Huang, 35, who managed the salon, underwent the procedure at the Medi Beauty Clinic in Chippendale on Wednesday and died at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital this afternoon.

A Chinese tourist, 33-year-old Jie Shao, administered a local anaesthetic and breast filler to Ms Huang, despite having no medical qualifications in Australia.

Shao was charged with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm and using poison to endanger life.

Inquiries are continuing with a view to further legal action being considered, NSW Police said.

Shao’s bail application was refused yesterday by magistrate Sharon Freund, who said police had a strong case against her.

Police said that Shao had a plane ticket to leave Sydney for China.

“She has made a number of admissions in relation to local anaesthetics and breast fillers,” Ms Freund said.

The magistrate rejected assurances from the tourist’s legal aid solicitor that she had qualifications from the Canton (Guangdong) Medical University.

“These are very serious charges with a maximum of 10 years in jail,” she said.

Nadal overpowers Daniel at U.S. Open

NEW YORK (Reuters) – World number one Rafa Nadal came from behind to dispatch underdog Taro Daniel of Japan 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-2 in front of a sold-out crowd at the U.S. Open on Thursday.

Despite playing a marathon five-setter the day before, 121st ranked Daniel looked the fresher of the pair at the outset of the match, breaking Nadal to take a 5-4 advantage when the Spaniard dumped a forehand into the net.

He eventually won the set and appeared poised to deliver a massive upset.

But Nadal soon found the accuracy that had eluded him in the first set and his booming serve proved too much for the exhausted 24-year-old, who is now 0-6 against top 20 opponents in his career.

Nearly 400 die in Myanmar crackdown

Nearly 400 people have died in fighting that has rocked Myanmar’s northwest for a week, new official data shows, making it probably the deadliest bout of violence to engulf the country’s Rohingya Muslim minority in decades.

Around 38,000 Rohingya have crossed into Bangladesh from Myanmar, United Nations sources said, a week after Rohingya insurgents attacked police posts and an army base in Rakhine state, prompting clashes and a military counteroffensive.

“As of August 31, 38,000 people are estimated to have crossed the border into Bangladesh,” the officials said on Friday, in their latest estimate.

The army says it is conducting clearance operations against “extremist terrorists” and security forces have been told to protect civilians. But Rohingya fleeing to Bangladesh say a campaign of arson and killings aims to force them out.

The treatment of Myanmar’s roughly 1.1 million Rohingya is the biggest challenge facing national leader Aung San Suu Kyi, accused by some Western critics of not speaking out for a minority that has long complained of persecution.

The clashes and ensuing army crackdown have killed about 370 Rohingya insurgents, but also 13 security forces, two government officials and 14 civilians, the Myanmar military said on Thursday.

The fighting is a dramatic escalation of a conflict that has simmered since October, when similar but much smaller Rohingya attacks on security posts prompted a brutal military response dogged by allegations of rights abuses.

Adrian Bayley stabbed in jail: Jill Meagher’s killer, rapist attacked in Barwon Prison

NOTORIOUS killer and rapist Adrian Bayley has been stabbed in jail.

Bayley was wounded inside Barwon Prison, west of Melbourne, on Thursday.

He suffered minor injuries.

He is in jail for the murder of Jill Meagher at Brunswick in 2012, and a series of rapes.

The loathed prisoner has been held outside the mainstream jail units because of fears he would be a target for other prisoners.

Police have been called to investigate the attack.

A Corrections Victoria spokeswoman said: “A prisoner received minor injuries following an incident at Barwon Prison on Thursday afternoon.”

“The prisoner was assessed and treated at the prison, but did not require hospitalisation or any ongoing treatment.”

Royal Perth Hospital evacuated over gas fears

AN UNKNOWN smell has forced some patients at Royal Perth Hospital to be moved within the facility, as firefighters investigate.

A hazmat incident was reported in the south block on Friday and patients on Ward 10A and Ward 11 have been relocated within the hospital.

As a precautionary measure, people in the area have been advised to remain inside with doors and windows closed.

• Motorists are also urged to avoid the area.

More bodies from the collapsed Mumbai building, taking the death toll to at least 33

Mumbai, India (CNN)Rescue teams in Mumbai Friday pulled more bodies from the rubble of a three-story building that collapsed in the south of the city, taking the death toll to 33.

Among the dead are three children; one a baby just 20 days old.

It’s believed more people could be trapped under the twisted metal, dust and debris, more than 24 hours after the building in Bhendi Bazaar crumbled after days of heavy monsoon rain.

There’s been no official link made between the widespread flooding and the building’s collapse, however the building was 117 years old and had been deemed unsafe years ago, according to officials.
