Tree crashes kill three in night of tragedy on South West roads

TWO young men were killed early Saturday morning when a car hit a tree near Lake Grace.

The males were aged, 19 and 23.

Another motorist died near Wongan Hills, also striking a tree.

Police said a motorist reported the Lake Grace accident after driving past the wreckage at 5.50am on Kulin Lake Grace Road, about 10km from the town.

Tree surgeons had to be called to remove part of the tree so rescuers could get access to the vehicle.

Major Crash investigators attended the scene.

Dowerin Police are investigating the fatal crash at Wongan Hills on Friday night.

The driver of a white Holden Commodore failed to negotiate a bend on Northam-Pithara Road and struck a tree. The man in his 20s died at the scene.

The accident happened about 12km south of Wongan Hills.

#Perth teen hit by train went to school ball 24 hours after accident

THE Perth teenager who survived being hit by a train has made a remarkable recovery even attending his school ball.

Aung Su was on his way to get a hair cut when he walked around the boom gates and across the tracks at Kenwick train station just before 4pm on Thursday.

It was as he crossed the tracks he was struck by a four-carriage train.

Miraculously, he only sustained minor injuries – a broken collar bone and some cuts to the face.

Doctors said the teen was very lucky to have survived.

“I think I was hit right there,” the 17-year-old recalls pointing to the spot where the 180-tonne train knocked him to the ground.

“Yeah I thought I’d be dead, the moment I woke up in the middle of the tracks.

Amazing footage captures tiger sharks and a giant saltwater crocodile eating huge humpback whale carcass in world first

STARTLING drone footage has captured the moment tiger sharks and a giant crocodile dine out on a huge whale carcass off the coast of Australia.

Wildlife experts at the National Geographic say it’s the first time the saltwater reptile has ever been seen feasting on any kind of whale.

A drone captured the predators eating side-by-side on the 50-foot humpback, which was spotted floating near a sandbar off Montgomery Reef, Kimberley.

It is also believed to be the first time the two species have been filmed together sharing any kind of meal.

Dr Austin Gallagher, of the campaign group Beneath the Waves, said he’s been studying sharks for more than a decade and has never seen anything quite like it.

British toddler Alfie Evans dies after serious illness which captured world’s attention

Alfie Evans, the 23-month-old British toddler whose grave illness drew international attention, died early on Saturday, his father said in a Facebook post.

Tom Evans said he was “heartbroken” by his son’s death.

Alfie had a rare, degenerative disease and had been in a semi-vegetative state for more than a year.

After a series of court cases Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, northern England, removed his life support on Monday, against his parents’ wishes.

She’s appeared nude as fearless heroine Daenerys Targaryen in Game Of Thrones.

And Emilia Clarke has now stripped off on the big screen, appearing nude in her new thriller, The Voice From The Stone.

The star, 30, will no doubt shock audiences with her racy sexy scenes as she romps with her co-star Martin Csokas.

She becomes romantically involved with his father Klaus (Csokas), but chilling surprises are afoot.

Emilia, who has received rave reviews for her performance ahead of the film’s release, can be seen topless as she romps with her on-screen love interest.

The British beauty’s star has been on the rise since she was cast in HBO fantasy series GoT, appearing in romantic drama Me Before You.

Emilia has had a busy 2017 so far as she is also set to appear in the untitled Star Wars prequel about Han Solo.

It’s set for release in 2018 and no word yet on who she will play, but she did appear in a promotional shot for the film released in February.

TEN people were rescued on Charter boat in Mullaloo rescue drama

TEN people were rescued after their 10.5m charter boat hit a reef and began taking on water off the coast near Mullaloo.

The group struck trouble about 4.15pm when the vessel hit the northern end of a reef off Little Island, about 1.5 nautical miles offshore between Mullaloo and Hillarys.

Police say another private boat in the area went to the group’s aid and took eight guests from the stricken charter on board.

They had to jump in the water and swim across to the boat with the help of a rescue swimmer from the Westpac rescue helicopter because the reef made it too dangerous to get the boat alongside.

A Whitfords volunteer sea rescue boat then collected the charter boat owner, a crew member and the helicopter rescue swimmer.

The groups were taken to shore at Hillarys jetty, where paramedics were waiting to check them.

James Blunt’s cheeky radio interview ‘You’ve ridden me then you can eat me’

He may have flown down under to perform an emotional song at the Logies.

But James Blunt’s best tour moments have come in his frequently naughty radio interviews.

Speaking to The Matt and Meshel show on KIIS FM, the 43-year-old British singer got very graphic as he described the concept behind the pizza restaurant at the top of a ski lift that was named after him.

After reading the soft-rocker’s Wikipedia account, funnyman Matt had an inkling that the You’re Beautiful singer might have ‘manipulated’ his own entry and asked him to confirm or deny them.

Surprisingly, many of the seemingly crazy facts scattered across his profile page turned out to be true.

I do have a ski lift named after me in Sweden… It’s an honour,’ he hilariously confessed.

‘I got to smash a bottle against the first pillar and say: “I name this chairlift James Blunt, God bless her and all who rides me.”‘

At first, the self-effacing singer kept it light, joking: ‘Next year I’m installing a sound system to only play my music – to keep the queues down.’

But as has been the case during his time in the country to perform at the Logies, the funnyman focused more on his racy humour than his dulcet falsetto tones.

‘There’s a restaurant at the top, and there’s a pizza there called the blunt pizza,’ he continued.

‘So you’ve ridden me, and then you can eat me.’

AFP accessed journalist’s call records in metadata breach

An Australian Federal Police officer has accessed a journalist’s phone metadata without a warrant, reigniting concerns about controversial data retention laws.

Civil liberties advocates and many MPs and senators queried the need for the laws, which came into force across all Australian telecommunications providers on April 13.

The laws force telcos to store two years of metadata including the time, date and duration of phone calls, IP addresses, and the names, addresses and billing information of internet and phone account holders.

AFP Commissioner Andrew Colvin revealed on Friday an officer investigating the leaking of ‘sensitive information’ to a journalist had accessed the journalist’s metadata without a warrant.

The Commonwealth Ombudsman is conducting an audit of the matter, but the officer has not faced any disciplinary action.

The journalist has not been informed.

Mr Colvin said by going public with the breach and acknowledging the error, the AFP was being ‘open and honest’ about it.

‘There was no ill-will or malice or bad intent by the officer involved who breached the Act…. It was a mistake that should not have happened,’ he said.

The breach, which occurred earlier this year, involved the time, date and duration of phone calls over a period of about a week, not the calls themselves, Mr Colvin said.

‘The investigator sought and was provided access to the call records of a journalist without the higher authority of a journalist information warrant,’ he said.

Once the breach was discovered, the AFP destroyed all of the material and all investigations relating to the line of inquiry were ceased.

Mr Colvin said the AFP would consider informing the journalist once the investigation was completed.

The commissioner said he was satisfied, after internal checks, that it was the first breach of its kind since the government’s metadata retention laws were put in place.

‘I believe that the public should have full confidence in the police … and this (metadata retention) policy, which was a controversial policy that was debated very widely in parliament and the public at the time,’ he said.

‘I want to underscore how important access to metadata is to police as a fundamental building block of our investigations.’

BREAKING: American Airlines from Manchester forced to turn back after declaring an emergency mid-flight

An American Airlines flight from Manchester to New York City was forced to turn back to England today after declaring an emergency mid-flight over the Irish Sea.

The flight was due to take seven hours after taking off at 10.23am, but turned around just east of Dublin and landed back at Manchester about an hour later at 11.24am.

The airline said flight AA211 returned due to a maintenance issue and that its team would ‘get everything squared away and be wheels up again as soon as possible’.

Rugby league player knocks out referee with ‘disgraceful’ punch – faces life-time ban

A French rugby league player is facing a life-time ban from the sport after punching a referee in response to being shown a yellow card, knocking him unconscious and leaving him with cheekbone and jaw injuries. The Saint-Esteve player, who has not been identified, was sent to the sin-bin during a juniors French Cup match against Toulouse by referee Benjamin Casty, brother of Catalan Dragons star Remi Casty.

The player responded by angrily confronting the referee, before launching a right hook at his face that knocked him unconscious. When opposition players asked him what he was doing, the player then started swinging punches at them, leading to a melee between the two sides.

One Toulouse player can be seen to tend to the referee, before running off to join the brawl, while one of the assistant referees soon comes to Casty’s aid.

St-Esteve president Christian Cozza confirmed that the player has already been suspended for four matches this season, and announced his resignation on social media.

“This player had already been suspended four games earlier in the season and I did not want him to play,” Cozza said.

Casty was taken to a nearby hospital where he was diagnosed with cheekbone and jaw injuries, however, reports in France claim that he avoided a broken jaw and is currently recovering from the incident.

St-Esteve are one of the feeder clubs to the Catalan Dragons, France’s best rugby league side, who play in the Super League, with Remi Casty joining the club from the Sydney Roosters in 2014.

A character first introduced in the original season of Prison Break was killed off in the reboot’s latest episode.

Both Paul Kellerman (Paul Adelstein) and T-Bag (Robert Knepper) were shot in the fourth episode titled ‘The Prisoner’s Dilemma’ – only as the latter got away with a bullet to the shoulder, while the former Secret Service villain-turned-goodie suffered a blow to the head from Poseidon’s henchman Van Gogh.

Ahead of the fatal shot, Kellerman said: “I was you once, killing for a lie.”

Speaking to EW about the character’s death, Adelstein said: “No-one knows if there’s going to be more Prison Break in general, so while it was disappointing for the character maybe to be dead, it’s a cherry on top to even get to go back and do more, so I try not to be too greedy about it.”

El Nino?: Australia could have its warmest and driest winter in years

This winter could be the warmest in years, with an Indian summer stretching on as far as July, forecasters have said.

With an El Nino brewing over the Pacific Ocean, the east and south of Australia could be in for a particularly dry and hot winter, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).

With the west of Australia also set for a balmy few months, there is a slim chance that this could be a record-breaking winter.

An El Nino could form in the east of the Pacific and forecasters say this is likely to lead to drier and warmer conditions in eastern Australia.

Senior meteorologist Paul Gregory told Daily Mail Australia this means temperatures are likely to be a few degrees higher than usual, potentially topping 17C in Sydney.

‘What happens in the eastern seaboard largely affects the east and central Australia, but it’s possible we’ll have dry conditions in western Australia too.’

While most of us will enjoy the warmer weather, El Ninos can cause issues for farmers.

‘It can be harder for the farmers,’ Mr Gregory said. ‘It can bring an abrupt end to winter and you can get a very warm spring, which is what happened in 2015 and it can affect crops.’

Despite the warmer weather, there will still be the occasional cold snap too.

Canberra and southern New South Wales are predicted to record subzero temperatures in May, June and July, although this is not unusual.

The BOM added that it was too early to know if there would be enough snow for a decent ski season, but said there would definitely be some cold nights across south east Australia.

The forecast comes back on a particularly cold spell for south east Australia caused by an Antarctic blast.

WA Public sector to be slashed by 40 per cent

MARK McGowan has unveiled a major shake-up of Government departments and confirmed large numbers of rank and file public servants face job losses in coming months and years.

In a major announcement Friday morning, the Premier said he would reduce the number of State departments from the current number of 41 to 25 by the middle of the year through amalgamations as part of efforts to drive a more “efficient” public sector.

As previously promised, Mr McGowan said new department heads would be instructed to deliver a 20 per cent reduction in the 521 members making up the top levels of the public service.

But the Premier also flagged deeper job losses across the public service.

During the election campaign Labor had promised to make $750 million in savings from the public sector, but the Premier said the deterioration in the Budget meant bigger cuts were needed.

“Over time there will be less positions across the public sector,” Mr McGowan said.

“Now that’s a tough thing to say. That’s a tough thing to do.

“We obviously have an environment out there where there are high levels of unemployment.”

He was unable to say exactly how many jobs would be lost over time, or to detail the savings that would be made in amalgamating departments.

He said the Government was running a massive deficit and was having to deal with large levels of debt.

The Premier also confirmed the Government was looking at a so-called “efficiency dividend” for the public service, meaning departments would likely have to fund other cuts to resourcing.

Mr McGowan said other cuts at the fringes were on the table, including cutting overseas trade offices such as the one WA has in London.

Mr Mc Gowan said WA had more departments per head of population than most states in Australia.

Among the changes to departments, the Department of Child Protection will be rolled into the Department of Community Serevices.

The Road Safety Commission will be pushed into WA Police and the Department of Commerce will be slotted into the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety.

The Department of Justice will now incorporate the Attorney-General’s office as well as the Department of Corrective Services.

Some departments such as the Department of Treasury will also have a change of duties, assuming responsibility for Economic Reform and the Public Utilities Office.

The Department of Premier and Cabinet will assume control of Aboriginal Affairs.

The Premier said the Government had made no decision to wider pay freezes across the public sector, but added that “saving money across government is something we need to do”.

The Premier said the Public Sector Commissioner would be contacting directors general this afternoon to advise whether they had lost their jobs.
