Heavy rains lead to water rescues in Kansas City area

Authorities have rescued more than a dozen stranded drivers after heavy rains soaked parts of Kansas City, Missouri, and its suburbs.

Flash flood warnings have been issued across the area. Local television station KCTV reports that police and fire crews plan Tuesday to go door-to-door in one area of southern Kansas City, asking residents to voluntarily evacuate.

The National Weather Service says as much as 9 inches of rain fell in one neighborhood, while a large swath around the city saw between 4 and 6 inches of rain.

In the suburb of Overland Park, Kansas, the fire department says it responded to more than 16 water assist calls as drivers found themselves stalled in high waters.

Spain attacks: Four suspects appear in court

Four men arrested in connection with last week’s terror attacks in Spain appeared in court Tuesday as it emerged that the vehicle used in one of the assaults was earlier seen in France.

The car, an Audi A3, was caught speeding on camera in Paris in the days before it mowed down pedestrians in the Spanish town of Cambril early Friday, leaving one woman dead, French Interior Minister Gérard Collomb said.

The five assailants in the car were shot dead by police at the scene.

The attack in Cambrils came just hours after a van plowed through crowds on a pedestrian street in the heart of Barcelona on Thursday, killing at 13 people and injuring more than 100 others.

Spanish police shot dead Younes Abouyaaqoub, the suspected driver of the van, on Monday after a days-long international manhunt.

On Tuesday, Collomb told CNN affiliate BFMTV that he was unsure why the car used in the Cambrils rampage had been in Paris, and said the terror cell behind the attacks was not on the radar of French authorities.

Bannon’s Breitbart spins Trump’s Afghanistan speech as ‘flip-flop’

Stephen K. Bannon is back at Breitbart and, as promised, he’s not pulling any punches.

“Trump reverses course, will send more troops to Afghanistan,” read the headline on Breitbart’s homepage following President Trump’s prime time address on U.S. military strategy in Afghanistan. “Defends flip-flop in somber speech.”

Trump’s Monday night speech — in which he further committed troops to the nation’s longest war, but offered few specifics — represented another clash between Trump and Bannon, who returned to Breitbart on Friday, the same day he was ousted as Trump’s chief strategist.

“The speech was a disappointment to many who had supported his calls during the campaign to end expensive foreign intervention and nation-building,” wrote Breitbart’s Pentagon correspondent Kristina Wong in the site’s lead article. “He acknowledged the frustration that Americans felt after 16 years of war without an end in sight.”

Bannon, who left Breitbart just a little over a year ago to join Trump’s presidential campaign, is back as its executive chairman and led an editorial meeting Friday evening. Earlier in the day, Breitbart senior editor at large Joel B. Pollak tweeted “#WAR” when news emerged that Bannon would leave the White House.

But Bannon says he won’t be going to war against the president, but on his behalf, he told Bloomberg News.

Divers Find Remains in Search of U.S. Navy Ship Damaged in Collision

Divers have found remains of missing American sailors in the flooded compartments of the Navy destroyer John S. McCain, which collided with an oil tanker on Monday off the coast of Singapore, the commander of the United States Pacific Fleet said Tuesday.

The commander, Adm. Scott H. Swift, also said that “potential remains” had been located by the Malaysian Navy, which is involved with the search effort at sea for the 10 missing sailors.

Ships and aircraft from five nations have been searching for the missing sailors near the site of the collision, in waters claimed by both Malaysia and Singapore. Each of those two countries claimed to be leading the search effort at sea, which includes ships and planes from the United States, Indonesia and Australia.

The John S. McCain was docked on Tuesday at Changi Naval Base in Singapore, with a gaping hole in its port side at the waterline.

The collision was the second in two months involving a destroyer from the Navy’s Seventh Fleet, which is based in Yokosuka, Japan.

Ischia earthquake: Last of three brothers freed from rubble

Three boys are pulled alive from rubble on the island of Ischia, after a major tremor killed two women.

Rescuers have freed the last of three brothers who were trapped under rubble after a deadly earthquake on the Italian holiday island of Ischia.

The fire service confirmed they had rescued the third child at 14:12 local time (12:12 GMT) on Tuesday.

The youngest brother, a seven-month-old baby, was rescued at around 04:00, several hours after the 4.0 magnitude tremor struck.

His eight-year-old sibling was pulled free mid-morning.

At least two women died and 39 people were injured in the quake.

It struck at 20:57 (19:57 GMT), at a depth of around 5km (3 miles), just north of the Casamicciola commune.

Ischia, off the coast of Naples, has a population of about 50,000 and is hugely popular with tourists, many of whom were out in bars and restaurants when the shaking started.

Iran says can produce highly enriched uranium in days if U.S. quits deal

Iran can resume production of highly enriched uranium within five days if the nuclear deal it struck with world powers in 2015 is revoked, Iran’s atomic chief was quoted by state media as saying on Tuesday.

The deal that Iranian President Hassan Rouhani championed with the United States, Russia, China and three European powers led to the lifting of most sanctions against Tehran in return for curbs on its nuclear program.

Rouhani has intensified efforts to protect the deal, also known by its acronym JCPOA, against Washington’s return to an aggressive Iran policy, after U.S. President Donald Trump approved new sanctions on Tehran.

Rouhani warned last week that Iran could abandon the nuclear agreement “within hours” if the United States imposes any more new sanctions.

“The president’s warning was not baseless,” Head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Ali Akbar Salehi said on Tuesday.

“If we decide, we can reach 20 percent (uranium) enrichment within five days in Fordow (underground nuclear plant),” he added.

Ferrari extend driver Kimi Raikkonen’s contract with them until the end of the 2018 season.

In a statement, the team said they had renewed their “technical and racing agreement” with the Finn, extending his stay into a fifth consecutive year.

The 37-year-old was also with Ferrari for two years from 2007-09.

He is fifth in the championship standings, with team-mate Sebastian Vettel leading Mercedes rival Lewis Hamilton by 14 points.

Gastro outbreak, Brisbane: Seven dead in aged care facility

THE death toll from a gastro outbreak at a Brisbane aged care home has risen to seven.

The outbreak first hit several weeks ago, with two residents at the Regis aged care facility in Yeronga dying.

Claims of poor hygiene and understaffing from families of residents were denied by Regis, which also denied gastro was the cause of the initial deaths.

Regis confirmed the outbreak and said controls had been in place since July 28 but said the gastro outbreak did not kill the patients.

The centre has been in lockdown for 26 days, and five more residents, including two last Friday, have died, according to Channel Nine news in Brisbane.

Regis released a statement saying it was “pleased that the gastro outbreak is nearing completion”, according to reports.

Widespread abuse, ‘bastardisation’ of recruits at HMAS Leeuwin, royal commission finds

Abuse of recruits at the former HMAS Leeuwin base was widespread and the Navy failed in its duty of care, the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has found.

The commission’s findings — contained in its report into the Australian Defence Force (ADF) — come after it heard evidence of forced sexual activity and violent assaults, which sometimes resulted in serious injuries.

It said “bastardisation” practices involving the smearing of boot polish, toothpaste or other substances on genitals or the anal area took place at the East Fremantle shore base.

The report said junior recruits who were abused did not report it from fear of retribution, being humiliated or discharged. They also feared no action would be taken.

The commissioners found senior staff members knew of and tolerated the abuse, and Leeuwin’s system of management was “ineffective in preventing and responding to child sexual abuse”.

It said the impacts of the abuse had been life-long and severe, including “serious physical injury (some of which caused long-term disability) and mental illness, suicide attempts, alcohol abuse and broken relationships”.

Multiple injuries in high-speed train incident outside Philadelphia

Multiple people are injured after an incident involving two high-speed trains outside Philadelphia early Tuesday morning, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), spokeswoman Heather Redfern tells CNN.

The accident occurred at approximately 12:15 a.m. ET at the 69th Street Terminal in Upper Darby, PA, according to Redfern. Two of SEPTA’s Norristown high-speed trains were involved. The extent and severity of the injuries is unknown at this time, and the accident is currently under investigation, Redfern says.

The Norristown High Speed Line runs between the 69th Street Terminal and Norristown.

Trump’s lavish travel costs leave Secret Service too ‘tapped out’ to pay agents

The Secret Service, already stretched thin trying to provide security for Donald Trump’s large family, has now found itself unable to pay hundreds of agents on the commander-in-chief’s protective detail, according to a report.

Secret Service Director Randolph “Tex” Alles said more than 1,000 agents have already reached the federally mandated salary caps and overtime allowances for the entire year, USA Today reports

“The president has a large family, and our responsibility is required in law,” Mr Alles ​told the newspaper​. “I can’t change that. I have no flexibility.”

He said 42 people under Trump require protection, including 18 members of his family. Only 31 people required security teams during the Obama administration.

Naked photos of Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn have been leaked online

TIGER Woods is threatening to take a celebrity gossip website to court for leaking a nude photo of him online in a recent hack of several stars, including Woods’ ex-girlfriend Lindsey Vonn.

The recovering golfer has hired a lawyer, according to a TMZ report and said he will sue if the website Celeb Jihad does not take his photo down.

The hacker reportedly broke into Vonn’s phone and gained access to her photos as well as a nude selfie Woods had sent the Olympic skier when they were dating.

A lawyer for Woods declined comment to the New York Post except to say: “It is a private hacked photo.”

Woods and Vonn were one of sport’s hottest couples during their two-year relationship, which ended in May 2015. Vonn has since called dating Woods “really hard” because of all the scrutiny they were under as a celebrity couple at the top of their sports.

The website also posted nude photos of Miley Cyrus, Kristen Stewart, Stella Maxwell and Katharine McPhee. Like Woods, McPhee has hired a lawyer and threatened to sue, TMZ reported.

An incredibly rare white koala has been born at Australia Zoo

AN incredible rare white koala has been born at Australia Zoo in Queensland, delighting visitors and veterinarians alike.

The famed wildlife park on the Sunshine Coast has been in the midst of ‘joey season’ for the past few months, with a number of new flurry arrivals finally emerging from mothers’ pouches.

But among them was something not often seen — an extremely pale youngster that added an extra element of surprise.

Dr Rosie Booth, director of the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, explained it’s not a case of albinism, where colour is absent from all physical characteristics like skin, fur and eyes.

Rather, the female joey’s white colouration is the result of a recessive gene likely inherited from her mum Tia, who has birthed other pale coloured babies in the past.

“In veterinary science it’s often referred to as the ‘silvering gene’ where animals are born with white or very pale fur and, just like baby teeth, they eventually shed their baby fur and the regular adult colouration comes through,” Dr Booth said.

Two dead, children trapped after quake hits Italian island

A magnitude-4.0 earthquake struck the Italian holiday island of Ischia, causing destruction that left two people dead at peak tourist season, authorities said, as rescue workers struggled to free two children from the rubble.

A woman was killed in Casamicciola, in the north of the small tourist island, hit by debris that fell from a church, with the body of another spotted in the rubble of a collapsed house, local media reported.

Around 4am (0200 GMT) emergency workers rescued a seven-month-old baby, crying but alive, after hours of effort. They were still struggling to free the baby’s two brothers, who were alive but trapped and communicating with emergency services through the rubble, according to Naples prefecture.

According to local media, the two children, aged 4 and 7, are trapped under a bed but are in touch with rescue workers by phone. It was their pregnant mother, healthy and safe, who raised the alarm. The father was rescued at 2:30am local time.

“In Casamicciola, a building collapsed and three people were pulled alive from the rubble — two women and a man,” the head of the local department of civil protection, Angelo Borrelli, said at a press conference early Tuesday.

Two small communes, Casamicciola and neighbouring Lacco Ameno, had borne the brunt of the quake, he added.

The tremor hit the northwest of the island at 8:57 pm (1957 GMT), with a depth of some 10 kilometres.

Italian authorities first put Monday’s quake at 3.6, but subsequently revised it upward to 4.0 magnitude.

The main earthquake was followed by 14 smaller aftershocks, Borrelli said.

Several buildings in the area collapsed and others had large, ominous cracks.
