The strongest cold weather system of the season is about to hit Australia’s southeast bringing arctic winds, icy rain and up to 40cm of snow.

A series of slow-moving cold fronts will bring thunderstorms and gale force winds to multiple states and territories including much of NSW and Victoria over the coming three days.

‘This is the strongest winter system we’ve seen so far this season,’ Weatherzone meteorologist Rob Sharpe told Nine News.

A severe weather warning was issued for Adelaide, Mount Gambier and Murray Bridge, but showers and gusty winds were also likely to spread across much of NSW, Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania on Monday through until Wednesday.

Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino said a large pool of cold air would wrap around the alps bringing freezing temperatures and ‘some of the best snow so far this season’ 20-40cm of snow.

The majority of the snow will fall on Tuesday, Mr Domensino said.
