Government to end financial support for up to 100 asylum seekers

Up to 100 asylum seekers living in the community will be served with ‘final departure bridging visas’ that will remove all financial support.

The Turnbull government has confirmed asylum seekers who have been transferred to Australia for medical treatment will be sent back to detention facilities on Nauru or Manus Island, or back to their country of origin.

Human Services Minister Alan Tudge could not confirm the precise number involved but said there wouldn’t be any further provision of taxpayer support in Australia.

“It is consistent with the principle that anybody who arrives by boat to our shores won’t be settled in Australia,” Mr Tudge told ABC television on Sunday.

“They will be settled elsewhere. That’s what this is about.”

Fairfax Media reported leaked documents show financial support could be cut to 100 asylum seekers.

It says the group will be issued on Monday with what’s called a “final departure Bridging E Visa” that cuts the $200 a fortnight that they had been receiving and gives them three weeks to find their own accommodation.

They will also have to make arrangements to quit the country.

“You will be expected to support yourself in the community until departing Australia, the Immigration Department’s letter states, Fairfax Media says.

Asylum seekers will be responsible for all their living costs like food, clothing and transport and be expected to sign the Code of Behaviour when released into the Australian community.

Controversial Trump Adviser Sebastian Gorka Reportedly Resigns – ANOTHER ONE

He has long faced questions about his ties to Nazi sympathizers and far-right Hungarian political groups.

Sebastian Gorka, a controversial adviser to President Donald Trump, is leaving the White House after months of criticism about his ties to far-right foreign political groups and his description of Islam as an inherently violent religion.

Gorka resigned his post Friday, according to The Federalist, which cited his resignation letter and multiple people familiar with the decision.

“[G]iven recent events, it is clear to me that forces that do not support the MAGA promise are ― for now ― ascendant within the White House,” Gorka wrote in a letter obtained by the outlet. “As a result, the best and most effective way I can support you, Mr. President, is from outside the People’s House.”

Gorka’s official title at the White House was deputy assistant to the president, but it was never clear what his actual duties entailed. He regularly appeared on television as a vociferous defender of Trump’s national security agenda and worldview. But he reportedly wasn’t able to get security clearance that would have allowed him to sit in on the most high-level national security meetings or read classified information.

Gorka was closely aligned with Steve Bannon, who served as Trump’s chief strategist until he left the administration in August. Like Bannon, Gorka expressed a dark view of Islam. The FBI used to employ Gorka to teach courses on terrorism, but the Daily Beast reported that the agency stopped working with him after he told students that all Muslims adhere to Sharia law and will eventually be radicalized.

Trump’s [Aust-led] council a “joke”

Trump’s disbanded Manufacturing Council, headed by Australia’s Andrew Liveris, has been described by one of its former high-powered members as a “joke”.

Richard Trumka said the council was not a vehicle to do real policy and its members – chief executives from leading US companies and other business and union leaders – never held a meeting.

Mr Trump was forced to axe the council on Wednesday after numerous members resigned in protest of the president’s controversial response to the deadly white supremacist protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, last weekend.

“First of all, the council was sort of a joke,” Mr Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO, the largest group of unions in the US, told CNN.

“It never met.

“It didn’t do anything.

“It wasn’t a vehicle to do real policy.”

In January Mr Trump anointed Darwin-born Mr Liveris, chairman and chief executive of the Michigan-headquartered Dow Chemical Company, to head the council.

The council was designed to create American jobs by bringing together “the world’s most successful and creative business leaders”.

Mr Trumka and the chief executives of Under Armour, Merck, Intel, Johnson & Johnson and 3M quit following Mr Trump’s Charlottesville remarks where he blamed “many sides” for the violence.

The exodus forced Mr Trump to disband it on Wednesday, despite defiantly writing on Twitter a day earlier “for every CEO that drops out of the Manufacturing Council, I have many to take their place”.

While some chief executives directly called out Mr Trump in their resignation statements, Mr Liveris was more benign and did not mention the president.

“Every member of the Manufacturing Jobs Initiative condemns racism and bigotry, and there cannot be moral ambiguity around the driving forces of the events in Charlottesville,” Mr Liveris wrote.

“However, in discussions I had with the White House earlier today, I indicated that in the current environment it was no longer possible to conduct productive discussions under the auspices of the Initiative.”

Johnson & Johnson chief executive Alex Gorsky’s statement took aim at the president.

“The president’s most recent statements equating those who are motivated by race-based hate with those who stand up against hatred is unacceptable and has changed our decision to participate in the White House Manufacturing Advisory Council,” Mr Gorsky wrote.

He has been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping her and threatening to auction her as a sex slave on the dark web unless a ransom of £270,000 was paid.

Ayling, who is now back at her home in Coulsdon, South London, said her abductor boasted of making more than £11m in five years from selling girls online.

Hundreds battle wild fires across southern France

Hundreds of firefighters were battling blazes across southern France on Monday, with one inferno spreading across 900 hectares of forest and threatening homes on the island of Corsica, emergency services said.

Residents were evacuated from homes at the edge of the town of Biguglia, on the island’s northeastern coast.

“The fire is very fierce and heading to urban areas of Biguglia,” lieutenant-colonel Michel Bernier, of France’s civil defence forces, told AFP.

The blaze engulfed a sawmill and burned 10 vehicles.

“We are awaiting reinforcements,” said regional deputy fire chief Jean-Jacques Peraldi, adding that around 150 people were battling the blaze aided by more than a dozen fire engines.

Local official Gerard Gavory said that three firefighting planes were also involved, and “have been surveying the area to make sure no homes are effected.”

#F1 Ricciardo gives perfectly weird interview after stunning British GP drive; CLIP EMBRACE the weirdness

Daniel Ricciardo rarely fails to put a smile on F1 fans’ faces on race weekend and he didn’t disappoint at the British Grand Prix on Sunday.

The Aussie started from 19th on the grid because of a five-place penalty for a gearbox change combined with a horror qualifying session that saw his RB13 suffer a turbo failure. But remarkably he climbed his way up to fifth by race end, one place behind teammate Max Verstappen.

Ricciardo started strongly, making up plenty of ground before he erred in swapping tarmac for gravel. His misadventure set him back but it didn’t stop him altogether as he once again cut swathes through the pack to head towards the top of the leaderboard.

He was unable to claim his sixth podium finish on the bounce but fifth was still an incredible effort considering where he started. The fun didn’t end there though as an understandably exhausted Ricciardo was a tad delusional in his post-race interview with Sky Sports’ Natalie Pinkham.

“One simply couldn’t have been higher than one was,” Ricciardo said before he addressed flying off the track at Silverstone.

“I suspect the floor would have had a bit of damage after that. It was a bit bumpy. My tush got a little bit dirty — or bruised — but I think in the end fifth was the maximum (I could finish).

Jihadists are suspected in fatal assault on Mali luxury resort; at least two people dead

BAMAKO, Mali—Suspected jihadists attacked a hotel resort Sunday in Mali’s capital, taking hostages at a spot popular with foreigners on the weekends.

At least two people were killed and about 30 people managed to escape as the assault continued into the evening, authorities said.

Gunfire first rang out at the Campement Kangaba on the outskirts of Bamako in the late afternoon. “I heard gunfire coming from the camp and I saw people running out of the site,” said Modibo Diarra, who lives nearby.

Malian soldiers later succeeded in entering the resort area, according to Commandant Modibo Traore, a spokesman for the Malian special forces in the former French colony.

“The operation is ongoing,” he said, estimating there were three or four assailants.

Mali’s security minister later issued a statement confirming at least two deaths, one of which was a dual French-Gabonese citizen. One of the suspected assailants was wounded in the attack and managed to escape, the ministry said.

As night fell, witnesses saw smoke rising from the Campement Kangaba, which features three swimming pools and is a popular escape from the Malian heat. It wasn’t immediately clear what was burning, although jihadists in other attacks have set cars ablaze.

U.S. Navy ship collided with a merchant vessel. 7 reportedly missing

Seven personnel are reportedly missing after a US destroyer collided with a Japanese fishing vessel.

Japanese broadcaster NHK says one person is injured and seven others are reportedly unaccounted for after a U.S. Navy ship collided with a merchant vessel in waters off Japan.

Footage on Saturday morning showed a person in a stretcher being taken up to a helicopter from the deck of the USS Fitzgerald.

In a statement, the Navy said the USS Fitzgerald collided with a merchant vessel 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka.

The US 7th fleet said the destroyer had ‘experienced flooding in some spaces’ but there were ‘no reports of casualties at this time’.

Earlier a US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said initial reports indicated multiple injuries aboard the destroyer…
