A magnitude-6.5 earthquake has struck China’s remote and mountainous south-western province of Sichuan, the US Geological Survey says, killing at least seven people, injuring dozens, and trapping scores of tourists in a popular scenic spot.
The quake hit a sparsely populated area 200 kilometres north-west of the city of Guangyuan at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, the USGS said.
The Sichuan earthquake administration said the epicentre of the tremor was in Ngawa prefecture, largely populated by ethnic Tibetans, many of whom are nomadic herders, but also close to the Jiuzhaigou nature reserve, a popular tourist destination.

The US military will continue to permit transgender individuals to serve openly until Pentagon chief Jim Mattis has received President Donald Trump’s “direction” to change the policy and how to implement it, America’s top military officer says.
In a memo to all military service chiefs, commanders and enlisted military leaders, General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said “there will be no modifications” to current policy for now, amid questions about Mr Trump’s announcement on Twitter that the US government will no longer “accept or allow” transgender people to serve in any capacity in the military.
“I know there are questions about yesterday’s announcement on the transgender policy by the President,” General Dunford wrote.
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) received a standing ovation from senators of both parties on his return to the Senate on Tuesday to cast the deciding vote allowing debate to proceed on Affordable Care Act repeal legislation.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) even gave him a hug.
McCain was diagnosed with a fatal form of brain cancer last week that was found during surgery to remove a blood clot above his eye. Fellow senators, many of whom have worked with him for decades, were understandably moved by his return.
McCain’s cancer was detected thanks to his taxpayer-provided health insurance. He left his sick bed ahead of treatment to clear an obstacle to a bill that, even with major changes, would deprive millions of Americans access to health insurance.
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated last week that a revised version of the Senate bill that included some concessions to moderate lawmakers would result in 22 million fewer people having health insurance than under current law.
McCain, in a speech following the vote, called for bipartisan cooperation on health care and revealed he would not vote for the GOP’s legislation in its current form.
“I will not vote for this bill as it is today,” McCain said, emphasizing every word. “It’s a shell of a bill right now ― we all know that. I have changes urged by my state’s governor that will have to be included to earn my support for final passage of any bill.

An express train running between two major Swedish cities will be named Trainy McTrainface, after the railway company opened up the name to a public vote.
MTR Express, with Swedish newspaper Metro, opened up a poll to name four new trains running between the capital Stockholm and Gothenburg on the country’s west coast.
Trainy McTrainface, which received 49 per cent of the vote, was the most popular name.
Two other trains will be called Estelle — named after the 5-year-old princess of Sweden, and Glenn — a popular name in Gothenburg. The fourth will be named by a staff member, the company said.
The unsuccessful names were Hakan, Miriam and Poseidon.
The name was inspired by Boaty McBoatface — the moniker chosen by the public to a British research vessel which was eventually shafted in favour of RRS Sir David Attenborough.
“We like this name as we think that Boaty McBoatface from UK kind of got his revenge now by his cousin Trainy McTrainface winning this poll,” a spokesperson told the ABC.
The name Boaty McBoatface was instead given to a remotely operated submarine aboard the polar research ship.
While the United Kingdom’s Natural Environment Research Council may have regretted opening their naming poll to the public, MTR Express said they would be sticking with the people’s choice.
Trainy McTrainface will be named at official celebrations in Gothenburg and Stockholm in upcoming months, along with the other trains.
The naming will be “received with joy by many, not only with Sweden”, MTR Express said.
ABC Melbourne Breakfast presenter Red Symons is in hospital after hitting his head following a fall over a week ago.
The network released a statement from the former Hey Hey Its Saturday star explaining his absence from his usual morning slot.
“Hello everybody! Just over a week ago, on Wed 5 July, when walking home from the supermarket I experienced a sudden lack of consciousness. This resulted in a fall, with my head hitting the pavement,” Symons’ statement read.
“I am currently in hospital, thankful to be receiving the best of medical attention and working on a speedy recovery.
“I’m sorry for this unexpected absence, but I’m looking forward to getting back to work as soon as possible.”
Symons had been mysteriously off-air all last week, with presenter Libbi Gorr taking over hosting duties.
Last month, Symons, 68, was forced to apologise on-air following a controversial interview with ABC podcaster Beverley Wang, where he asked her “what’s the deal with Asians?”.

According to local media, operators told police the man accidentally pulled on a hook that unstrapped his harness after confusing the ropes on his parasail.
The man fell into the water and beachgoers rushed him to shore, but he was pronounced dead in hospital.
The man’s wife reportedly filmed the accident.
Police said they had charged the boat operator with reckless driving causing death.
Another man was also being investigated.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was aware of the man’s death and was assisting the family.
It said further details, including the man’s identity, were not being released at this stage.
MOTORIST has been charged with reckless driving after allegedly ramming another car head-on three times in Northbridge on Monday night.
The driver of a Holden Cruze was travelling east on James Street, near the intersection of William Street, at 6.10pm, when he recognised the driver of a Mitsubushi Lancer that was parked facing west.
The Cruze has allegedly rammed the Lancer head-on, while the Lancer driver tried to reverse backwards, damaging three cars.
The Lancer was struck twice more before both cars stopped and the drivers got out and confronted each other.
The driver of the Cruze then allegedly threatened the driver of the Lancer with a knife before police attended the scene.
A 31-year-old man from North Perth was arrested and charged with reckless driving and being armed in a way that may cause fear.

A ransomware attack has struck computers across the globe, taking out servers at Russia’s biggest oil company, disrupting operations at Ukrainian banks and shutting down computers at multinational shipping and advertising firms.
The attack is expected to hit Australia as businesses wake up this morning.
Global law firm DLA Piper has told Australian staff it has been the victim of a “major cyber incident” overnight.
Australian staff were advised via text early this morning that all DLA Piper IT systems have been taken down to contain the situation and have been warned not to attempt to log in to their computers or turn them on.
DLA has told staff it is unlikely IT systems will be fully restored during the course of the business day in the Asia-Pacific region.
“The firm, like many other reported companies, has experienced issues with some of its systems due to suspected malware,” a DLA spokesperson said.
“We are taking steps to remedy the issue as quickly as possible.”
