Liberal Party not running candidates in Perth, Fremantle by-elections

Senator Dean Smith is outraged his party is not contesting the seats of Perth and Fremantle.THE Liberal Party will not run a candidate in up-coming by-elections in the federal seats of Perth and Fremantle, sparking outrage from party members.

WA Liberal Senator Dean Smith, who ran the party’s campaign in Perth in 2016, yesterday described the party’s decision not to run a candidate in Perth as “nonsense”.

“The 35,000 Perth electors who gave us their primary vote at the 2016 election deserve the opportunity to vote for a Liberal candidate,” Senator Smith said.

West Coast Eagles make it seven wins on the trot with 25-point triumph over GWS Giants at Spotless Stadium

Willie Rioli and Jamie Cripps celebrate a goal for the Eagles. The red-hot West Coast Eagles have remained unbeaten on their travels with a 25-point win over Greater Western Sydney on Saturday.

The Eagles kicked five straight goals in the second quarter to take control of a game they won 12.14 (86) to 8.13 (61).

It was a seventh straight victory for West Coast, who moved to the top of the table above Richmond, who they host next week, and improved their record to 7-1 and 3-0 outside Western Australia.

Missing Nic Naitanui, Luke Shuey and Jeremy McGovern, the Eagles underlined their depth with a strong performance against a Giants side that lost Phil Davis and Matt de Boer during the game.

The Eagles had the most potent forward at Spotless Stadium in Jack Darling, who kicked four goals, all in the first half.

Autumn temperatures set new record as Perth soars above 32C

People sit on Floreat Beach, enjoying the weather. If you thought the 32-degree day in Perth felt a little odd for this time of year, you would be right.

The city recorded a maximum of 32.7 degrees Celsius at 1:04pm — making it the latest 30-degree or above day in autumn on record.

The previous record for Perth was set on May 9, 1962, when the city recorded exactly 30C.

The temperature is well above the May average maximum of 22.3C.

The unseasonable warmth, which is set to continue into next week, is due to a high pressure system in the bight and a trough of low pressure off the west coast pushing warm air from the north towards Perth.

Perth man strangled in Bali villa: police

A Perth man whose bloodied body was found in a Bali villa is now believed to have been strangled to death by someone close to him, police say.

Stephen Richardson, 63, was found lying naked on his bed in his rented villa at the popular beachside town of Sanur by his friend on Monday afternoon.

Initially police believed he may have died as a result of an accident while intoxicated, but Head of Denpasar District Police Colonel Hadi Purnomo said the autopsy revealed the cause of death to be strangulation.

“There has been an assault that has caused the victim’s death,” he told AAP on Friday.

“There’s also stabbing, blunt object (trauma) too.

“(But) the main (cause of death) is strangulation, which caused the victim to run out of breath and die.”

Mr Richardson’s partner Karen East arrived in Bali on Wednesday and gave permission for the autopsy to be carried out.

Police say they are continuing an investigation into his death but have so far been unable to find CCTV that may lead to a suspect.

They believe the killing was carried out by a single perpetrator.

“The questioning of witnesses also hasn’t led to suspect,” Col Purnomo said.

However, they do believe Mr Richardson died at the hands of someone who was close to him.

“If they didn’t know the victim, he or she couldn’t get into the house.”

There has also been no sign of robbery, with Mr Richardson’s passport, phone, money and jewellery left untouched at the villa.

Mr Richardson is believed to have moved to Bali around three months ago and was living alone at the villa.

Friends had seen him on Saturday night drinking at a local bar.

Fearing for his safety, friend Garry Crocker scaled his fence on Monday afternoon after being unable to contact him for a number of days.

He saw his lifeless body lying in the villa and noticed blood spatters around the property.

Hamilton quickest in #F1 Spanish practice. Alonso failed to complete a lap, breaking down after just three corners

Lewis Hamilton enjoyed an impressive start to the Spanish Grand Prix weekend, finishing fastest in the opening practice on Friday morning.

The Brit helped secure a Mercedes one-two in Barcelona as he clocked a 1:21.521 lap on medium tyres, just 0.029 seconds ahead of his team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen came closest to the Mercedes pair, while Fernando Alonso endured a miserable day, breaking down after just three corners.

Just when McLaren looked as though they had nowhere to go but up, they sunk to a new low as Alonso failed to complete a lap.

A puff of smoke enveloped the two-time former champion when his McLaren spun out of a turn and into the gravel at the start of the morning session at the Circuit Barcelona-Catalunya.

McLaren’s team radio told him to ‘stop the car, stop the car, engine problem’ as a pool of liquid dripped from the underside of the vehicle.

The rest of the opening practice saw Mercedes register the top two times under sunny skies in northeastern Spain following Thursday’s showers.

Ferrari pair Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel were third and fourth, about a second slower than Hamilton.

F1 leader Vettel also had a mishap early on, when what he suspected to be an issue with his gearbox forced him to stop coming out of pit lane. After marshals rolled him back to his garage, his mechanics quickly fixed the problem and he went back out.

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, who won the race last year, and Daniel Ricciardo were next, within 1.6 seconds of Hamilton.

Practice will resume after lunch and again on Saturday before qualifying for Sunday’s race.

Perth boy found mentally unfit to stand  trial of raping an eight-year-old

An 11-year-old-boy accused of raping and threatening to kill an eight-year-old boy with a knife has had charges against dropped after being found mentally unfit to stand trial.

The boy originally pleaded guilty to the charges after he allegedly raped the eight-year-old at a suburban Perth park in December.

The Department of Public Prosecutions said in Perth Children’s Court on Friday that it had decided not to continue with the case after taking into account a psychiatric report that was ordered by magistrate Andree-Marie Horrigan.

The report confirmed Ms Horrigan’s concerns about the boy’s capacity to understand what he had admitted to and proceedings against him and therefore, his fitness to plead and stand trial based on section 29 of the Criminal Code.

‘People that fall into this category should not be criminalised notwithstanding how serious the matter is and the matter should be discontinued,’ Ms Horrigan told the court.

Section 29 states a person under 14-years-old is not criminally responsible for a crime unless it can be proven he knew what he was doing is wrong.

The boy was in court with a middle-aged adult male relative.

A woman who works for the Department of Child Protection told the court it was working with the boy and his family, and requested a copy of the court-ordered psychiatric report.

The case shocked Perth residents when it was first revealed in February that the small schoolboy had been charged with sexually penetrating a child but had then been allowed to return to his suburban school and interact with other children.

This prompted an outcry from parents and he was removed from the school.

Scorpion forces evacuation of United Airlines flight. UNBELIEVABLE

Now United Airlines passengers are being attacked by SCORPIONS!

A United Airlines flight was delayed for several hours in Texas after reports of a scorpion crawling out from a passenger’s clothes.

Passengers say United Flight 1035 was evacuated on Thursday at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston following the scorpion sighting.

The flight, which was headed for Quito, Ecuador was delayed for three hours.

News of the scorpion incident got out when passengers started tweeting about the ordeal.

‘The captain of my flight just told us it’s a scorpion on the plane???!!!!! Good job United!’ Daniel Dueñas tweeted.

Another passenger claimed on Twitter that ‘flight 1035 from Houston to Ecuador evacuated due to a scorpion stinging a passenger’.

United, however, have said no one was stung by the scorpion.

‘Houston to Quito flight 1035 returned to the gate after a scorpion reportedly emerged from a customer’s clothing,’ the airline said in a statement.

Paramedics at the gate immediately examined the customer and determined that he had not been stung. The customer declined further medical treatment and, as a precaution, a new aircraft was arranged.

‘We provided all passengers with a meal voucher due to the delay and the flight, with the customer aboard, has departed for Quito.’

It comes a month after a passenger on another flight out of Houston was stung by a scorpion when it fell on the man’s head from an overhead bin.

The passenger, Richard Bell, was stung when he picked the creature up after it landed on his plate.

Another passenger then stomped on the scorpion before it was thrown in a toilet.
