Barcelona Latest: Julian Cadman, Australian-British boy, 7, among dead confirmed

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) —

Spanish authorities say they have positively identified three more victims of the van attack in Barcelona, including a 7-year-old boy who has been missing since the rampage Thursday.

National and regional emergency services said Sunday that a boy with dual Australian-British nationality was one of the 13 people killed when a van swerved a pedestrian walkway in Barcelona’s Las Ramblas district.

Nacho Solano, spokesman for the Catalan government’s emergency services, confirms that the child was Julian Cadman, an Australian with dual British nationality.

The Australian, Philippines and British governments announced Friday that the 7-year-old son of a woman seriously injured in the attack had become separated from her and was missing.

The other two victims identified were said to be Belgian and Italian. Solano says he could not name them.

Turnbull announces new anti-terror strategy

The Prime Minister has unveiled the country’s first national strategy to prevent attacks on home soil.

The plan, called Australia’s Strategy For Protecting Crowded Places From Terrorism, was given to Australian businesses and councils last week, and outlines ways to prevent vehicle attacks similar to those seen in Barcelona, Nice, and London.

‘What we’ve done with this crowded places strategy is we have set out a series of tools by which owners and operators of venues… are able to assess the vulnerability of their site, see how they can make it safer and know where to seek advice from police,’ Mr Turnbull said.

‘We are relentlessly, tirelessly, working to keep Australians safe.

‘There is no place for set and forget. ‘

‘Every day we are improving the tools whether they are legislative or technical, that our agencies have to keep us safe.’

NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller says that the new guidelines will provide consistency to risk assessment of various events.

‘I think in the past, law enforcement and government has asked the community and the media to play an important part in the prevention of terrorism but what we’re doing now is tying in local businesses and local government to all be on the same page,’ he said.

Transport Minister Darren Chester said aside from maintaining constant vigilance there will be a greater use of permanent bollards to separate vehicles from pedestrians and more use of police and agencies around mass gatherings.

Stephen Bannon: ‘No administration in history has been so divided’

The White House is indeed divided.

That’s the claim being made by Stephen Bannon in a new interview, following his departure Friday from the White House as President Trump‘s chief strategist. Bannon, 63, is returning to Breitbart News as executive chairman.

“No administration in history has been so divided among itself about the direction about where it should go,” Bannon told The Washington Post Saturday, adding that the president’s base is frustrated by a congressional agenda that meshes with traditional Republican priorities more so than the agenda Trump campaigned on during the election.

Bannon says both Republicans and Democrats need to focus on issues concerning the working class.

Bannon said GOP leadership must embrace Trump’s plans for taxes, trade and a U.S.-Mexico border wall, or it will alienate the president’s base.

“If the Republican Party on Capitol Hill gets behind the president on his plans and not theirs, it will all be sweetness and light, be one big happy family,” Bannon said.

But don’t count on that “sweetness” happening anytime soon, Bannon cautions.

Bannon told The Washington Post that the feuding going on in the White House and in the Republican leadership ranks don’t completely mirror the country’s divisions.

“The tensions in the White House are slightly different than the tensions in the country. It’s still a divided country,” Bannon said. “Fifty percent of the people did not support President Trump. Most of those people do not support his policies in any way, shape or form.”

Some 120 gas canisters found for ‘one or more’ attacks in Barcelona: police

Police said Sunday they have found more than 120 gas canisters in a house in Alcanar, where suspects of this week’s twin assaults in Spain were believed to be building bombs for ‘one or more’ attacks in Barcelona.

“We’re starting to see clearly that (the Alcanar house) was the place where they were preparing explosives for one or more attacks in the city of Barcelona,” police chief of Catalonia region Josep Lluis Trapero told journalists.

On the eve of the attack in Barcelona, an explosion had occurred at the house about 200 kilometres south of the city, and police believe it was detonated in error by the suspected jihadists.

Grief-stricken Barcelona paid homage Sunday to victims of two terror assaults at a mass in the city’s Sagrada Familia church, as investigators turned their focus to a missing Moroccan imam believed to have radicalised the young attackers.

King Felipe, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and Catalonia’s president Carles Puigdemont led the ceremony mourning the 14 people killed by jihadists who used vehicles to mow down pedestrians in Barcelona’s Las Ramblas boulevard on Thursday and in the nearby seaside resort of Cambrils early Friday.

“These have been days of tears, many tears,” said auxiliary bishop Sebastia Taltavull.

Outside the church, snipers were posted on rooftops surrounding the landmark building by Gaudi, while heavily armed police stood guard as hundreds of people gathered under grey skies.

Watch the 2017 Solar Eclipse Online August 21 [USA  12:05pm EST / 5:05 pm GMT] Australia 21st + 22nd

For the first time in a long time, those of us in the U.S. will have the opportunity to experience a total solar eclipse on

The solar eclipse first makes landfall in Lincoln Beach, Oregon at 9:05 am PT on Monday (12:05pm EST / 5:05 pm GMT / 2:05 am AEST on Tuesday).

NASA TV

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will of course play a prominent role in the total eclipse streaming on Aug. 21. The company has confirmed that programming for the eclipse will begin at 12 p.m. ET and the “main show,” which will cover the total eclipse, kicks off at 1 p.m.

You’ll be able to watch NASA’s live stream on its official apps for iOS, Android, and Amazon Fire/Fire TV, as well as on the NASA app for Apple TV. If you’re on social, you can watch the stream on Facebook Live, Twitter/Persicope, Twitch, Ustream, and YouTube.

NASA will also stream the event on its website.

Eclipse Ballooning Project

The Eclipse Ballooning Project is a cohort of students at high schools and universities, as well as NASA scientists, that has commissioned balloons to fly at high altitudes and monitor the eclipse.

According to the project’s page, students will deploy balloons at 25 locations and will stream live the views from those balloons. If you want to watch that stream, you can see it here.

NASA EDGE

NASA EDGE is an offshoot of NASA’s traditional programming. It takes a bit of a harder look at science and advancement and appears to be unscripted and more focused on the “edgier” side of NASA’s operation. NASA EDGE will also stream the eclipse live, and will do so on its Ustream page. Look for some insight from NASA scientists, as well.

Slooh

Slooh is one of the more interesting sites in this roundup, giving you access to telescopes around the world so you can track asteroids and planets and generally peer into space, all from the comfort of your home.

Slooh has deals in place to deliver online access to telescopes around the world, and one of them is in Stanley, Idaho — a telescope that just so happens to be in an ideal spot to view the total eclipse.

On Aug. 21, Slooh will stream live the total eclipse from Stanley, Idaho, giving you a great look at the event.

The Exploratorium

The Museum of Science, Art and Human Perception’s Exploratorium is also getting into the total eclipse fun. The organization has a free app, called the Total Solar Eclipse, that will let you access live video streams of the eclipse across the U.S. The views will come from telescopes in Oregon and Wyoming and include color commentary from Exploratorium educators and NASA scientists.

The app is available now as a free download to Android and iOS devices.

The Science Channel

The Science Channel won’t be left behind during the big show. The network says that it will stream live the eclipse from its Facebook page. Its view of the eclipse will come from the Lowell Observatory in Madras, Oregon. Its stream will include insight from astronomers and educators on what you’ll be experiencing while you watch.

CNN

CNN has a page on its website dedicated to the total solar eclipse. On the page, you can see where the best areas would be to view the eclipse, and you can also read about it and its significance. There’s also a countdown to when it starts, so you can stay abreast of the best views.

When it’s time for the eclipse, you can head back to the CNN page and watch the show live from your browser. Better yet, CNN’s view has a virtual reality effect to make it feel like you’re really there.

Fortunately, thanks to a host of streaming services, you’ll be able to watch the full and total solar eclipse live as it happens. Here are the best places to watch the eclipse as it’s meant to be viewed.

AFL: Freo embarrassed by red-hot Tigers

Nick Kyrgios beats David Ferrer to reach Cincinnati Masters final, fresh after Rafael Nadal scalp

Nick Kyrgios is into the final of the Cincinnati Masters after taking down another Spaniard, this time in the form of David Ferrer.

Kyrgios had a much tougher time of it compared to Saturday’s dismantling of Rafael Nadal, winning 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4) in a tight contest in which neither player lost a game on serve.

Still, the Australian world number 23 had to work hard on service, as Ferrer fought to cover plenty of court despite his advancing years.

Basic mistakes also didn’t help — with Kyrgios looking to wrap the second set quickly, he fluffed his lines by paddling a simple volley into the net with Ferrer at his mercy.

But in typical fashion, Kyrgios did seal the game with an effortless winner down the line with Ferrer stranded again, to lead 5-4 and hunting a break.

Evacuations orders issued for US wildfires

Evacuation orders have been issued in California and Oregon as wildfires neared small towns.

About 600 residents were told to leave the tourist town of Sisters, Oregon, and authorities said Saturday another 1000 people had been told to be ready to leave if necessary.

Sisters is located on the edge of a 110km swathe of the state where the moon will completely blot out the sun.

No structures had been lost and no injuries have been reported since the fire began last week. The cause is under investigation.

Crews were expecting a tough day pm Saturday with winds gusting to more than 30km/h.

On Monday, they will have to contend with the solar eclipse that fire officials say will ground all firefighting helicopters and most fixed-wing aircraft for about 35 minutes as the moon’s shadow passes over the area.

Shopkeepers were hoping the fire would not inhibit business as tourists arrive to watch the eclipse.

In California, authorities issued an evacuation order for the small town of Wawona as a week-old fire in Yosemite National Park grew and air quality reached a hazardous level.

The US Forest Service said the fire grew to more than 10.36sq/km overnight due to winds from thunderstorms. Authorities ordered people to leave as air quality was expected to worsen…

Cycling Australia: Anna Meares coach Gary West dies aged 57

SYDNEY (Reuters) – Gary West, the coach who guided Anna Meares to gold at the 2012 London Olympics, has died at the age of 57, Cycling Australia said on Sunday.

West stood down as Australia’s head track sprint coach last year after eight years in the role when he was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease (MND).

“Gary was a man of utmost integrity,” Cycling Australia CEO Nick Green said in a statement.

“His accolades both on and off the bike as a cyclist and coach are well documented: he was a leader, he was humble and a visionary in all aspects of life and sport.

“Beyond the track, he was a loving husband and father, and friend to so many involved in our sport.”

West competed in the points race at the 1984 Olympics and won gold in the 4,000m team pursuit at the 1982 Commonwealth games but it was as a coach that he enjoyed his greatest success.

He took over as coach of Meares after she won a sprint silver at the 2008 Olympics and four years later in London was at her side when she gained revenge over British rival Victoria Pendleton to take the gold.

Four killed in South Korean shipyard blast

At least four people have been killed in South Korea in an explosion ...An explosion at a shipyard in South Korea has killed four workers.

South Korea’s fire department did not give the cause of Sunday’s blast. Korean media reports said a tank exploded in a ship under construction.

The four men, aged in their 30s to 50s, were painting the ship in the yard in Jinhae, an industrial hub on the country’s southeast coast, an official from the National Fire Agency said.

“No additional injuries were reported,” the official said.

The ship is intended to carry about 74,000 tonnes of oil, and to be delivered to a Greek buyer in October.

Ivanka Trump: ‘beautiful to see’ anti-racism march in Boston. Pres Trump: “many anti-police agitators in Boston”

Trump’s daughter Ivanka, who is Jewish, tweeted Saturday night: “It was beautiful to see thousands of people across the USA come together today to peacefully denounce bigotry, racism & anti-Semitism. We must continue to come together, united as Americans!”

Thousands of anti-racism demonstrators flooded the streets of Boston Saturday, dwarfing a gathering of white nationalists in the city and triggering scuffles with police but avoiding the serious violence that marred a similar event a week earlier in Virginia.

While Boston saw no repeat of the violence that erupted last weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia, isolated scuffles between police and protesters prompted President Donald Trump to weigh in, with a tweet intoning against the “many anti-police agitators in Boston.”

But as protesters began departing central Boston without major incident later Saturday, he followed up with a more positive tone.

“I want to applaud the many protestors in Boston who are speaking out against bigotry and hate,” he tweeted.

“Our country will soon come together as one!”

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans told a press conference that while there were people “who came here to cause problems,” authorities were able to maintain order and keep the two sides apart. He credited a unit specially trained for crowd control.

“I thought they did a good job of moving that crowd,” Evans said. “Sometimes it doesn’t look pretty, but that’s what they’re trained for.”

FATHER and daughter kicked off flight for talking: CLIP;

A FATHER and daughter were kicked off a Frontier Airlines flight in Orlando after allegedly privately expressing their displeasure with the airline.

Eric and Whitney Miller had just boarded the flight to St Louis after a six-hour delay when they were asked to leave because the crew “felt threatened” by their behaviour, Fox News reported.

In a Facebook post, which has since been removed, Whitney wrote that the pair were removed after 15 minutes of sitting in their seats and were “humiliated” for getting kicked off the plane.

The incident was caught on video by another passenger a few rows back. While it doesn’t show the initial conversation between Whitney and her father, it shows their interaction with flight crew as they’re being told they have to leave the plane.

After asking the Millers to leave their seats, a crew member mentions getting the police involved, prompting Eric to say: “You are going to call the police?”

Then, Whitney can be heard asking: “What did we do wrong? Why are we getting kicked off the plane?”

Eric then says: “This is the most loathsome experience I can actually say I’ve indulged in 70 years of flying on an aeroplane. This is absolutely incredible.

“We have a conversation, you’re threatened and we are going to have to leave after spending 12 hours in this airport waiting for this plane to leave. Absolutely shameful.”

Whitney’s post said she and her father were privately discussing the “awful travel experience and customer service” of the airline, which prompted them to be removed from the flight.

The passenger who filmed the video, Jocelyn Praia Gonzalez, said on Facebook the Millers “did not deserve this at all”.

“You hear his reaction? Still classy after all the attacks Frontier gave them both. Never again!” she said.

#Perth girl Holly Young was trackside at Usain Bolt’s final race

RETIRED sprinter Usain Bolt and Perth model Holly Young are continuing their romance.

Ms Young, 23, was spotted trackside at Bolt’s final race of his career at the IAAF World Championships in London last week.

It comes less than five months after the pair enjoyed a romantic four-day trip to Germany, which Young documented with loved up photos on social media.

Bolt hosted a live chat for Young’s 24,000 Instagram followers, at the time, showing off his dance moves and signature pose.

They will have more time to spend together now that Bolt has retired from sprinting.

The pair met at Crown Melbourne earlier this year, before Bolt flew Ms Young to Germany so they could spend time together.

Ms Young, 23, works as a sales executive for her family company Sportsbettingmax.com.

Bolt is the highest-paid athlete in the history of the sport, earning $42 million in one year.

Two whales frolic for the crowd at #Perth’s North Beach

A STAND-UP paddleboarder has had a close encounter with a pair of curious southern right whales just 200m off the coast near North Beach.

Photographer Stewart Allen, 53, of Ocean Reef, captured the moment on Friday afternoon as dozens of people stood along the cliffs between North Beach and Waterman to watch the whales frolic for more than two hours.

“The pair of whales I saw, which seemed to be a mother and calf, were in no rush and were lolling around and doing lots of fin-slapping,” Allen, who used a drone to photograph the whales, said.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions said several southern right whales had been spotted along the metropolitan coast this week as they headed home to southern waters.

“They’ve been feeding in warmer waters off Geraldton and now they’re heading home,” she said.

“It is a bit late in the season for them to be here (off Perth) but it’s not uncommon.”

She said many of the female whales would be pregnant but were still offering comfort to their calves from last season.

She warned people to stay away from the whales and not approach them as the threatened species had special protection under the Wildlife Conservation Act.

She said the whales species had a reputation for being temperamental.

Dick Gregory, cutting-edge satirist and uncompromising activist, dies at 84

The comedian Dick Gregory rose to national prominence in the early 1960s as a black satirist whose audacious style of humor was biting, subversive and topical, mostly centered on current events, politics and above all, racial tensions. His trademark was the searing punchline.

“A Southern liberal?” he once said. “That’s a guy that’ll lynch you from a low tree.” Another: “When I get drunk, I think I’m Polish. One night I got so drunk I moved out of my own neighborhood.” On segregation: “I know the South very well. I spent 20 years there one night.”

Mr. Gregory, 84, died Aug. 19 in Washington. His son, Christian Gregory, announced the death on Mr. Gregory’s official social media accounts. The cause was not reported.

His expert timing and bold humor — often pulled from the day’s headlines — inspired the careers of comedians such as Bill Cosby and Richard Pryor.

Mel Watkins, a journalist and scholar whose books include “On the Real Side: A History of African American Comedy,” said that Mr. Gregory broke the mold among black comedians by employing political satire at a time when audiences expected black performers to do minstrel skits in baggy pants and outsize shoes and use slapstick humor.

“He was the comic that made white America aware of the fact that African American comedians were perfectly capable of satire,” Watkins said. “He was sharp. He was urbane. He smoked a cigarette on stage. He was very calm in demeanor but very outspoken in what he said. … He brought in current political and social issues into his comedy — which was astounding to most white Americans at that time. It was during a time when blacks were considered incapable of doing this.”

Mr. Gregory was hired at the country’s most prominent clubs — from the Blue Angel in New York to the hungry i in San Francisco. He was a guest on “The Tonight Show” with Jack Paar and “The Merv Griffin Show.” He made more than $12,000 a week at his peak.

Darryl Littleton, a comedian and author of “Black Comedians on Black Comedy,” said that Mr. Gregory was among the first black comics to gain recognition for incorporating political barbs into his routine.

Littleton said Mr. Gregory, along with white comics Lenny Bruce and Mort Sahl, “were all chopping at the same tree and nobody was really doing social commentary and breaking down barriers like those guys. What a lot of guys do now echoes what those three guys did back then.”
