Chinese Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo dies
BEIJING (Reuters) – Chinese Nobel Peace laureate Liu Xiaobo has died, the government of the northeastern Chinese city of Shenyang, where he was being treated for late-stage liver cancer, said on Thursday.
The Shenyang legal bureau said in a brief statement on its website that Liu had suffered multiple organ failure and efforts to save him had failed.
Liu, 61, was jailed for 11 years in 2009 for “inciting subversion of state power” after he helped write a petition known as “Charter 08” calling for sweeping political reforms.
He was recently moved from jail to a hospital in Shenyang.

Mr Hussey died at the same Phuket beach where 20-year-old Aussie Emily Collie died in a horror jetski crash with her boyfriend in February.
The parasail operators have been interviewed by police and charged with recklessness causing death.

The video shows Mr Trump attending a June 15, 2013 dinner with his future business partners, the Azerbaijani-Russian family, and their publicist, Rob Goldstone.
Mr Goldstone is currently caught up in the controversy surrounding Mr Trump’s eldest son and alleged Russian collusion in the election.
Donald Trump Jr released an email chain yesterday in which he said he would “love” to receive damaging information about his father’s Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, from Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya.
The video was shot in Las Vegas on the eve of the Miss US pageant, and documents a series of clips from that day, including more than three minutes of interactions between Mr Trump, the Agalarovs and Mr Goldstone.
Mr Trump signed a deal with the Agalarovs to bring Miss Universe to Moscow in 2013.
It comes just a day after the US President’s eldest son used a Fox News interview to defend his meeting with the Kremlin-linked lawyer.
“In retrospect, I probably would have done things a little differently,” he told Trump supporter and presenter Sean Hannity.

THIS is the horrifying moment an Australian pensioner falls to his death in front of shocked sunbathers while parasailing.
Roger John Hussey, 70, had gone up on the water sports attraction on Kata Beach in Phuket, Thailand, this afternoon at around 2pm local time.
But within moments he plunged more than 100ft into the shallow water below as dozens of people watched on in horror.
Emergency services rushed John to the Patong Hospital but he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Lt Col Suwisit Keereerak, deputy chief inspector of Karon Police Station, said officers had now launched a probe into the accident.
The boat operator and the staff member on the parasail were arrested and charged with recklessness leading to death.
They were named as the parasilor Rungroj Rakscheep, 38, and Montien Chandeng, 45, the boat captain.
They reportedly told police that Mr Hussey accidentally pulled on a hook which unstrapped his harness. This caused him to fall to the sea below.

The 57-year-old tourist was blown away in Sint Maarten and seriously injured, dying a short time later, report a handful of media outlets.
Several people were apparently holding on to the airport fence by the Princess Juliana International Airport.
The director of tourism for the island of St Maarten, Rolando Brison, told the NZ Herald he had spoken to the family of the woman.
“Yes, the family did confirm that [she was a New Zealander] to me,” he said. “And we’re so sad to hear that.”
Brison passed on his condolences to the family for their loss when he met with them shortly after the accident occurred.
“I met with the family of the deceased this evening and while they recognised that what they did was wrong, through the clearly visible danger signs, they regret that risk they took turned out in the worst possible way.
“At this time I only wish to express my deepest sympathy to the family and loved ones while we continue to investigate what transpired just hours ago.”
