United Airlines’ shares seen sliding, $1bn off the group’s total market value? After passenger was dragged from overbooked flight

The slump could wipe as much as $1bn off the group’s total market value

Shares in United Continental Holdings are expected to fall around 5 per cent on Tuesday, based on futures trading contacts, as the company continues to draw fierce criticism for violently removing a passenger from an overbooked United Airlines flight so staff could take his seat. Footage of the incident was shared on social media and prompted outrage globally.

The man who was removed from the flight said that he was a doctor and needed to get home to treat patients the next day.

He was filmed with blood flowing down his chin afterwards, saying: “I want to go home, I want to go home.”

Explosion hits police compound in southeastern Turkish city of Diyarbakir

An explosion in a police compound in Turkey’s southeastern city of Diyarbakir wounded several people and sent a large plume of grey smoke rising over surrounding buildings on Tuesday, but the cause of the blast was not immediately clear.

A police source said the explosion appeared to have taken place in a vehicle repair section of the police compound, causing part of the roof to collapse and wounding at least four people. The Dogan news agency said one was in a critical condition.

The blast comes ahead of a hotly contested referendum on Sunday on broadening President Tayyip Erdogan’s powers, a constitutional change opposed by many in the country’s predominantly Kurdish southeast.

The explosion was in the central, largely residential district of Baglar, where a car bombing by suspected Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants wounded scores of people last November.

Diyarbakir is the largest city in Turkey’s southeast, where the PKK has fought an insurgency against the state for more than three decades to press demands for Kurdish autonomy. Violence has flared since a ceasefire collapsed in July 2015.

Toshiba warns its survival is at risk as financial losses mount

Toshiba has warned its very survival is at risk while releasing twice-delayed financial results showing huge losses that its auditors were unable to approve.

The crisis-hit firm said: “There are events and circumstances that may bring about significant questions about the idea of (carrying on) as a going concern,” in a Japanese language statement accompanying the unaudited figures.

They showed a loss of 532.5bn yen (£3.9bn) in the nine months to December 2016 and suggested annual losses to the end of March were on track to come in at 1.1tn yen (£8bn).

The company, a colossus of corporate Japan with 188,000 employees globally, had been threatened with expulsion from the Tokyo Stock Exchange unless it met the extended deadline of Tuesday to file its accounts.

How the world reacted to United Airlines throwing a passenger off their plane

united-comp.jpgA man was seemingly left with a bloodied face after being forced off an overbooked United Airlines flight he’d paid for.  The airline first asked passengers if they wanted to volunteer to leave the plane, because they had overbooked. But when not enough passengers did, a member of staff announced a computer would randomly pick someone.   And when the man who was chosen refused, he was dragged off the plane by security and an air marshal…

Passenger dragged off flight to make room for STAFF of United Airlines!

United Airlines insists they followed the right procedures after video of a passenger being forcibly removed from an overbooked flight sparks outrage.

As the flight waited to depart from Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, police officers could be seen grabbing the screaming man from a window seat, pulling him across the armrest and dragging him down the aisle by his arms.

The airline was trying to make room for four of its employees on the Sunday evening flight to Louisville, Kentucky.

Passenger Audra D Bridges posted the video on Facebook. Her husband, Tyler Bridges, said United offered $US400 and then $US800 in vouchers and a hotel stay for volunteers to give up their seats.

When no-one volunteered, a United manager came on the plane and announced passengers would be chosen at random.

“We almost felt like we were being taken hostage,” Mr Bridges said.

“We were stuck there. You can’t do anything as a traveller. You’re relying on the airline.”

When airline employees named four customers who had to leave the plane, three of them did so. The fourth person refused to move, and police were called, United spokesman Charlie Hobart said.

Journalist who exposed Donald Trump charitable claims wins Pulitzer and revealed ‘grab ’em by the pussy’ tape

david-fahrenthold.jpgThe Washington Post’s David Fahrenthold has won a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting, which included the revelation that Donald Trump had made false claims about his charitable fundraising as well as breaking the news of the tape in which the tycoon bragged about groping women.

During the US election campaign last year, the reporter investigated the President’s philanthropic works over his business career, revealing that Mr Trump had made his fundraising seem more impressive than it actually was.

Following Mr Fahrenthold’s reporting, the New York Attorney General opened an inquiry into the Trump Foundation fundraising practices, and ultimately issued a “notice of violation” ordering the foundation to stop raising money in New York.

The Pulitzers, given out by Columbia University, are the most prestigious prizes in American journalism for newspaper and digital news coverage.

AirAsia pilot convicted of Perth rape

A MALAYSIAN  airline pilot has been found guilty of repeatedly raping a woman at knifepoint after he broke into her Perth home 21 years ago.

Alfred Gerard Eravelly, 50, broke into the victim’s Scarborough home in the early hours of March 9, 1996, then tied her up and sexually assaulted her, leaving behind DNA that was later analysed and led to his arrest.

He was charged with five counts of aggravated sexual penetration without consent and one count each of burglary, unlawful detention and unlawful wounding after he flew back to Australia from Kuala Lumpur in February last year.

After a six-day trial in the District Court of WA, he was convicted of all charges and will be sentenced on June 22.

#F1 Vettel-Hamilton battle could it get even better? Bahrain Next Fri/Sat/Sun

Two races on two very different tracks with two winners in two very closely matched cars — the 2017 season is already shaping up to be a thriller. At both races the result could have swung either way and at this stage it’s impossible to guess which way the next round will go. Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel have a fight on their hands, and they’re relishing the battle.

“Right now, we’re fighting up against a four-time world champion,” Hamilton said after the race. “He is at his best and he is phenomenally quick. Ferrari are at their best in years. So we’re at our best as a team, and I feel like I’m at my best.

“The ultimate fighter always wants to go up against the best battle he can have because then when you come out on top, it’s so much more satisfying. I love this fight. It’s going to go right down to the end of the season, and I hope for both of us there’s nothing mechanical comes between our sheer battle in ability.”

‘We Stepped Over Dead Bodies On The Streets To Escape’: BBC Yalda Hakin in Mosul

BBC World News foreign correspondent Yalda Hakin on reporting in Mosul

“First they shot my father dead, then as we tried to get away, the sniper shot my mother. I hate [ISIS], they are evil criminals,” 12 year old Mohamad tells me.

Covered in dust, his loose fitting trousers are rolled up and his flip-flops torn, all reminders of the horrors he has endured in the past few days as he fled his home in west Mosul. Mohammad recalls in graphic detail how he and his two younger brothers managed to get away, leaving the corpses of their parents behind and treading on other dead bodies.

The city of his birth is now destroyed. Reduced to rubble. For almost three years Mohamed had lived under the brutal rule of the Islamic-State and its so called Caliphate. His parents stopped sending him to school, like so many others because of the change in curriculum once ISIS came to town. The only thing the children were being taught at school was to kill, that all other religions and sects deserved to die and that it was for the greater-good of the caliphate and for the sake of Islam.

I met Mohamed when we visited the Hamam Al-Alil camp just South of Mosul, while reporting for BBC World News. He is now eager to learn again. Every day he comes to the camp’s makeshift UNICEF school. He grips tightly onto his new schoolbag given to him by the aid agency. Mohamad says he doesn’t think about the future, he just doesn’t want ISIS to return to his city…

Perth flight locked down over white powder

PASSENGERS arriving at Perth Airport from the WA Pilbara town of Onslow were quarantined after a mystery white powder was found in the luggage hold of a Virgin Australia aircraft.

Firefighters in chemical suits boarded the plane after it landed at Perth airport on Tuesday morning and helped passengers evacuate before securing the substance – believed to be a white powder – and removing it from the aircraft.

Officials quickly established that the substance was not explosive and at about 1pm Virgin Australia confirmed that the white powder was harmless.

The passengers were mostly FIFO workers and were held in an airport lounge while staff from the Chemistry Centre attempted to determine what the substance was.
