India monsoon: Landslide pushes buses into gorge killing 45 people

A massive landslide in northern India has swept two packed buses off a hillside into a deep gorge, killing at least 45 people, officials say.

The vehicles had stopped for a break when the landslide, triggered by days of heavy rain, hit a road in Mandi district, in Himachal Pradesh state.

The army has joined the search efforts. Five people have been rescued with severe injuries, reports say.

Landslides are common in India in the monsoon season from July to September.

A stretch of the road, some 200km (124 miles) from state capital Shimla, was completely washed away. Several houses and other vehicles were also destroyed.

Officials said the death toll could rise as some people were still missing.

UK to launch inquiry into tainted blood product that killed 2,400 patients

UK officials will launch an inquiry into why thousands of patients, many of them hemophiliacs, became infected with HIV and hepatitis C from blood products used more than 30 years ago.

Those infected were treated with blood-clotting agents, a Downing Street spokesman said Tuesday.
Some 2,400 people died as a result of the tainted blood treatment, “and it was necessary to establish the causes of this appalling justice,” the spokesman said.
Those affected will help decide what form the inquiry will take, he said. The inquiry will span the entire United Kingdom.

Relatives and friends of up to 600 people who may have been trapped inside the tower block have been searching desperately for their loved ones after their homes turned into a blazing inferno.

MANY MISSING

Saber Neda, 57, lived in a top-floor flat and stayed behind after urging wife Shakila, 45, and son Farhad, 24, to flee. His nephew Rashad Naqshbandi, 24, said Mr Neda stopped answering his phone at around 6am yesterday, while his wife and son are in a coma because of the smoke.

“I’ve already lost a friend, Yasin, and his whole family,” said Mr Naqshbandi. “I know they’re dead because they barricaded themselves in.”

Ali Yawar Jafari, 82, had been in a lift with his wife and daughter, but he reportedly got out on the 10th floor saying there was too much smoke and he could not breathe. His son Hamid posted his photo and an appeal for help on Twitter.

Another pensioner, 75-year-old Abdel Salam, rang his sons and told them: “I can’t breathe.” He is feared to be among the dead.

Nura Jamal, who lived on the 23rd floor, is feared to have died with her sons, aged six and 11. She rang a friend at 2am and said: “Forgive me, the fire is here, I’m dying.”

Zainab Dean, who lived on the 14th floor with her two-year-old son Jeremiah, is also missing. Her brother Francis Dean, 47, said he had last spoken to her on the phone in he early hours and told her to get out…

Ocean garbage can power homes

Mr. Trash Wheel is a solar and water powered trash cleaner that keeps garbage from the ocean and it’s then converted into energy. Inner Harbor.[1][2] Rubbish from the streets of Baltimore is flushed into storm drains, and it ends up in the Inner Harbor.[3] Mr. Trash Wheel is powered by the current from the Jones Falls River, and backup power is provided by solar panels when the current is sluggish.[4] The power sources propel a water wheel, which powers a conveyor belt.[1][5] Mr. Trash Wheel removes floating debris using rotating forks that dip into and out of the water, and which then place the trash onto a conveyor belt which moves it into a dumpster
