Storm batters south-west WA as strong winds down trees, damage homes
The storm saw wind gusts peak at 107 kilometres per hour at Cape Leeuwin overnight.
Gusts of 85kph were recorded along the coast of Perth.
A section of Mandurah was blacked out during the night and trees fell on at least two houses — one in Capel and another in Nannup.
The State Emergency Service said it had received 17 calls for help, mostly to attend to roof damage.
While strong winds caused problems over the last 24 hours, rain did not — with Perth recording just over 10 millimetres.
Bridgetown received the heaviest rainfall at almost 28mm, while Manjimup had more than 26mm.
Meanwhile, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a severe weather warning for the Lower South West and Great Southern regions.
The bureau is warning residents in Albany, Mount Barker, Bremer Bay, Gnowangerup, Jerramungup, Walpole and surrounding areas that severe weather is imminent.

AUSTRALIAN Military to tackle domestic terror attacks
As well, special forces soldiers will provide specialised training to state and territory police forces and some may be embedded to improve co-operation.
In certain circumstances, the military could take charge of responses.
The changes, unveiled by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, follow a review into the deadly 2014 Lindt Cafe siege.
Justice Minister Michael Keenan says the changes build on an already strong relationship between the military and police, with police to retain the lead as first responders.
‘But there will be certain circumstances where the Australian Defence Force might be useful,’ he told reporters on the Gold Coast.
‘When that is the case, I think Australians would understand we need arrangements that will allow that to happen.’
Ultimately, the final call about bringing in the military is with the Commonwealth, Mr Keenan said.
Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne refused to be drawn on what might have happened had the changes been in place before Sydney’s Lindt cafe siege in December 2014 which resulted in the deaths of two hostages.
‘It would be quite wrong of me to start trying to re-open the issues around the the Lindt Cafe,’ he said.

DID Tony Abbott just coin a new Trump-like catch phrase for his political campaign?
The former prime minister signed off a speech to conservative fans in Brisbane on Tuesday with a bizarrely familiar line.
“We need to make Australia work again,” he told a crowd hosted by the Institute of Public Affairs. “Because our country is plainly not working as it should.”
The catchy slogan came at the end of a long and revealing speech that wouldn’t have been out of place at a campaign launch, in which the backbencher appeared to outline his vision for the next Liberal government.
The manifesto of ideas comes amid talks of an all-out war within the Liberal Party, and accusations members in the Abbott camp are leaking to Labor.
Between barely veiled digs at the government and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Mr Abbott advised what the party had to do to win the next election.
“The next election can only be won by drawing up new battlelines that give our people something to fight for and the public something to hope for,” he said.
“To take the pressure off the cost of living, let’s stop subsidies for new wind power. To take the pressure off housing, let’s scale back immigration. Let’s make sure there are no known jihadis on our stree

Politicians To Get Pay Rise On Same Day Of Penalty Rate Cut
Despite efforts from Labor this week to block the impending cuts to penalty rates, thousands of Australians are bracing for a hit to the wallet when their pay for working weekends and holidays is trimmed back on July 1. Coincidentally, this is exactly the same day the nation’s federal politicians will receive a pay rise, and a tax cut.
In a bizarre and ironic piece of timing, in just eight days time, some of the nation’s lowest paid workers in the retail, hospitality and fast food sectors will have their penalty rates scaled back — while the base pay for politicians will rise to over $200,000 for the first time, and the Prime Minister scores a $10,000 raise. It is also the same day the government’s deficit levy, essentially an extra tax on the highest-paid Australians (including politicians) expires, which means our representatives in Canberra will score a double-whammy of a pay rise and a tax cut on the same day.
“The Tribunal has decided to increase remuneration by 2 per cent for public offices in its jurisdiction, with effect from 1 July 2017,” the Remuneration Tribunal announced on Thursday.

Destruction of Libya continues as foreign occupiers fight over ownership of the country
The last few months in Libya have been marked by increasing violence. Not that there has been any peace in Libya since 2011 when Clinton and Obama sent NATO and 250,000 mercenaries to destroy all security in the country and leave it a failed state run by puppet extremist governments and criminal terrorists who have robbed, raped and pillaged the country for over 6 years. But the last few months have shown a marked difference in their criminals tactics. The reason is, they see their hold on Libya weakening and they are desperate to maintain control of their fated calf.

Booby-trap blast injures former Greek PM
Police said Papademos’s injuries were not life-threatening, and an Athens hospital source told Reuters he was being treated for superficial wounds to his abdomen and a slightly deeper injury to his right leg.
Greece has a history of small-scale attacks against politicians, businesses and police. Greek police say they intercepted several suspected packages addressed to Greek, German and International Monetary Fund officials in the past two months.
But Thursday’s blast, in which an unnamed police official said two others in the vehicle were also hurt, was the most prominent since a booby-trapped package killed a guard for then Public Order Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis in 2010.
Papademos, a low-key figure who was more of a technocrat than a politician, was catapulted to the forefront of Greece’s debt crisis when he became caretaker prime minister from late 2011 to May 2012, fusing a fragile governing coalition between socialists and conservatives.
The country remains in recession with the highest unemployment rate in Europe, and a stalled creditor review has interrupted payouts under its international bailout programme, its third since 2010.
Papademos also served as central bank governor from 1994 to 2002, and as vice-president of the European Central Bank from 2002 to 2010.
A health ministry official said Papademos suffered injuries to his chest and abdomen after opening a package in his moving car.
Greek media reported the vehicle was armoured, containing the blast within its interior.
Footage from the scene, at a busy intersection in central Athens during rush hour, showed a black vehicle with its hazard lights on, virtually undamaged save for extensive cracks on the front windscreen.
“I felt my car shake … it was like a small earthquake,” an eyewitness told Greece’s Skai TV. He said he saw the doors of the vehicle be prised open from the blast.
“It was total panic,” he said.
Papademos has been in retirement since stepping down as caretaker prime minister in May 2012.
A source said Papademos had just left the Bank of Greece building when the explosion occurred. It was unclear whether the suspect package had been delivered there.
A police source said fragments of an envelope found at the scene of the incident suggested it was delivered to the Academy of Athens, of which Papademos is president.
An envelope containing bullets and addressed to Greece’s general secretary for public revenue was intercepted at a post office branch in Athens on Tuesday.

Ed Sheeran proves more popular with Australians than AC/DC
Popular British singer Ed Sheeran has added several new dates to his Australian and New Zealand tour, matching a record set by AC/DC in the process.
The immensely popular crooner added two shows in Sydney, three shows in Melbourne and two in Brisbane to cater for the high demand.
The addition of the extra dates takes Ed’s number of stadium shows up to 14, which is the same amount AC/DC performed in 2010.
The door is still being left open as to whether The Shape of You singer will tack on even more shows to his tour, with his final schedule still yet to be confirmed.
‘I’m overwhelmed with the response, to match that record is very humbling,’ Ed said.
‘I really can’t wait to get down there.’
The news comes just days after he caused a frenzy online as frantic fans rushed to buy pre-sale tickets to his March 2018 tour.
Tickets from the Ticketek sold out within hours, but quickly reappeared on re-seller sites.
Scalpers tried to offload tickets to the ginger-haired Brit’s show for up to $1000 a pop.
This caused fury among fans who unable to get their hands on any from the original website.
The most expensive tickets for sale on Ticketek’s website only reached a price of around $160.
General sale tickets for the Divide tour are set to be released on Tuesday May 23.

Modi signals re-election credentials as BJP win in UP
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led his party to a historic electoral victory in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, bolstering his ability to push through key reforms at the Centre and putting him in a strong position to win a re-election in 2019.
While the BJP and its allies won 324 of the state’s 403 assembly seats, the Congress got just seven and its ally Samajwadi Party led by chief minister Akhilesh Yadav bagged just 47.
The margin of victory was the largest seen by any party in more than three decades. The BJP ended up with 312 seats on its own.

Yves Saint Laurent have been accused of ‘degrading’ models and ‘inciting rape’ with a new French advertising campaign.
One image shows a reclining woman in a fur coat and fishnet tights opening her legs while another shows a model in a leotard and roller skate stilettos bending over a stool.
The French fashion house’s new poster campaign across Paris, featuring painfully thin models, has sparked outrage with calls for it to be banned.
France’s advertising authority said most of the complaints it received were from people who saw the images as an ‘incitement to rape’.

Ivanka and Bannon clash on climate change treaty’s fate
Steve Bannon and Ivanka Trump are reportedly squabbling over the fate of America’s involvement in a landmark climate change treaty, as the president weighs whether he should prioritize his campaign promises over the diplomatic fallout if he backs out of the Paris Agreement.
The New York Times reported that the president’s top strategist and his daughter are clashing, with Ivanka urging him to stay the course and remain committed to the deal that President Barack Obama struck in 2015 with 193 other countries.
But Steve Bannon, Donald Trump’s most conservative adviser in the West Wing, is pressing him to follow through on a pledge to ‘cancel’ the agreement.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is siding with Ivanka, telling the president that following through would have dire consequences for America’s credibility in future diplomatic negotiations.
