FORMER City of Vincent mayor John Carey has won the seat of Perth

FORMER City of Vincent mayor John Carey has won the seat of Perth, crediting a positive, grassroots campaign for delivering the inner-city electorate back to the Labor party. “We didn’t have many Labor people, we had a lot of locals, we had Liberals working on our campaign,” Mr Carey said.He said his track record in government helped him overcome a smear campaign.“The Liberals threw everything they could at me,” he said. “But my community knew me.“When you do negative politics it comes back and bites you on the bum.”He said concern about the economy and a lack of confidence in politics were the main concerns constituents raised with him during his campaign.

Adele fan gives singer a Smiggle gift card for her son

Adele’s legion of fans have no age bracket.

And that was evident during her Sydney concert at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.

The 28-year-old singer-songwriter was given a gift card for stationery franchise Smiggle, by a young female fan on-stage, in a heart melting moment.

The young girl dressed in a white jacket and with cute braids in her hair, was clearly in awe of her idol.

‘Adele connecting with a very young [fan] who had something for her and gave her a hug,’ the social media user wrote on Twitter.

Labor set for huge WA election win but One Nation falls

Labor is headed for a landslide victory in the WA election with exit polls showing an almost 12 per cent swing in its favour.

The opposition, led by Mark McGowan, needed only a 10 per cent swing to claim the nine extra seats to form government and oust Premier Colin Barnett after 8.5 years.

The Channel Nine/Galaxy poll taken of voters as they left the ballot polls has the swing at 11.8 per cent, which could net Labor 17 new seats for a total of 38.

McGowan in line for historic election win | Perth Now

Labor is predicted to win Saturday’s West Australian with one of the biggest electoral turnarounds in the state’s history.

Polls closed at 6pm, but it was already looking like Labor leader Mark McGowan, not two-term premier Colin Barnett, will be claiming victory later on Saturday night.

Mr McGowan had said on election eve that getting the 10 per cent swing needed to win the extra 10 seats to oust the two-term Barnett government was akin to climbing Mt Everest.

But opinion polls on Saturday, including a Nine/Galaxy exit poll taken of 18 seats, showed Labor would do that just.

Galaxy’s David Briggs said if the swing was uniform, Labor could get an extra 17 seats, but it was likely to get at least 13.

“I think the leadership is a significant issue,” he said, with Mr McGowan outpolling Premier Colin Barnett 45-33 as preferred premier.

‘I WANT TO MARRY HARRY’ Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s romantic Caribbean getaway

PRINCE HARRY and girlfriend Meghan Markle may have been in the Caribbean for a pal’s wedding last weekend.

But many of the guests could not help remarking that THEY were the couple behaving like honeymooners.

The loved-up pair kissed passionately on their balcony, him wearing just a pair of swim shorts and her in a tiny bikini.

At one point Harry swept the Suits actress off her feet and into his arms in a romantic clinch.

And it didn’t stop there. They were fooling around on the beach, playing in the sea, giggling, kissing and holding hands for all to see. A swim-suited Meghan, 35, even sat on her prince’s lap.

UN says world faces worst humanitarian crisis since 1945 with tens of millions starving

The world is facing the largest humanitarian crisis since 1945, with more than 20 million people in four countries facing starvation and famine, the United Nations humanitarian chief says.

Key points:

  • UN humanitarian chief says agencies need more than $US4 billion to avert catastrophes in the Middle East and Africa
  • Tens of millions starving in Yemen, South Sudan, Somalia and Nigeria
  • Devastation from South Sudan’s three-year civil was “worse than it has ever been”

Stephen O’Brien told the UN Security Council on Friday that “without collective and coordinated global efforts, people will simply starve to death” and “many more will suffer and die from disease”.

Pentagon pledges investigation into nude photo scandal

The US Marine Corps calls on more women to come forward as the scandal spreads to other branches.

The Pentagon has pledged a full investigation into a nude photo scandal hitting the American armed forces.

Defence Secretary James Mattis said “all appropriate action” was being taken in all branches of the armed forces.

The scandal began when nude photos of female Marines were published online by male colleagues.

But fewer than 10 female Marines have come forward to make a formal complaint, a top Marine official said.

General Robert Neller said he hoped more women would come forward to help the investigation.

The scandal initially broke when current and former members of the US Marines were discovered sharing naked photos of female servicewomen on Facebook, in a group called “Marines United”.
