The storm is big, fast and speeding westward toward Puerto Rico and Florida

While it is too early know where — or if — Irma will make landfall in the mainland United States, the storm’s predicted track takes it across Puerto Rico on Wednesday. If it continues on that path, it could reach Florida this weekend.

Irma’s maximum sustained winds were measured at 185 mph on Tuesday. Only one Atlantic storm in recorded history has exceeded that level: Hurricane Allen, which slammed into Mexico and Texas in 1980, had top wind speeds of 190 mph.

Record-breaking [9 months+] U.S. astronaut and crew back on Earth

NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson and two crewmates made a parachute touchdown in Kazakhstan on Saturday, capping a career-total 665 days in orbit, a U.S. record.Whitson, 57, ended an extended stay of more than nine months aboard the International Space Station, a $100 billion research laboratory that flies about 250 miles (400 km) above Earth.

”I feel great,” the biochemist said during an inflight interview on Monday. “I love working up here. It’s one of the most gratifying jobs I’ve ever had.”During her third mission aboard the station, Whitson spent much of her time on experiments, including studies of cancerous lung tissue and bone cells.

She also completed four spacewalks, adding to her six previous outings, to set a record for the most time spent spacewalking by a woman.Two crewmates who launched with Whitson in November returned to Earth three months ago.

She stayed aboard to fill a vacancy after Russia scaled down its station staff from three to two cosmonauts.Whitson returned to Earth with Jack Fischer, also with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and Russian cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin, who had been aboard the station since June.

CHRIS Froome has an iron grip on a fourth Tour de France crown after proving bullet proof in the final mountain showdown.

It was the first time in Tour history a stage had finished atop the Col d’Izoard, but Froome ensured it was business as usual in the Alps with a composed display under enemy fire.

Frenchman Warren Barguil delighted the crowd with a second stage win that cemented his place atop the mountains classification.

But a policeman on a motorbike was the real hero.

As the Tour was making its way up a gruelling climb on what was one of the toughest stages, a spectator got a little too close to the riders.

The cop shoved one man away as he chased UAE Team Emirates rider Darwin Atapuma, pushing him into a gutter.

Romain Bardet and Dan Martin took turns attacking Froome, while the Brit also attacked himself, on the steepest slopes of the Izoard at the end of a rugged 179.5km journey from Briancon.

Froome would finish fourth and even if Bardet’s late acceleration trimmed his lead to 23 seconds, the penultimate day time trial — a Froome strength — means it would take a catastrophe for the Team Sky spearhead to lose his grip on a fourth Tour de France.

“It was very, very hard stage with the climb to the finish. I’m happy with today,” Froome said.

“I tried to drop Uran and Bardet, but it was virtually impossible today. Of course it would have been nice to take a bit of time, but all in all I’m pretty happy with that. Two seconds over Rigoberto Uran, who I think will be my main rival in the time trial, I’m pretty happy with that.”

With only a routine Stage 19 and the Stage 20 time trial remaining, Froome’s 23-second lead over Bardet and 29-second advantage on Colombian Rigoberto Uran has all but secured him another yellow jersey.

Team Sky was again imperious, setting a ferocious pace for much of the day. Michael Kwiatkowski was so empty after his effort at the front he literally got off his bike at the side of the road. Mikel Landa, fourth overall, then attacked to draw out Bardet and Uran.

Worse terror attack on London Bridge foiled by chance, police say

The three terrorists who struck London Bridge last Saturday tried to hire a 7.5-tonne lorry on the morning of the attack to kill even more people and inflict an even bigger atrocity on Britain.

Police revealed the attempt to rent the lorry was made hours before they staged the attack, with the trio instead using a rented van to run people over, and then going on a stabbing rampage, killing eight and wounding 48.

The van was hired by the ringleader, named by police as Khuram Butt. Police believe the intended atrocity was on a similar scale to that in Nice, France, in August 2016 when a truck drove into a crowd and left 86 people dead.

The attempted truck hire failed only by chance, because Butt failed to provide payment details. Instead they hired a Renault van from a firm in Harold Hill, Romford, in east London.

Commander Dean Haydon, of Scotland Yard’s counter-terrorism command, said: “Concerningly, Butt had earlier attempted to hire a 7.5-tonne lorry that same morning. When he did not provide payment details, the rental did not go ahead. The effects could have been even worse.”

How The Oceans Became Choked With Plastic: The problem is staggering…

The problem is staggering, and it’ll get worse if we do nothing.

Imagine an area 34 times the size of Manhattan. Now imagine it covered ankle-deep in plastic waste — piles of soda bottles and plastic bags, takeout containers by the mile, drinking straws as far as the eye can see.

That’s a total of about 19 billion pounds of garbage. And according to one of the best estimates available, that’s how much plastic waste ends up in our oceans every year.

“We’re being overwhelmed by our waste,” said Jenna Jambeck, an environmental engineer who led the 2015 study that determined this staggering number. According to Jambeck’s research, this figure is on track to double by 2025 unless something is done, swiftly and at a global scale, to stem the tide of garbage.

Plastic ― a versatile, durable and inexpensive material ― has in many ways been a boon to humanity, used in everything from medical equipment to parts of airplanes. But some of the very traits that have made plastics so popular (they’re cheap, and therefore easy to throw away) have also made them a growing problem in our landfills and oceans. Today, plastics are the No. 1 type of trash found in the sea. Ocean Conservancy, a nonprofit that organizes an annual coastal cleanup event in more than 150 countries worldwide, said plastic debris makes up around 85 percent of all the trash collected from beaches, waterways and oceans ― and that’s just the stuff we can see.

There are also untold numbers of extremely small plastic fragments in marine waters. Plastics are non-biodegradable and merely break down into smaller and smaller pieces with exposure to sunlight. These fragments, known as microplastics, are less than 5 millimeters long, or about the size of a sesame seed. Some are microbeads, tiny pieces of plastic that are added as exfoliants to health and beauty products, while others come from larger plastic pieces that have degraded over time.

Recent studies have found that microplastics can also get washed out of synthetic clothing, like those made of polyester or acrylic. A 2016 paper concluded that a single cycle of a washing machine could release more than 700,000 microplastic fibers into the environment.

The United Nations Environment Programme says there could be as many as 51 trillion microplastic particles in our seas. Many of them have accumulated in five enormous swirling ocean convergences known as gyres. Marcus Eriksen, a co-founder of the 5 Gyres Institute, an organization dedicated to reducing plastic pollution, describes marine microplastics as a “plastic smog throughout the world’s oceans.”

Thousands evacuated in New Zealand after Cyclone Debbie

Rescue workers have used tractors and boats to evacuate thousands of people at the top of New Zealand’s North Island on Thursday as flood waters from ex-Cyclone Debbie surged in what meteorologists said was a once-in-500 year event.

The effects of the former category 4 storm, one level shy of the most powerful category 5, were also still being felt in Australia more than a week after the cyclone pounded Queensland with the town of Rockhampton flooded.

Scores of roads were closed or blocked by landslips across New Zealand’s North Island following two days of heavy rainfall caused by the tailwind of Cyclone Debbie.

The Xbox Games Pass will be a monthly subscription service that gives access to 100 games, Microsoft has said. As such, it works like Netflix or similar to the PlayStation Now service that Sony has offered for years.
