Australia working on missile defence: PM

Australia is developing defences against missile attack but the US THAAD anti-missile system is “not really suitable” for Australia, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says.

When asked on Friday about a possible Australian missile defence system against such threats as a North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile, Mr Turnbull said the Australian focus was on protecting deployed forces in the field.

Speaking to reporters in Hamburg, where he’s attending the G20 summit, the prime minister said the answer to the Korean threat was the denuclearisation of North Korea.

“We are developing missile defences … but the focus is on protecting our deployed forces in the field.”

The question to Mr Turnbull was prompted by comments from former prime minister Kevin Rudd that Australia should consider deploying a missile defence system to defend against attack from a nuclear-armed North Korea.

PM Turnbull shuts down host Sam Armytage over Shorten’s wife’s necklace

SUNRISE host Samantha Armytage was shut down by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull over a blown-over conspiracy theory about Opposition Leader Bill Shorten’s wife’s necklace.

Armytage also attempted to take on the country’s leader during a heated discussion about the big four banks.

Mr Turnbull was heard saying “just let me go on” after the 40-year-old interrupted him while he attempted to explain his government’s recent budget.

“You’ve said repeatedly over the last few days that, ‘Better times are ahead.’ Average Australians are getting hit with taxes, banks and Medicare levies to come, high school fees, increased uni fees — ah why should we be happy?” Armytage asked Mr Turnbull today.

Mr Turnbull explained: “Because what we delivered is a fair Budget.”

“They are the most profitable banks in the world,” he added during the conversation about consumers switching to smaller banks.

“Yes — we know that. But they got their way by being pretty ruthless so it concerns me and all Australians that they will do that again in this scenario,” Armytage interjected.

Turnbull responded: “Well this is a very fair contribution that (the banks) are making and if they try to take it out on their customers, their customers will react very negatively towards them and they find those customers leaving.”

Armytage then confronted Mr Turnbull about Shorten’s wife Chloe, who wore a gold jacket and a necklace during Shorten’s Budget Reply Speech.

“I want to get your thoughts on this Prime Minister — throughout the speech she removed the necklace,” she said.

Conspiracy ­theories from Coalition MPs have suggested she removed the necklace in a bid to avoid looking like a tax-avoiding millionaire, which Shorten was attacking.

A broken clasp has since been revealed as the reason she took the necklace off.

But Mr Turnbull didn’t engage in the question from Armytage after dismissing it by saying: “No I don’t know, I was paying attention to the speech.”

At least 22 killed by collapsing wall at Indian wedding

At least 22 people have been killed when a wall collapsed during a wedding party in western India.

The guests had taken shelter from heavy rain under a tin shack when a wall collapsed onto it in the storm.

Another 26 people have been injured in the accident in Bharatpur, a district in Rajasthan state, 15 of them seriously.

Local media reports say food stalls had been set up along the wall for the wedding.

“The wall and a tin shed attached to it at the marriage venue collapsed due to a storm,” police officer Anil Tank is quoted as saying.

He said the wall was nearly 90ft (27m) long and 12-13ft in height and the collapse trapped many guests.

“The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals immediately and treatment was administered,” he said.

Bharatpur province is around 200km (124 miles) south of Delhi.
