After two marathons Federer sprints into fourth round U.S. Open

NEW YORK (Reuters) – After two marathons, Roger Federer had the after-burners on, sprinting past Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-3 6-3 7-5 and into the fourth round of the U.S. Open on Saturday.

Chasing a sixth U.S. Open title, Federer needed just one hour and 46 minutes under a closed roof at Arthur Ashe Stadium to put away the 31st seed Lopez, leaving plenty in the tank after being forced to go the distance in his opening two matches.

It has been a far different start to the U.S. Open than Wimbledon where an economical Federer stormed to his 19th grand slam title without dropping a set.In his opening two matches at Flushing Meadows, a misfiring Federer had been forced to five sets, first by American young gun Frances Tiafoe then Russian veteran Mikhail Youzhny.

After being broken eight times and committing a whopping 124 unforced errors in those first two contests, a focused Federer tightened up his game against Lopez, operating with his hallmark efficiency.“I struggled the first couple of rounds but I think that had something to do with my opponents. They came out and played very well,” Federer said in his post-match interview on court.

Thousands of Japanese rescuers dig through rubble as rain goes on, at least six dead

Thousands of Japanese rescuers dug through twisted wood and mud on Friday in the wake of freak rains that killed six people and forced nearly 80,000 from their homes, with more rain falling amid warnings of further landslides.

Parts of Fukuoka, on the southwestern island of Kyushu, were hit by 593 mm (23 inches) of rain in the 48 hours to 9:00 a.m. Friday, well over the rainfall of a usual July, the meteorological agency said.

Heavy rain continued to fall, shifting to the northern part of Kyushu, although emergency rain warnings had been lifted.

Six people had died and at least 22 could not be reached, officials said. Just under 80,000 people were ordered to evacuate, down from more than 400,000 at the peak of the rains, with tens of thousands more advised to leave their homes.

“At first, it wasn’t raining that much,” said Sumie Umeyo, a resident of Asakura.

“But they spoke of record-breaking rain and it started raining heavily, then they began closing the roads. We looked outside and the roads were like rivers,” Umeyo said.

Around 12,300 soldiers, policemen and firemen waded through mud and climbed over piles of splintered wood to reach several hundred people cut off by landslides. Large boulders and uprooted trees littered the landscape.

TAXPAYERS billed $1.5 million to replace mobiles/tablets lost by careless public servants last year

TAXPAYERS were billed more than $1.5 million to replace mobile phones and tablets lost or damaged by careless public servants last year.

Defence personnel were the worst offenders, which raises further questions about communications security.

Defence was also required to fix 1031 phones and tablets that staff had damaged — almost half the total 2090 work phones and tablets damaged by public servants in 2016.

It cost an extra $255,826 to replace 340 lost or stolen devices, adding to the total bill of $34 million to supply public servants with phones and tablets over the year.

Bruce Forsyth ‘spends five days in Intensive Care’ following dash to hospital on Sunday after ‘suffering severe chest infection’

SIR Bruce Forsyth was rushed to an intensive care unit on Sunday night after being struck down with a severe chest infection.

The legendary 89-year-old television personality is believed to have returned home following a five day stay in a hospital – reports the MailOnline.

Sir Bruce has suffered a number of health issues in recent years – including a fall in 2015 which saw him rushed to hospital and subsequent surgery for two life-threatening aneurysms after tests were carried out following his fall.

The Strictly Come Dancing star was taken to St Peter’s hospital in Surrey on Sunday night and taken straight to ICU due to his age and the fact he was suffering with a chest infection.
