United States President Donald Trump has praised North Korean leader Kim Jong-un for a “wise and well reasoned” decision not to fire missiles towards the US territory of Guam, easing escalating tension between the two countries.
Reclusive North Korea has made no secret of its plan to develop a missile capable of firing a nuclear warhead at the US to counter what it perceives as constant US threats of invasion, and tension has been rising for months.
Last week, Mr Trump warned North Korea it would face “fire and fury” if it threatened the US, prompting North Korea to say it was considering test-firing missiles towards the Pacific island of Guam.
North Korea’s threat prompted Mr Trump to say the US military was “locked and loaded” if North Korea acted unwisely.
But on Tuesday, North Korean media reported Mr Kim had delayed the decision to fire towards Guam while he waited to see what the US did next.
Following those reports, Mr Trump tweeted: “Kim Jong-un of North Korea made a very wise and well reasoned decision.”
“The alternative would have been both catastrophic and unacceptable!”
