Paul Kelly has achieved his first number one album in a career spanning almost 40 years.
The iconic Australian singer released his 23rd album Life Is Fine last week and has achieved top billing in the Australian ARIA album charts.
Kelly had been writing the record in between his last few projects which included an album of funeral songs made with Charlie Owen and a recent EP of Shakespearean sonnets.
“It’s sort of been brewing for a while. I was making these other records and getting involved in different things off the beaten path,” Kelly told AAP.
The original pop-rock album is reminiscent of Paul Kelly’s classic 80s recordings and has a joyful energy to it.
“I was keen to make a record that was a real contrast especially to the records last year – the Shakespeare record and the funeral record. I wanted to come out with something that was complete contrasting,” he said.
The songs are joyful and there’s some humour on there with singer Vika Bull taking the lead on a tongue-in-cheek track called My Man’s Got A Cold.
Even thought the title track is a ballad about suicide, Kelly insists even that is joyful.
“At the end of the song the narrator decides to live so the song ends with a burst of joy and positivity,” he said.
“I like the light and dark in the song.”
