Terrified dangled midair: Rescuers work to free 100 trapped above river after gondola crash

CABLE car riders have been dramatically rescued after their gondolas were stuck 50ft above the Rhine river in Germany.

Heart-stopping photos show parents clinging to their terrified children as they were brought down by emergency services.

Around 100 people needed plucking from the ride after one of the pods smashed into a support pole.

A mobile crane was brought in to help lower the terrified riders down. There were no injuries.

Authorities said 32 pods were brought to a halt when one crashed into a pillar near the city’s zoo at 3.30pm local time this afternoon.

The rescue was a slow process — with around half of those stranded being brought down by 5.30pm.

Martina and Hans-Peter Rieger, aged 60 and 62, from Dortmund, told local KSTA News that they were trapped for an hour.

They had taken the trip to celebrate their 41st wedding anniversary.
