Property developer Luke Wyllie injured in surfing accident, fractured neck

PROMINENT Perth developer and keen big wave surfer Luke Wyllie is in hospital tonight with a suspected fractured neck after suffering an horrific wipe-out while surfing in WA’s North West.

Although details were sketchy, it is understood Mr Wyllie came to grief when surfing a big swell at a famed yet notorious left-hand reef break known as Gnaraloo, 120km north of Carnarvon.

The father of two had to be evacuated out of the remote location before he was flown to Royal Perth Hospital for medical treatment.

A RPH spokeswoman confirmed Mr Wyllie was “unwell but stable” yesterday amid reports he had had an MRI scan and been put in a brace.

It is believed Mr Wyllie fractured vertebrae in his neck and has multiple fractured ribs, while also being left with lacerations to his body.

The incident has shocked WA’s tight-knit big wave surfing community, where Mr Wyllie is well known for chasing big swells.

Mr Wyllie, 36, is the son of late property scion Bill Wyllie and Perth socialite and philanthropist Rhonda, who flew back to WA from Europe yesterday to be by his side.

He is believed to have been holidaying in Exmouth, with pictures posted on Mrs Wyllie’s Instagram account showing the family at the popular spot last week.

Big wave surfer Mick Corbett said Mr Wyllie was an accomplished surfer in dangerous conditions and would have known what he was doing at Gnaraloo.

However, Mr Corbett said Gnaraloo was treacherous, and noted that people had died while surfing there before.

“One time I actually flew up to Gnaraloo with him and he was one of if not the best surfers out there,” he said.

“There was some pretty heavy hitters in the water at the time and it was about as big as Gnaraloo gets. So he definitely knows his way around there.”

Florida child fatally shoots himself with gun found inside home

POLICE in the US say a four-year-old child has died after shooting himself with a gun he found in his house.

The shooting happened about 5.45pm local time (7.45am AEST) in Tampa, Florida.

In a news release, police said Ashton Gooding found the weapon and discharged it. He was severely injured when police arrived and died shortly after arriving at Tampa General Hospital.

The state attorney’s office is reviewing the case to determine whether charges should be brought.

No further details were immediately available.

French actress Jeanne Moreau, star of Jules And Jim, dies at 89

One of the symbols of France’s New Wave cinema, Moreau also worked with directors like Orson Wells and Michelangelo Antonioni.

The award-winning star, whose films include Francois Truffaut’s 1962 classic Jules And Jim, was found dead at her home in Paris on Monday.

Moreau rose to international fame during the 1960s, having worked with some of the most prominent avant-guarde directors of the time, including Orson Wells, Wim Wenders and Michelangelo Antonioni.

Her most famous role came in Jules And Jim, in which her iconic laugh and modern style became immortalised in film posters.

In it she plays Catherine, a woman in the middle of a love triangle. Despite her character’s name being absent from the film’s title, it was Moreau’s picture which was used to market the film.

Moreau starred in some of the most canonical works of classic cinema, like Antonioni’s The Night, Luis Bunuel’s Diary Of A Chambermaid and Elia Kazan’s The Last Tycoon.

Sydney father accused of pointing gun at 4yo daughter and pulling trigger

A Sydney man who has been charged over an illegal firearms cache pointed a high-calibre pistol at his daughter and pulled the trigger before letting her play with the gun, police allege.

Detectives have charged the 32-year-old man from the southern Sydney suburb of Revesby over the alleged incident as well as an illegal firearms cache and the production and possession of child abuse material.

He was charged with six offences by officers from Strike Force Bowser which is a NSW Terrorism Investigation Squad, however police said the investigation was not terrorism related.

Police said they seized a 25-calibre Walther TP-model pistol, two Colt 1911 45-calibre pistols and a Bentley-brand 12-gauge shotgun from premises at Revesby and Granville.

During the investigation, police said they also accessed mobile phone video footage which allegedly showed the man skylarking with one of the Colt .45 handguns, pointing it at his young daughter and pulling the trigger.

Officers said the weapon did not discharge.

The images also allegedly showed the man pointing the shotgun at the phone camera.

Detectives said further footage showed the child playing with the automatic pistol and pulling the trigger, without effect.

Senior police have condemned the alleged behaviour.

42 calls for assistance: heavy rains + strong winds smashed parts of #Perth + South West

UPDATE: THERE have been 42 calls for assistance after heavy rains and strong winds smashed parts of Perth and the South West this morning.

The wild weather hit the South West from 7am to 8am before hitting Perth just before 11am and then Albany between 11am and noon as a cold front passed through the state.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Megan Colangelo said the cold front had now moved through the city but we could expect more showers and gusty winds for the remainder of the day as the cold air behind the front followed.

She said there was still a chance of a thunderstorm and hail this afternoon, but the storm was expected to ease by the late evening.

Perth has been hit by 14mm of rain since 9am, while Mandurah has received 8.6mm, Swanbourne has had 11.8mm, Garden Island has had 13mm, and 11mm has fallen in Jandakot.

Meanwhile in the South West, Pemberton has been smashed by 40mm and Dwellingup has been drenched by 40.6mm.

Australian triathlon pioneer Garth Prowd dies in Spain after bike accident

TRIBUTES are pouring in from around the world following the death of a man who helped put the sport of triathlon on the map in Australia and the brains and passion behind the biggest race in the Southern Hemisphere.

The much-loved and admired triathlon pioneer Garth Prowd, OAM, died in Spain on Sunday following a bike accident in Barcelona last week.

The man behind the famed Noosa triathlon and multiple world championship events and great friend to numerous high profile triathletes, swimmers, cyclists and Olympic athletes, was in Spain on a family holiday and passed away surrounded by his family.

He was a beloved member of the triathlon and sporting community at large and widely considered one of the sports great trailblazer both in Australia and overseas.

In a statement, the family said while they mourned the loss of a “remarkable man”, his life and contribution to Australian sport would be remembered.

“Garth passed away peacefully surrounded by his family — his greatest love — wife Robyn, daughters Sally, Megan, Katie and son-in-law’s Matt and Ben,’’ the statement said.

“He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many and his loss will be felt by all who knew him.

Kevin Magnussen tells Nico Hulkenberg to ‘suck my balls’: #F1 Hungarian Grand Prix 2017

NICO Hulkenberg accused F1 rival Kevin Magnussen of being “nasty” after they argued over their Hungarian Grand Prix clash in front of television crews.

Hulkenberg found himself stuck behind 11th-placed Magnussen in the closing stage, having dropped back with a slow pitstop then caught up quickly on fresher tyres.

With nine laps to go, Hulkenberg attempted a pass around the outside of the tight Turn 2 left-hander but was forced onto the grass in a move that earned Magnussen a five-second time penalty.

During the post-race television interviews, Hulkenberg approached Magnussen and sarcastically commended him for being “once again the most unsporting driver”.

Magnussen replied: “Suck my balls, mate.”

Speaking to NBC after the spat, Hulkenberg said: “I congratulated him for being the most unsporting driver of the whole grid once again.

“When it comes to racing, he’s just nasty.

“Hard defending is fine but when he does this, it’s just ruthless and sending people into the wall.

“What he did there, opening up the steering, making me run wide, it’s just being an a***hole basically.

“We had really nice words, he said (suck my b****), that was his return, so it’s quite interesting with him.”

Hulkenberg said he would bring the issue up with race direction: “I’ll go and speak to Charlie (Whiting).

“I hear he got a bit of a penalty, five seconds, but in his mind he won’t care about that too much.”

Second typhoon batters Taiwan

TAIPEI (Reuters) – The second storm to hit Taiwan in 24 hours battered southern and central parts of the island on Monday after Typhoon Nesat injured more than 100 people and shut businesses at the weekend.

Financial markets and businesses will be open in Taipei on Monday as the capital returns to normal. However, the island’s second-largest city of Kaohsiung, on the southern coast, will remain shut with the second storm, Typhoon Haitang, expected to bring torrential rain and possible flooding and landslides.

Typhoon Haitang made landfall in the south and southeast on Sunday afternoon, the government said on its website. It is the first time the island has issued alerts for two storms simultaneously in 50 years, the Central Weather Bureau said.

Nesat, a medium strength typhoon with wind speeds of around 119 km per hour (70 mph), made landfall on Saturday but has moved on to China’s Fujian province, the bureau and Chinese state news agency Xinhua said.

It forced the cancellation of over 40 round-trip flights by EVA Airways Corp, Taiwan’s second-largest carrier, affecting more than 10,000 passengers, the airline said.

On Friday, Taiwan’s main index ended down 0.8 percent at 10,423.05 points, while the Taiwan dollar closed at T$30.302 against the U.S. dollar.

Game of Thrones: Olenna Tyrell just dropped the mic in a major way

The third episode of Game of Thrones‘ seventh season saw Olenna Tyrell finally meet her end at the hands of the Lannisters. But as was her style, she still managed to get the last word.

After downing the poison that Jaime gave to her following the destruction of her family’s ancestral home of Highgarden, the fan-favorite Tyrell matriarch revealed that she was the one who orchestrated the murder of Joffrey — Cersei and Jaime’s firstborn son.

“Must have been horrible for you as a Kingsguard, as a father. It was horrible enough for me,” she said of Joffrey’s death. “A shocking scene. Not at all what I intended. You see, I had never seen the poison work before. Tell Cersei. I want her to know it was me.”

Viewers already knew this detail, as it was revealed in season four that Olenna conspired with Littlefinger to poison the sadistic king at his wedding to her granddaughter Margaery. However, it clearly came as a shock to Jaime.

Three plead guilty to plotting terrorist attack on government buildings in Sydney

Two men and a teenager have pleaded guilty to plotting a terrorist attack on government buildings in Sydney.

Jibryl Almaouie, 23, and Sulayman Khalid, 22, pleaded guilty on Monday at a Supreme Court matter heard in Parramatta to planning an act of terror in late 2014.

Another person under 18, who cannot be named, also pleaded guilty to the plan.

The plot centred on carrying out attacks on government buildings, including police headquarters, with firearms.

Almaouie, Khalid and the teen are among six involved in the plot – with the other three having pleaded guilty earlier this year.

Man holding baby has been punched in the face by staff at Nice Airport in France

A British man holding a nine-month-old baby has been punched in the face by a member of staff at Nice Airport in France after remonstrating over a 14-hour delay.

Witness Arabella Arkwright captured the blow in a picture circulated online.

A spokesman for the airline the man was flyinging with, British budget carrier easyJet, said the person in the photograph is believed to work for Nice Airport’s special assistance provider Samsic.

‘It was completely unprovoked,’ said Mrs Arkwright, who was returning from holiday with her husband and children.

‘This guy literally smirked, smiled as if, excuse my French, basically ‘f— you,’ and then whack. It was a proper whacking,’ she said.

EasyJet has apologised for the delay to flight EZY2122 from Nice to London Luton because of a ‘technical issue with the aircraft’.

A spokesman for the airline said: ‘EasyJet is very concerned to see this picture and can confirm the person in the photo is not an easyJet member of staff and they do not work for easyJet’s ground handling agents in Nice.’

Golf: Vegas defends Canadian Open title with playoff win

(Reuters) – Jhonattan Vegas emphatically ended a poor run of form by successfully defending his Canadian Open title with a playoff victory over Charley Hoffman at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville on Sunday.

Venezuelan Vegas, who missed the cut in his last five PGA Tour starts, tapped in for birdie at the first playoff hole — the par-five 18th — moments before overnight leader Hoffman failed to hole out from a greenside bunker.

“To repeat in Canada it doesn’t get any better,” said Vegas, whose seven-under-par 65 gave him a 21-under total of 267.

“I came in here on a really long stretch of five missed cuts, not playing great golf, did a little bit of change on my Mizuno irons this week and it was magic to be honest.”

Both players started the playoff by sending their drives into fairway bunkers but Vegas found some luck when his second shot took a chunk out of the lip of the left bunker yet still carried just off the far edge of the green.

His ball settled in the same area it did in regulation, only that time he chipped it well past the hole and then two-putted for par.
