Plane bomb plot “This is one of the most sophisticated plots that has ever been attempted on Australian soil,” Deputy Commissioner Phelan said.

“This is one of the most sophisticated plots that has ever been attempted on Australian soil,” Deputy Commissioner Phelan said.

A thwarted terror plot to place an improvised explosive device on an Etihad flight out of Sydney was among the most sophisticated attempted on Australian soil, police say.

Australian Federal Police deputy commissioner Michael Phelan said two men charged last night with terror offences were also planning to detonate a hydrogen sulphide, or “rotten egg gas” bomb.

He said the plan had been “completely disrupted”.

“Not only have we stopped the IED that was believed to go on the plane but we have also completely disrupted the intended chemical dispersion device,” he said.

Police alleged the men began communications with Islamic State in April.

The first plot involved an attempt to place the IED on an Etihad flight out of Sydney on July 15. The attempt was aborted.

The second plot allegedly related to an improvised “chemical dispersion device”, designed to release the highly toxic hydrogen sulphide.

Four men were arrested as part of terror raids in Sydney on Saturday night. Two have been charged, one has been released, and another remains in custody…
