US online retail giant Amazon announces plans for its first major Australian warehouse, which it says will employ hundreds of people in suburban Melbourne.
The company — which is feared by many Australian retailers as a major commercial threat — says it will immediately start recruiting staff to the 24,000 square metre warehouse at Dandenong South, in Melbourne’s south-east.
“This is just the start,” Amazon’s director of operations for Australia, Robert Bruce, said in a statement.
“Over time, we will bring thousands of new jobs to Australia and millions of dollars of investment as well as opening up the opportunity for thousands of Australian businesses to sell at home and abroad through Amazon Marketplace.”
