Hundreds of millions of dollars of cocaine set for Australia seized by the French Navy

A record-breaking cocaine haul heading to Australia has been seized by the French Navy in the South Pacific.

A massive 1.464 tonnes of cocaine was seized near New Caledonia on July 27, after authorities discovered the stash tucked away inside the hull of a yacht.

Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission Officials worked with the French Navy to coordinate this massive bust, which authorities estimate could have resulted in about 1.5 million street transactions.

The Herald Sun reports that South American crime lords were behind the drugs being stashed aboard the yacht Afalina.

Four crew members from Lithuania and Latvia were found on board and arrested after the vessel was towed to Noumea for further investigation.

ACIC executive director of intelligence Col Blanch Australian authorities worked closely with French officials to catch the haul, estimated to be work $322 million on the streets.
