Republicans set repeal vote as Trump’s plans for healthcare replacement fall apart

Republicans are divided ahead of the party’s vote to repeal Obamacare without a replacement, with a number of senators voicing their opposition.

US Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell has set a vote on a straight repeal of Obamacare after efforts to overhaul the law collapsed.

But the new approach began to unravel yesterday as three Republicans announced their opposition to the more hardline repeal-without-replacement plans, while others voiced doubts.

Repealing and replacing Obamacare has been a top Republican goal for seven years, and President Donald Trump made the promise a centrepiece of his White House campaign.

Mr McConnell gave up on efforts to overhaul the 2010 Affordable Care Act late on Monday after it became clear he did not have the votes.

Instead, he announced plans to vote in coming days on a two-year transition to simply repeal the healthcare law with no replacement.
