Police officer in hospital after samurai sword attack
A police officer is recovering in hospital after being attacked with a samurai sword in Perth’s southern suburbs.
The incident happened about 5:30pm on Wednesday at a house on Parkin Street in Rockingham.
The officer, who is believed to be in his mid 50s, received a deep wound to his head and was taken by ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital.
Police said a man had been taken into custody and the sword seized as evidence.
A hospital spokesperson said the officer was in a stable condition.
No further details were immediately available.
Thousands evacuated central California, wildfires burn across U.S. West
There were 46 active large fires spread across 12 states, with 11 new blazes reported on Tuesday alone, according to National Interagency Fire Center website.
Around 4.4 million acres have been burnt since the start of 2017, compared to 2.7 million acres in the same period last year, it said.
Dry and windy conditions have fueled the wildfire season and thousands of people have been evacuated, including in Oregon and Nevada.
Firefighters managed to contain 5 percent of the Detwiler Fire, which threatened 1,500 structures in tiny foothill communities in the Sierra Nevada mountains, authorities said. Around 2,000 residents were ordered to flee Mariposa, California on Tuesday.
“Going to bed unsure whether Mariposa, my sweet hometown, will exist when I wake up,” Jennifer Paquette said on Twitter late on Tuesday.

Former Spanish banker found dead with shot to the chest
Agents have ruled out a homicide and are investigating whether Miguel Blesa’s dead is an accident or suicide, a spokeswoman with the Civil Guard said Wednesday, requesting anonymity in line with the police force’s protocol.
Blesa was chairman of Caja Madrid, one of the Spain’s top banks until it was merged with seven other domestic savings banks in 2011 to form Bankia SA, which later had to be nationalized and bailed out for 18 billion euros ($24 billion).
Blesa also appeared in the documents of the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca that was investigated for offshore accounts.

Thailand: Guilty Verdicts in Landmark Trafficking Trial 103 suspects include 20 officials
A Thai court began handing down guilty verdicts Wednesday at the culmination of the country’s largest ever human trafficking trial, Reuters reports.
Bangkok’s Criminal Court Division for Human Trafficking had been trying 103 suspects — including 20 government officials and a Thai army general — accused of trafficking stateless Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar and Bangladeshi nationals across the Thai-Malaysia border.
Thai authorities began making arrests in 2015 after dozens of trafficking victims were found buried in a mass grave in a jungle in the country’s south. Some of the suspects in the case face life imprisonment for human trafficking, holding people for ransom, murder, and other crimes.
Only one of 22 defendants whose cases concluded in a morning session was found not guilty, according to Reuters. More guilty verdicts are expected to follow.
Southeast Asia-based non-profit Fortify Rights called the trial an “unprecedented effort by Thai authorities to hold perpetrators of human trafficking accountable” in a press release Tuesday, but noted that the proceedings were beset by threats against witnesses, interpreters and police investigators.

Justine Damond: Police ‘heard loud sound’ may have been from a fireworks display
A Minneapolis police officer whose partner shot an Australian woman was “startled by a loud sound” just before the incident, investigators say.
Justine Damond, originally from Sydney, was gunned down after calling police to report a possible crime.
On a police radio recording, an officer mentions fireworks being let off near where the shooting happened.
Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has said he wants answers from the US over the killing.
“It is a shocking killing, and yes, we are demanding answers on behalf of her family,” he told Australian TV.
Officer Mohamed Noor, who was sitting in the passenger seat, fired his weapon across his partner and through the driver’s side window, striking Ms Damond, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) said.
Officer Noor has refused to speak to investigators and US authorities say they cannot compel him to give a statement.
But the BCA said that Officer Matthew Harrity, who was driving the car, had told investigators that Ms Damond had come towards the car immediately after he heard a loud sound.

#F1 Cosworth begins work towards 2021 Formula 1 return
The firm has powered cars to 176 grand prix wins and last competed in F1 with Marussia in 2013.
Although the plans have not been officially signed off, the push towards a simpler and cheaper turbo hybrid V6 is sufficient to make Cosworth look towards F1 again.
Cosworth CEO Hal Reisiger said optimism over future rules plus positive talks with teams had convinced him to start committing resources to an F1 project.
“I think that we’ve got sufficient support from the existing teams, and we’ve had discussions with some, that enable us to make the commitment to proceed,” Reisiger told Autosport.
“More teams committed for a longer term is always better.
“But we have some verbal agreements to partner with some existing and future teams that would enable us to be a sustainable engine partner.”
Cosworth has agreed to play a significant role in new F1 working groups being set up to finalise the 2021 rules.
Reisiger wants F1 to move away from the heat energy recovery element that has proved so troublesome for current manufacturers…

France’s armed forces chief resigns over Macron budget cuts
PARIS (Reuters) – France’s head of the armed forces resigned on Wednesday after a heated dispute with Emmanuel Macron over defense budget cuts, bringing to a head an early test of the newly elected president’s mettle.
In a statement, 60 year-old Pierre de Villiers said he had tried to maintain a French defense force with the ability to do an increasingly difficult job within the financial constraints imposed on it, but was no longer able to sustain that.
“In the current circumstances I see myself as no longer able to guarantee the robust defense force I believe is necessary to guarantee the protection of France and the French people, today and tomorrow, and to sustain the aims of our country,” he said.
Macron had accepted his resignation, de Villiers added.
A fierce row broke out last week between the two men just two months after Macron was elected, and just as France prepared for the military pomp of a July 14 Bastille Day parade where Macron’s U.S. counterpart Donald Trump was the guest of honor.

Third-hottest June globally puts 2017 on track to make one of three hottest years
Last month was the third-hottest June on record globally, temperature data suggest, confirming 2017 will almost certainly make a hat-trick of annual climate records, with 2015, 2016 and 2017 being the three hottest years since records began.
The figures also cement estimations that warming is now at levels not seen for 115,000 years, and leave some experts with little hope for limiting warming to 1.5C or even 2C.
According to new figures from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa), June 2017 was the third-hottest June on record, beaten only by the two preceding Junes in 2015 and 2016.
The Noaa data show combined land and sea-surface temperatures for June 2017 were 0.82C above the 20th century average, making a string of 41 consecutive Junes above that average.
June 2016 still holds the record at 0.92C above the 20th century average, followed by June 2015 which was 0.89C above the baseline.
The data line up closely with Nasa figures released last week, which are calculated slightly differently, finding the month was the fourth-hottest on record – with June 1998 also being warmer in their data set.
Based on the Nasa data, climate scientist and director of Nasa’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies Gavin Schmidt estimated that 2017 was probably going to be the second-warmest year on record after 2016, but would almost certainly be among the top three hottest years…
Cornwall flash flood: Forces families to flee, destroys 50 homes as 4ft torrent tears up roads
A CORNISH village was hit by a four-foot deluge of water as flash floods washed away roads and sent families fleeing last night.
Picturesque Coverack – which sits precariously on the south Cornwall coast – was hit by flash flooding as torrential rain hit the South West.
One elderly couple had to be winched to safety by helicopter in what was described as a “life critical condition”.
They had reportedly been trapped inside their home along with four others – although no injuries have been reported.
At least 50 properties were damaged by the disaster – which some locals likened to the devastating floods that battered fellow Cornish town Boscastle in 2004.
Dramatic footage showed raging waters tear through Coverack as villagers likened it to a disaster movie…
Man arrested in WA after flight disruption
A Qantas spokeswoman said the man, 38, repeatedly failed to follow crew instructions on the overnight flight, prompting the pilot to return QF652 to Perth after about an hour in the air.
The man was arrested by Australian Federal Police on arrival and the flight was delayed by about three hours, arriving in Brisbane at 8.30am on Wednesday.
An AFP spokeswoman said the man was expected to face charges including assaulting aircrew, harming a Commonwealth officer and obstructing police.

Cyclist may be key to Justine Damond US death
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said on Tuesday the two officers at the scene, including Officer Mohamed Noor who fired the fatal bullet, saw a white male aged between 18 and 25-years-old on a bicycle immediately before the shooting.
Officer Noor’s partner, Officer Matthew Harrity, told BCA investigators about the cyclist.
The individual stopped at the scene and watched as the officers provided medical assistance to Ms Damond after Officer Noor shot her, the BCA said.
“I would implore the person to come forward,” Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges told a press conference.
Ms Damond, who was raised in Sydney, died in her pyjamas on Saturday night after calling Minneapolis police for help, fearing a sexual assault was happening in an alley behind her Fulton home.
Officer Harrity also provided fresh insight into why Officer Noor may have suddenly shot Ms Damond just before midnight on Saturday.
The BCA investigators said Officer Harrity told them as he drove the police vehicle down an alley behind Ms Damond’s home “he was startled by a loud sound near the squad” car.
He said Ms Damond approached the driver’s side window of the car immediately after the sound.
Officer Harrity said Officer Noor then discharged the weapon, striking Ms Damond through the open driver’s side window.
Ms Damond died at the scene from the gunshot to her stomach.
Officer Noor has declined to be interviewed by BCA agents, and his lawyer has not provided clarification on when, if ever, an interview would be possible.
“We cannot compel Officer Noor to make a statement … but I wish that he would,” Mayor Hodges said.
Ms Damond, 40, was set to marry her American fiance, Don Damond, next month.
Mr Damond, Ms Damond’s family, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and the Minneapolis community have all raised concerns about the lack of information released after the killing.
A police radio recording from the incident includes a reference by one unnamed officer that fireworks may have been set off at the time of the shooting.
The BCA said crime scene personnel recovered a cell phone near Ms Damond.
She was not carrying a weapon.
Investigators also confirmed police body cameras were not turned on until after the shooting incident.
The squad car camera was not turned on.
Investigators said they are aware of no video or audio of the shooting.

Woman found dead at buck’s party in Melbourne from WA
Police have ruled out foul play in the woman’s death, after she was found at the Oaks on Market serviced apartments on Sunday morning.
Four men aged in their 20s and 30s and visiting from the ACT and NSW to attend the buck’s party, were taken into custody for questioning before being released without charge.
