SAKHIR, Bahrain — The top three cars were split by just 0.066s during the second practice session for the Bahrain Grand Prix, with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel just pipping Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas and Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo to the fastest time.
Second practice is the only free practice session held under the floodlights in Bahrain, meaning the conditions are as close as the teams get to Saturday evening’s qualifying and Sunday evening’s race. Using the super-soft compound tyre, Vettel set the overall fastest time of 1:31.310, but without setting the best time in any of the three sectors — underlining just how close it is at the front.
Bottas was just 0.041s off Vettel — losing most of his time to the Ferrari in the middle sector — while Ricciardo was just another 0.025s off in third. If the practice form holds true for the rest of the weekend, a thrilling three-team battle could emerge with Red Bull potentially back in the mix for the front row of the grid…
