While many people are now aware that a spoonful of sugar in your morning cup of tea is as harmful for your health as it is for your waistline, what not so many know is that sugar comes in many forms and with countless names.
This is why the Australian consumer watchdog, Choice Australia, have done some research into the world of added sugar labelling in Australia.
The results? People could be consuming as many as 26 spoonfuls of added sugar unnecessarily each day and a whopping 38 kilograms each year.
The researchers took a look into how much intrinsic (necessary and naturally-occurring) sugar is present in several common food items, as well as how much was added to make them taste better.
‘Added sugars provide empty kilojoules, or kilojoules with little or no associated nutrients,’ Choice reported.
‘Excess intake of added sugar is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, obesity, dental caries and cardiovascular disease.’
Choice also stated that from malt to agave and maple syrup to molasses, there are countless words for sugar, which often confuses people. It pays to be aware of these and to shop accordingly…
