Digger museum refurbished in French town

Veterans Affairs Minister Dan Tehan has thanked the people of a French town for maintaining the memory of Australian troops who fought in World War I as he helped open a refurbished museum in the local school.

The Victoria School was built for the community of Villers-Bretonneux in the 1920s as a gift from the state of Victoria after the original school was destroyed in the fighting.

The children of the school are taught to sing “Waltzing Matilda” and a sign above the playground reads “Do Not Forget Australia”.

The refurbished museum upstairs contains displays of Australian soldiers’ wartime experiences in the region including their successful battle to repel a German offensive that threatened the town, for which the community remains grateful.

The refurbishment cost around $A3.7 million, with the Australian government contributing around $2 million.

Mr Tehan on Monday joined town mayor Patrick Simon in cutting ribbons and unveiling a plaque before presenting the mayor with an Akubra hat and inspecting exhibits in the new museum.

The minister thanked the people of Villers Bretonneux for maintaining the memory of Australian soldiers’ sacrifices during the war and stressed the need to keep up Australia’s strong connections with the town and other WWI battlefield communities.

“It’s incredibly important because a hundred years ago we lost so many lives here and we know those lives weren’t wasted because the way that the French people, and particularly the people of this town, say thank you is just unbelievable,” Mr Tehan said.

Villers-Bretonneux is decked out with Australian flags and cut-outs of kangaroos and koalas ahead of Tuesday’s dawn service at the nearby Australian Memorial where Mr Tehan will address thousands of expected Australian and local participants.

Train stops wanted gunman in his tracks – armed police arrested him

AN armed man who allegedly terrorised staff at a bottle shop in Perth’s south has been arrested, after his attempts to flee police were thwarted by an oncoming train.

The 21-year-old man was pulled from his car by officers on North Lake Road on Sunday, after allegedly leading police on a chase in South Lake.

Police say the same man pulled a knife on customers and staff at a Cockburn bottle shop on Sunday afternoon before the store closed.

The man allegedly got into a silver Hyundai sedan and drove erratically through the carpark before he tried to enter the bottle shop for a second time.

But staff had already locked the doors, with the man allegedly making threats to harm the staff inside.

Officers on patrol spotted the man’s vehicle about an hour later, but the driver refused to stop.

During the chase, the man approached a level train crossing but the boom gates were down for a passing train.

The man was forced to stop his vehicle and police swooped, with the knife allegedly recovered.

The 21-year-old Hamilton Hill has been charged with making threats to kill, going armed to cause fear, no authority to drive, failing to stop and driving with excess 0.05.

He appeared in court on Monday and will reappear on May 8.

Cheese contains a compound that could prevent liver cancer – it may even help you to reach 100!

Many people avoid regularly eating cheese over fears of what it may do to their waistlines.

Yet, eating aged cheeses, including cheddar, brie and parmesan, could boost your liver health.

These cheeses contain a compound, known as spermidine, that stops damaged liver cells from replicating.

This may prevent liver fibrosis – the accumulation of scar tissue that occurs in most disease of the organ, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which is the most common form of liver cancer.

Liver disease is the fifth biggest cause of death in England and Wales, and claimed over 11,000 lives in the UK in 2014. HCC makes up around half of the approximate 5,500 new liver cancer cases each year in the UK.

Researchers at Texas A&M University analysed spermidine treatment in mice.

When give over their entire lifespan, life expectancy increased by 25 per cent.

If the compound gave this life-length boost to humans, it could help them to reach 100, rather than the current life expectancy of 81, The Express reported.

Yet, any amount of spermidine could be beneficial.

Further research is required to determine if the compound can be made into a supplement.

Former West Coast rookie Ben Sharp jailed for nine years for armed robbery

FORMER West Coast rookie Ben Sharp has been sentenced to nine years’ jail for a drug-fuelled armed robbery north-west of Melbourne.

The 30-year-old stole $287,750 during an armed robbery on a cash transport van with his younger sibling Christopher, 26, and friend Nathan Lack, 35, outside the Sunbury McDonald’s in late 2014.

Sharp, who was also convicted for trafficking 310 grams of high-level purity methylamphetamine to Western Australia, will spend a minimum six years in jail before becoming eligible for parole.

Judge Geoffrey Chettle told the Victorian County Court that Sharp blamed his senior Eagles teammates at the time for kickstarting his drug habit.

“You claimed (using cocaine) was part of the culture that existed at the football club at the time,” Judge Chettle told the court.

“You claim that senior members of the club required you to be in or out.

“Either you used or you left, you chose the former.

“Your involvement with drugs … does not in any way excuse your offending, but it does however give the court some understanding of how an intelligent and talented sportsman from a hardworking family can find himself where you now sit.”

Judge Chettle also mentioned the 2008 report by retired Victorian Supreme Court judge William Gillard, which was released by the Herald Sun last month.

“The report referred to this morning, provided by your counsel… exposes the extent of drug use at that club,” he said.

A former friend of troubled Brownlow medallist and West Coast premiership hero Ben Cousins, the Victoria-raised Sharp was picked up by the Eagles in the 2004 rookie draft.

He was delisted at the end of 2007 without playing a senior game, but made 57 WAFL appearances for West Perth.

He returned to Melbourne in 2008 where he tried a six-month rehabilitation course, but couldn’t control his spiralling drug use

Choice Australia: Consuming 26 SPOONS of added sugar each day…

When looking at the added sugar inside popular items, the watchdog started with breakfast, which they described as a 'serial offender' (pictured)

While many people are now aware that a spoonful of sugar in your morning cup of tea is as harmful for your health as it is for your waistline, what not so many know is that sugar comes in many forms and with countless names.

This is why the Australian consumer watchdog, Choice Australia, have done some research into the world of added sugar labelling in Australia.

The results? People could be consuming as many as 26 spoonfuls of added sugar unnecessarily each day and a whopping 38 kilograms each year.

The researchers took a look into how much intrinsic (necessary and naturally-occurring) sugar is present in several common food items, as well as how much was added to make them taste better.

‘Added sugars provide empty kilojoules, or kilojoules with little or no associated nutrients,’ Choice reported.

‘Excess intake of added sugar is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, obesity, dental caries and cardiovascular disease.’

Choice also stated that from malt to agave and maple syrup to molasses, there are countless words for sugar, which often confuses people. It pays to be aware of these and to shop accordingly…

Brass Monkey Hotel defends GI Jane Anzac Day eve event

THE Brass Monkey Hotel has once again come under fire after punters labelled their Anzac Day eve event ‘disgusting’ and ‘tasteless’.

The GI Jane event is ‘celebrating sisters that serve’, with the poster (above) mentioning prizes for those who dress up.

Comments on the event poster say the venue should be “disgusted”.

“Anzac eve is nothing to be celebrated Brass Monkey Hotel and should not be used in any form of party related marketing,” Matt Ward said on Facebook.

Monique O’Neill contacted PerthNow to voice her distaste at the “incredibly disrespectful” event.

“We don’t even clap at Anzac Day ceremonies and yet they’re having cheap drinks and DJs,” she said.

The outrage comes after the hotel was slammed on social media for their promotion of a frat party in late December.

Under the Protection of Word ‘Anzac’ Act 1920, ‘permission from the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs is generally required to use the word ‘Anzac’ in a commercial context’.

PERTH is set to once again become crane city as construction begins on 60 buildings

CRANES are set to dot the city skyline again, with about 60 buildings under construction or likely to begin soon after gaining development approval from the council.

City of Perth 3-D modelling shows the dramatic impact of the new skyscrapers, with about 30 buildings earmarked for central Perth or Northbridge, about 20 in East Perth and almost 10 in West Perth.

The developments include plans for Perth’s tallest building — a $100 million, 62-storey hotel and apartment tower on the St Andrews Church site that will stand 249.5m high — 50cm higher than Rio Tinto’s Central Park.

A $200 million, 52-floor apartment and hotel complex on Milligan Street will be 179m high and become the fifth-highest peak in the central business district.

The range of coming developments shows Perth is increasingly becoming a place where people live and recreate, with most of the new buildings to be apartment towers or hotels.

Australian Defence Force bombs ISIS targets as part of Operation Okra

THE Australian Defence Force has released extraordinary footage of Australian bombing raids on IS targets in the fight against terror.

The ADF has been conducting air combat operations in the Middle East as part of a broader coalition in the fight against the so-called Islamic State as part of Operation OKRA.

Australian F/A-18A Hornet multi-role fighters have been employed as part of the Air Task Group in the continuing fight to curb the territory controlled by the terrorist group.

The aircraft are capable of air to air and air to ground missions.

According to the vision tweeted by the ADF, the aircraft are “striking targets to disrupt and degrade Daesh” (the Arabic language acronym for Islamic State).

Dramatic footage is then shown of missiles hitting a ground target and causing extensive damage.

That footage is of a strike on a former agricultural facility, being used as a bomb-making factory by Daesh in the north of Iraq.

The video shows a simultaneous weapons strike by the Hornets and the destruction of the facility.

Secondary explosions provide proof the site was a weapons facility.

The aircraft are then shown being refuelled midair by a KC-30a multi-role tanker.

Operation OKRA is the ADF’s contribution to the international fight against IS.

The vision was shared on the official account for HQ Joint Task Force 633, which exercises command and control over the ADF in the Middle East region.
