Caffeine can boost enzyme that shields you from dementia

A new study, from Indiana University Bloomington, has found that several compounds – mainly caffeine – can protect against dementia by boosting production of an enzyme in the brain.

That morning cup of coffee could do more than just wake you up.

Caffeine can also protect you against the debilitating effects of dementia, a new study has revealed.

Scientists say the drug boosts the power of an enzyme in the brain that protects neurons and fights misfolded proteins.

Currently, 47.5 million people worldwide are living with dementia and that number is set to increase to 115.4 million by 2050 due to the aging population.

The researchers hope that caffeine, which is consumed by the majority of the adult population, can help slow down the progress of the degenerating disease.
