Lionel Richie reschedules Australian tour

The dancing on the ceiling has been postponed until next year as Lionel Richie has changed his Australian tour dates.The veteran singer was set to come Down Under with Nile Rodgers and his 1970s disco group Chic from September 30 but has postponed his dates until March.

Richie was due to start his US tour in February but pushed that back until July to recover from a knee procedure. The changes to his international schedule have had a knock-on effect for his Australian tour dates.However, Richie has added a date in Canberra to the tour.Tickets which have already been sold remain valid for the rescheduled shows and ticketholders will be contacted by Ticketek with full details.

Ticketholders for the Brisbane show at the Entertainment Centre have not been given another date but have been asked to stand by for a new show announcement during the week of September 18.

Eight Australians caught up in Barcelona attack: Bishop

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says eight Australians have been affected by the terrorist attack in Las Ramblas, including one Australian who remains unaccounted for.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said of the eight Australians affected by the terrorist attack in Las Ramblas, four have been injured, three have required consular support and one is unaccounted for.

“Of the four injured, that includes one woman, who is from New South Wales in a stable condition, but was seriously injured,” Ms Bishop told reporters Friday afternoon.

“A second woman, also from NSW, is in a serious condition in hospital. She was travelling on a British passport.”

She also said two young men from Victoria were injured, but have been discharged from hospital after treatment.

“I have spoken to the Spanish ambassador to Australia and conveyed to him the condolence of the Australian Government and the Australian people and reaffirmed our commitment to stand with Spain at this terrible time.”

She said travel advice has been updated, and that travellers should take caution.

“Again, I remind Australians that if you are worried about loved ones or families, please try and get in touch with them directly, but if you are unable to do so, and you are calling from Australia, the number is 1300 555 135.”

Boy injured after falling onto rocks at Avon Descent white water race WA

A teenage boy has been injured after falling from a bridge onto rocks at Bells Rapids while watching the Avon Descent, a white water race held annually east of Perth.

The accident happened about 11:15am as competitors continued to race through the rapids.

It took emergency services about 20 minutes to stretcher the boy off the rocks, with fast moving water making the rescue difficult.

With a large crowd looking on, rescuers stretchered the boy onto a waiting dingy before moving him to shore.

Police officers, paramedics and rescuers helped lift the boy, who was wrapped in foil for warmth, up a steep slope into a waiting ambulance.

Bells Rapid is about 40 kilometres from the start of day two of racing for the 2017 Avon Descent, and attracted a large crowd of onlookers.

The notorious rapids are the final hurdle for competitors, and represent the end of the difficult section of the race.

Several kayakers came unstuck attempting to navigate the fast moving water.

The Avon Descent covers 124 kilometres of the river.

Tony Cohen, Australian record producer and ”sound of Melbourne”, dies, aged 60

Record producer and sound engineer Tony Cohen, who had a long and celebrated career working with Australian musicians including Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, the Go-Betweens and Paul Kelly, has died aged 60.

Tributes to Cohen, who won three ARIA awards, have begun flowing on social media following a statement on Twitter from his brother Martin, who said Tony Cohen “passed away peacefully in Dandenong Hospital” earlier this week.

“Tony was a legend of Australian music,” his brother wrote. “As brothers we were like chalk and cheese. But, I loved him and fully respect what he achieved in his career. He was technically brilliant, but also a caring, big-hearted man.”

Songwriter, singer and guitarist Kim Salmon, who worked with Cohen on several recording projects, including two Kim Salmon and the Surrealists’ albums in the mid-1990s and the Beasts of Bourbon, described Cohen as “a true great”, adding on his Facebook post it was “an absolute privilege working with him but an even greater honour to count him as a friend”…

Aubin Grove train station opens on Mandurah rail line

A new $72-million train station has opened at Aubin Grove, south of Perth.

The station is between the Cockburn Central and Kwinana stations on the Mandurah line.

About 3,900 people are expected to use the station each day.

The station was opened by the new Labor Government, but Premier Mark McGowan acknowledged the former Barnett government’s role in the project.

Mr McGowan said the station was built while the line was still largely operational.

“This project represents a feat of engineering, with the station largely constructed off-site and then sections craned into place over the last 18 months,” he said.

Bodies recovered in Tweed River tragedy

A TWEED mother was desperately trying to free her children trapped in a sinking car when she died yesterday, police say.

Stephanie King, 43, was found with one of her children in her arms when police divers pulled her body and the bodies of her two children Jacob, 7, and Ella-Jane, 11, from the sunken wreckage of their car in the Tweed River this afternoon.

“That woman is a hero, she died trying to save her children,” Tweed Byron LAC Superintendent Wayne Starling said today.
