Edible crickets: WA farm gets green light to sell insects for food
Crickets have long been flagged around the world as the future of food, gaining popularity in countries such as Vietnam, Canada and America, but Australia has been relatively slow to the game.
Up until now just one other edible-cricket farm, based in Sydney, has been in operation.
But now a south-west start-up company, Grubs Up, is also in the game, producing crickets for protein powder and eyeing off bar snacks and condiments down the track.
The business venture has been a long time in the making for founder Paula Pownall, who quit her job in 2015 to focus solely on the research and development of the cricket business.
Ms Pownall said she was excited to finally be able to sell the crickets to consumers.
“It means that we can actually sell that product and really upscale our business and production on a commercial level,” she said.
No space needed
Inside the cricket farm it is hard to believe it could be the future of protein farming.
Thousands of crickets live inside what are essentially re-fitted laundry tubs, stacked on top of each other.
Ms Pownall said the operation was perfect for her as she did not have a large property, so she needed something that she could ‘vertical farm’.

AGAIN: Kwinana Fwy crash blocks traffic 2nd CRASH
Just 90 minutes after a hatchback left the southbound lanes and rolled south of Thomas Road, emergency crews have again been called out to almost the exact same location.
The second vehicle has also rolled in Anketell, this time roughly 1km north of the Thomas Road exit.
A St John spokesperson said paramedics were still on their way to the scene.
The crash comes after two people were taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital with non-life threatening injuries from a rollover just before 1pm.
The vehicle was left on its roof after the crash in wet and wild conditions.

State of emergency declared in NZ
Timaru local council has warned there is surface flooding, with river levels expected to rise significantly.
Residents in flood-prone areas have been urged to prepare for evacuation at short notice and to evacuate immediately if there appears to be any danger.
EOC Controller Justin Bagust said people in particularly flood prone areas should make preparations immediately.
‘We would strongly advise people in these areas to get themselves prepared to leave as soon as they feel at risk, not to wait for any official notification.
‘This is a quickly developing situation and people need to be ready to go. This means ensuring you have clothes and fuel, as well as things such as knowing where family pets are.
‘We are continuing to monitor the situation to ensure people have notification, but our strong message is that if people feel at risk at the moment they should evacuate themselves to friends or family,’ he said.
A number of roads in the area are closed, with emergency services urging all non-essential travel to be avoided.

Reporter strips to quiz nude swingers on their wife-swapping in bizarre telly segment
A BIZARRE video has emerged of a stunning presenter finding out the bare truths of swinging – with everyone in the clip completely nude.
Host Carli Bei stripped off to meet with members of a swinging community in Jamaica, for the “Naked News” streaming channel.
Standing without a thread on them, couples at the clothing-optional Hedonism II resort in Negril spoke on camera about how they got into swinging and embarrassing moments they’ve had.
Carli asked one nude couple what they ask each other once they have slept with other people.
Taking a matter of fact approach, the lady said: “We ask what we liked, what we disliked, how was the couple, is there something I could have done differently or is there something you would like to do.”
Next the TV host asked a series of partners what had happened when their swinging experiences hadn’t gone as smoothly as they imagined.
One starkers man said: “We met one couple in a bar and two hours talking and we agreed to go back to their house to have some more fun and everything changed.
“Their phone rang and they had a family emergency and they ran out the room.”
