ORGANISED crime costing Australians $36 billion a year, with superannuation accounts identified
ORGANISED crime is estimated to be costing Australians $36 billion a year, with superannuation accounts identified as an emerging and lucrative target for international syndicates.
A report to be released today by the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission says crime gangs are increasingly trying to get their hands on the retirement savings of workers through methods such as identity theft and electronic hacking.
“A recent increase has been observed in the use of targeted online methodologies to fraudulently access an individual’s superannuation account,” the Organised Crime in Australia report states.
“SMSFs (self-managed super funds) are particularly vulnerable to incidents of fraud, in part due to the desire of individuals to source and control their own investments.”
While acknowledging regulators were responding to the new threat, the report found other types of identity crime were rising at an alarming rate…

Trump suggests he will pardon controversial Arizona sheriff
The president’s divisive remarks on Charlottesville violence lead thousands to gather outside the arena.
President Trump on Tuesday stopped short of pardoning former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio but signaled to a boisterous rally crowd here that such a move could be coming soon, saying “I think he’s going to be just fine.”
“I won’t do it tonight because I don’t want to cause any controversy,” Trump said of Arpaio, who was convicted last month of criminal contempt for ignoring a federal judge’s order to stop detaining people because he merely suspected them of being undocumented immigrants.
Trump last week told Fox News that he was “seriously considering’’ a pardon for Arpaio and said he might do it soon, sparking speculation he would use Tuesday’s campaign here to make the move.
At the outset of the rally, a defiant Trump also blamed the media in an extended diatribe for the widespread fallout he’s received over his reaction to the hate-fueled violence in Charlottesville.
Trump opened his rally by selectively recounting the series of statements he made in the days following the melee, arguing that he “spoke out forcefully against hatred and bigotry and violence” but that the media — whom he called “sick people” — refused to report it properly.

Friends,
I’m writing to you in a personal capacity, as a concerned citizen and a father. It has not been my habit to widely offer running commentary on current affairs, nor to presume to weigh in on the events of a given day save those that might be of particular or specific concern to 21CF and my colleagues. But what we watched this last week in Charlottesville and the reaction to it by the President of the United States concern all of us as Americans and free people.
These events remind us all why vigilance against hate and bigotry is an eternal obligation — a necessary discipline for the preservation of our way of life and our ideals. The presence of hate in our society was appallingly laid bare as we watched swastikas brandished on the streets of Charlottesville and acts of brutal terrorism and violence perpetrated by a racist mob. I can’t even believe I have to write this: standing up to Nazis is essential; there are no good Nazis. Or Klansmen, or terrorists. Democrats, Republicans, and others must all agree on this, and it compromises nothing for them to do so.
Diverse storytellers, and stories, can make a difference, and that diversity, around the world, is a crucial strength and an animating force in my business. Often times not everyone agrees with the stories and positions that emerge from this, and that can be difficult. Certainly no company can be perfect. But I’m proud of the powerful art that can emerge, and I’m grateful to all of my colleagues who make this happen. From the potent and compelling narrative of “12 Years a Slave”, to the streets of Pakistan and the bravery of an extraordinary young woman that we saw in “He Named Me Malala”, to name just a few, we’ve never been afraid to help storytellers and artists say important things – hard things, too.
To further demonstrate our commitment, Kathryn and I are donating 1 million dollars to the Anti-Defamation League, and I encourage you to give what you think is right as well. We hardly ever talk about our charitable giving, but in this case I wanted to tell you and encourage you to be generous too. Austrac alleges CBA in ‘serious’ breach of money laundering act
Peter Clark, the acting head of the financial intelligence and regulatory agency, said the moved followed an investigation by Austrac into CBA’s compliance, particularly relating to its use of intelligent deposit machines
The action alleges more than 53,700 contraventions of the act.
CBA acknowledged that the civil proceedings had been brought and said it would have more to say on the specific claims “in due course”.
A statement of claim filed in the Federal Court referred to at least four different money laundering syndicates that are alleged to have used CBA ATMs, but the bank failed to report suspicious activity as required.
“The effect of CommBank’s conduct in this matter has exposed the Australian community to serious and ongoing financial crime,” the statement said.

Plane crash:Thoughts from an OLD Pilot
Wonder why he veered of? Very low [100ft]. Gear still down[?], the wheels hit the Focus Furniture roof they say.
Probably enough room to land straight ahead [on the runway]? Or to do a ‘controlled crash’. If the plane had NOT veered. BUT that is just my THOUGHTS.
Many years ago, I had a takeoff problem. Aircraft started to quickly roll at about 100 ft. In 30 to 60secs it would have been upside down!
Very luckily, I started to reverse everything I had done since take off. The 1st choice was the Flaps. I put them DOWN & that stopped the roll. Wow. When landing we found a small pebble had lodged in the one Flap Channel preventing it from ‘going up’. So in an ‘Up’ mode, I had asymmetric flaps. This was ‘acting’ like an aileron making the plane roll & veer.
