Trump lawyer forwards email praising Robert E. Lee as a ‘great man’
Amid the fallout from President Trump‘s comments that “both sides” are to blame for the weekend’s violence in Charlottesville, his personal lawyer John Dowd forwarded an email to friends and associates casting Confederate army commander Robert E. Lee as a “great man” and saying that the Black Lives Matter movement has been “totally infiltrated by terrorist groups.”
The email, first reported by the New York Times, was not written by Dowd — but contained arguments promoting pro-Confederate propaganda. The email was sent to Dowd shortly after the president’s contentious press conference on Tuesday. Dowd later forwarded the email.
“The following information and argument President Trump should put forth concerning Charlottesville and General Robert E. Lee,” wrote Jerome Almon, the author of the email.
Almon, who has promoted a number of conspiracy theories online and claims to have predicted several terrorist attacks, told ABC News in a phone interview that he is glad to see the information in the email he sent to Dowd “is getting out” and argued that Black Lives Matter is “just as racist as the KKK.”
Almon, who is black, said his email was not meant to be sympathetic of the Confederacy but to make the case that Lee saved the country by surrendering at the war’s end rather than resorting to guerrilla tactics.
“Instead, [Lee] ordered the commander to tell his troops to go home, plant crops, and rebuild,” Almon said in the email he sent to Dowd, adding that “the protesters need to heed General Lee’s advice and go back to the ghettos and do raise their children.”
Almon’s email praises Lee’s actions ending the Civil War but doesn’t go into the divisive issue of slavery.
“You cannot be against General Lee and be for General Washington, there literally is no difference between the two men,” Almon writes in the email, equating the actions taken by the nation’s first president in leading the Revolutionary War to the actions of Lee.
A source familiar with Dowd’s actions says the lawyer was simply forwarding on an email and was not espousing the ideas that it contained. The source said that Dowd is now receiving “hate calls” and that the frenzy created over the email demonstrates how the political discourse has gone “off the rails.”
Almon describes himself as supportive of Trump’s policies and said that the president was correct on Tuesday when he said there was blame on both sides for the violence in Charlottesville.

4 people shot, killed in resort of Acapulco: hotspot in Mexico’s rising drug violence
ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — At least four people have been shot and killed in the Pacific resort of Acapulco, which has become a hotspot in Mexico’s rising drug violence.
An Associated Press journalist saw the four bodies, including a man who lay on a central avenue in Acapulco in broad daylight Sunday with a pink towel over his face. Pedestrians watched from a footbridge as police secured the scene.
The deaths came as Mexico’s violence reached new heights with 2,234 murders in June, the country’s deadliest month in at least 20 years, according to government data. For the first six months of 2017, authorities nationwide recorded 12,155 homicide investigations, or 31 percent more than the 9,300 during the same period last year.
The once-glamorous resort of Acapulco has struggled with surging violence.

Ex-Eels CEO admits salary cap fraud
The manager of Adam Cranston’s payroll company Plutus, which is at the centre of an alleged $165 million tax fraud, has been granted bail in a Sydney court.
Simon Paul Anquetil from Sydney’s Lavender Bay was the 10th person to be charged in relation to what police say is one of Australia’s biggest white-collar crimes.
He faced Sydney’s Central Local Court on Friday charged with conspiracy to defraud the Commonwealth and was granted bail.
The 33-year-old is the facing the same charge as co-accused Cranston who’s the son of Australian Taxation Office deputy commissioner Michael Cranston.
Anquetil, who was initially the sole director and then manager of Plutus Payroll, was arrested on Thursday when he returned from an overseas trip, the Australian Federal Police said.
Authorities say the alleged fraud is one of the nation’s largest corporate crimes “in terms of the number of conspirators and the amount of money involved”.
Ten people have now been charged in relation to Operation Elbrus for allegedly stealing $165 million from the tax office.
Michael Cranston, 58, has been issued with a court attendance notice for allegedly abusing his position as a senior public official.
He is due to face Sydney’s Central Local Court on June 13 and faces up to five years in jail if found guilty.
His 30-year-old son Adam was granted bail on Thursday after his wife and grandmother put up a $300,000 surety. He was required to surrender his passport and will have to attend Bondi police station twice a week.
The others charged include Cranston’s sister, Lauren Anne Cranston, Dev Menon, Devyn Michelle Hammond, Daniel Rostankovski, Jason Cornell Onley, Christopher James Guillan, Aaron Leo Paul and Daniel Simon Hausman.
All were bailed or are due to appear in court at a later date.
Adam Cranston is due to reappear at Downing Centre Local Court on August 29.

Sydney, Melbourne: Snow, Rain + 10c degree drop: Icy Antarctic cold front set to hammer Eastern Australia
On Thursday, more than five centimetres of snow fell in the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales and temperatures plummeted to -6C.
There has been little relief from the chill, with a further centimetre expected to dust alpine areas, including the Victorian Alps, on Tuesday.
Sydneysiders will also be unable to escape the cold front and will wake up to a very chilly May morning on Wednesday, with temperatures expected to drop 6C overnight.
In Hobart, the mercury is expected to plummet to under 10C in less than 24 hours with a drop of 10 degrees expected on Monday.
‘The cold front should really start dropping significantly in Melbourne on Tuesday,’ Senior Meterologst at Weatherzone, Jacob Cronje, told Daily Mail Australia.
Alpine areas are expected to get a ‘light dusting’ of snow mixed with rain on Monday as the icy cold front moves across.
‘It isn’t a dramatic amount of snow,’ Mr Cronje said. ‘Probably one centimetre’.

SOCHI, Russia — Sebastian Vettel led a Ferrari one-two in second practice for the Russian Grand Prix as the Italian team laid down a marker of its pace ahead of the race weekend.
After seeing teammate Kimi Raikkonen go quickest in FP1, championship leader Vettel continued Ferrari’s strong start to the weekend, posting a 1:34.120. Most eye-catching of all was the gap to Mercedes after the qualifying simulations, with Valtteri Bottas 0.670s behind on a circuit many expected the world champions to be strongest on this weekend.
Raikkonen finished second in the other Ferrari, 0.2s behind his teammate. While Ferrari looked comfortable in the qualifying simulations, Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton, in particular, appeared to struggle to get the most out of Pirelli’s ultra-soft tyre. Hamilton twice aborted a lap after running wide at Turn 4 on flying lap attempts, before locking up to avoid the Sauber of Pascal Wehrlein. His final attempt of 1:34.829 was a scruffy one, suggesting there is more pace to come from the Mercedes if both drivers hook up a perfect lap.
Max Verstappen finished best of the rest for Red Bull in fifth in a session which saw him stop on track at the end of the session with a lack of fuel pressure, ahead of teammate Daniel Ricciardo. Red Bull appears to have dropped further behind the leaders after coming closer in Bahrain, looking set once again to be stuck between the lead pair and the midfield battle.
Felipe Massa and Williams led the midfield duel, 2.1s off the lead, with Nico Hulkenberg finishing an impressive eighth, just 0.06s off the Brazilian driver. Kevin Magnussen and the Force Indias followed, ahead of 12th-place Fernando Alonso, who completed 27 laps. Jolyon Palmer finished 13th, 0.4s off teammate Nico Hulkenberg.
Romain Grosjean had a very scruffy session in 14th, complaining about his Carbon Industrie brakes Haas trialled on Friday before the team decides whether to keep them on the car ahead of Saturday’s running, with a return to Brembo the other option. Grosjean had a spin towards the end of the session, prompting more complaints over the radio.
Stoffel Vandoorne returned to the track to finish 16th, finishing between Toro Rosso drivers Carlos Sainz and Daniil Kvyat. Vandoorne has a 15-place grid penalty to serve later this weekend after an MGU-K issue in the morning session prompted McLaren-Honda into a full-scale engine change before FP2 — moving him onto his fifth MGU-H and turbocharger. With a big penalty to come, it is unlikely Vandoorne focused too much on one-lap pace, though his three-second gap to the front will still make for depressing reading for anyone affiliated with the team.
Wehrlein finished 18th, ahead of Lance Stroll, who finished much lower down the order than his FP1 after not setting a time on the ultra-soft tyre, but still completed a healthy 36 laps of running. Marcus Ericsson rounded out the order in the other Sauber.

But Today show co-host Lisa Wilkinson proved she’s just like the rest of us while on-set at Queensland’s Australia Zoo on Friday.
Having experienced an unfortunate tumble, the 57-year-old was given a helping hand by Bindi Irwin, 18.

Protocol dictates that no commoner may lay a hand on a royal person. It’s a rule that courtiers occasionally have to impress on presidents and deluded celebs who imagine their status entitles them to a matey hug or a cuddle.
But a rare film clip, shot on board a Navy flagship in 1947 and revealed on The Royal House Of Windsor (C4), showed a cheeky midshipman really chancing his yardarm, by giving the 20-year-old Princess Elizabeth a saucy pat on the bottom.
Note to Young Hornblower: that is not what’s meant by ‘all hands on the lower deck’.
