‘Shocked’ Irish vet denied visa after failing oral English test. To be sure, to be sure!

Dr Louise Kennedy has been refused a skilled migrant visa after not passing the English oral test despite being a native English speaker and holding multiple degrees.

Earlier this year the pregnant mother, who’s married to an Australian and lives on the Sunshine Coast, decided to apply for a skilled migrant visa.

The veterinarian profession is on the Australian Government’s skilled occupation list. There’s currently a shortage of equine vets, particularly in Queensland.

But she says to her shock, she did not gain enough points in the English oral test component to obtain her visa.

“It was such a shock,” she tells SBS World News. “It’s the only exam I’ve ever gone into not being nervous about.

“It’s taken about two-and-a-half years to get to this point because as a vet you’ve also got to prove your skills as a vet, so I’ve done all of that – that takes about two years – and then to not get it from English is just so frustrating.”

Trump Humiliates Everyone, Including John McCain

The ailing senator gave a stirring address, but after doing the president’s bidding.

Consider the Trump assault: The fake media. Press briefings are a joke. “Regular order” in Congress barely exists. The president insults and bullies his attorney general. Trump’s allies talk of firing special counsel Robert Mueller, appointed by the Justice Department to investigate possible Trump ties to the Russians. The president talks trash to the Boy Scouts. He talks trash about anyone he thinks threatens him.

McCain was just the latest to get run over.

He is no saint, as McCain himself would ruefully admit.

By the time he ran and won the presidential nomination in 2008, he’d become a harder man. He did what his advisers told him, and he took as his vice presidential running mate the utterly unqualified governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin. Then he sent his minions out to trash the press for objecting to the choice.

But I would rather talk about the McCain at a rowdy Minnesota rally in 2008, when a woman in the crowd told him she feared candidate Barack Obama because he was an Arab and a Muslim.

Obama was neither, McCain said.

“I have to tell you. Sen. Obama is a decent person and a person you don’t have to be scared of as president of the United States,” McCain said.

“He’s a decent family man [and] citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues, and that’s what this campaign’s all about.”

That McCain was obliterated Tuesday. I now see him for what, sadly, he is: a Republican comfort station on the road to perdition.

Where Did Trump Dig Up 45,000 Mining Jobs? Data says there’s ONLY 800! FAKE NEWS?

Trump boasted Monday that the nation added 45,000 mining jobs recently — but there’s scant data to back that up. One thing there is evidence for: Only 800 coal mining jobs have been created during his tenure.

“In Pennsylvania, two weeks ago, they opened a mine, the first mine that was opened in decades….Well, we picked up 45,000 mining jobs in a very short period of time,” Trump said during an event pegged to American manufacturing. “Everybody was saying, ‘Well, you won’t get any mining jobs,’ we picked up 45,000 mining jobs. Well, the miners are very happy with Trump and with Pence, and we’re very proud of that.”

During the campaign, Trump repeatedly vowed to bring back coal jobs and attacked Hillary Clinton for turning her back on the industry.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates there are roughly 50,800 coal mining jobs nationwide, 800 of which have been added since Trump took office. (The six months before that, under President Barack Obama’s administration, 1,300 coal jobs were added.)

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard Trump’s numbers. Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt made a similar claim speaking about all mining and logging jobs earlier this year, earning a PolitiFact ruling of “mostly false.”

BLS data estimates the nation has added roughly 41,500 new mining and logging jobs in the first six months of 2017, but just 1,000 of them are mining (not including oil and gas mining jobs, which account for another couple thousand.)

The White House didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Australia to launch cyber attacks on overseas criminals following ransomware attacks

The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) had previously only used offensive cyber attacks to disrupt the activities of the Islamic State jihadi group.

An Australian intelligence agency will be given new powers to launch cyber attacks on criminal networks based overseas, the Turnbull Government has announced.

It comes in the wake of the recent WannaCry and Petya global ransomware attacks that affected computer systems around the world, including in Australia.

The ASD, which is in charge of the country’s digital intelligence, will be given expanded powers to target criminals overseas.

The agency had previously only used offensive cyber attacks to disrupt the activities of the Islamic State jihadi group.

“Our response to criminal cyber threats should not just be defensive. We must take the fight to the criminals,” Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told The Australian…

Margaret Court, Hamou and Nastase – will tennis ever escape the dark ages?

Tennis players whether past or present need to realise that while everybody is entitled to an opinion these arguments are not about morality but tolerance

It is encouraging and correct that tennis players are prepared to comment on issues from homosexuality to sexual harassment, and occasionally politics. Sport does not have to exist in a vacuum. It is not that their opinions matter more than those of anyone else’s, but it is good to know they are not Daleks.

Maybe other sports will follow the example of Andy Murray and others who have spoken out at the French Open, for instance, about Margaret Court’s antediluvian outrage over gay marriage.

Charlotte Riley strips off ahead of King Charles III role | What would Kate say?

She’s set to play the Duchess of Cambridge in controversial new BBC2 drama King Charles III.

And actress Chatlotte Riley has certainly not been afraid to take risks on-screen in the past, stripping off for a racy lovemaking scene in World War II drama Close To The Enemy.

Peaky Blinders star Riley, 35, – who is married to Tom Hardy – was seen romping with her co-star Jim Sturgess in the TV miniseries last year.

The intimate on-screen moment saw her character Rachel’s in the throes of passion with her love interest Callum.

In newly resurfaced stills from the BBC period drama, the actress appears fully nude, bravely baring her figure on camera.

King Charles III, which starts on BBC 2 on Wednesday night is the TV adaptation of a play by Mike Bartlett.

The plot centres around the constitutional crisis that arises after the new king refuses to sign a bill into law that places harsh restrictions on press freedom.

It will show Prince William (played by Oliver Chris) and the Duchess of Cambridge (Riley) as they plot against the king, with Kate goading her husband to seize the throne.

The drama ends with Charles’s abdication and William’s coronation.

Richard Goulding will play Prince Harry, with republican girlfriend Jess Edwards (Tamara Lawrance). The play was written before Prince Harry met Meghan Markle, so she is not part of the script.

Talked about role: She's set to play the Duchess of Cambridge in controversial new BBC2 drama King Charles IIICharlotte, the wife of actor Tom Hardy, previously confessed she watched internet clips of the Duchess of Cambridge to perfect her portrayal of the Duchess.

Riley defended her portrayal of Kate as a scheming Lady Macbeth who wants Charles to abdicate in favour of William.

She told the Daily Mail: ‘She is pragmatic and wants to move things forward for the Royal Family,’ Riley says.

She encourages William to become the man she knows he can be, leading from the front. She’s almost like the CEO of a business.’

King Charles III has caused controversy ahead of his debut this Wednesday since it shows the funeral of Queen Elizabeth and the ghost of Princess Diana.

Tory MP Andrew Bridgen said: ‘It is unfortunate the BBC would seek to promote this flight of fantasy, which many licence-fee payers will find distasteful and which I believe denigrates and undermines our royal family.

‘I hope that the BBC will make clear that the production is pure fiction.’

In the last interview before his death on April 7, Tim Pigott-Smith said how painful the new BBC film, King Charles III, would be for the princes when the ghost of their dead mother Diana, Princess of Wales, appeared.

The actor, who died aged 70, takes on the role of Prince Charles in the 90-minute film that imagines the first days of his accession to the throne after the death of the Queen.

Princess Diana’s spirit appears when Prince Charles comes to the throne as she haunts the rooms of Buckingham Palace and tells her late husband: ‘You think I didn’t love you. It’s not true.’

Mr Pigott-Smith told The Times: ‘One area of the play I found incredibly painful to do was the ghost of Princess Diana. Just because that whole incident was so terrible.

‘I don’t think it is presumptuous of us to do it or wrong of us to do it.’

He went on to describe the scenes as ‘hyper-sensitive’. ‘It would be terribly upsetting for any of them to watch,’ he said.

The director behind the controversial BBC series King Charles III insisted claims that actors turned down roles because of fears of missing out on the Queen’s honours list were false.

Rupert Goold said the reports came from a ‘joke which got taken completely out of context.’

Man loses both legs and arms at risk after white-tail spider bite

A man has lost both his legs and could have his arms amputated in a Melbourne Hospital after he was bitten by a white-tailed spider in Western Victoria.

Terry Pareja from the Philippines was visiting family in Birchip when he was bitten but did not realise anything was wrong until his foot began swelling the following day.

No doctor was available in the tiny town of 662 people — and by the time he sought medical help on Monday, flesh-eating bacteria had taken hold.
