UPDATE: 21 killed and 50 wounded in Cairo church bombing

Some 21 people killed and at least 50 were injured in an explosion inside a church in the Egyptian Nile delta city of Tanta on Sunday, Egypt’s state television reported.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility and the cause of the blast was not yet known.

A bombing at Cairo’s largest Coptic cathedral killed at least 25 people and wounded 49 in December, many of them women and children, in the deadliest attack on Egypt’s Christian minority in years.

Christians make up around 10 per cent of Egypt’s population and have repeatedly been targeted by Islamic extremists.

The attack took place on the Coptic Christian Palm Sunday, when the church in the Nile Delta town of Tanta was packed with worshippers.

Ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed confirmed the toll from the attack in an interview with CBC TV.

The state-run MENA news agency provided the same death toll and said 35 were wounded.

‘Australia at risk of invasion from China’ says doomsday theorist

Australia is at risk of invasion from China’s growing military might and other foreign superpowers, a doomsday theorist has warned.

Former U.S. Army Intelligence officer James Wesley, Rawles, who has a comma in his name, believes the land down under is vulnerable because of its isolation.

The self-proclaimed ‘Survivalist’ believes the world could plunge be into meltdown from an over-dependency on technology.

And in the event of apocalypse, the Californian-based author is wagering Darwin is the safest bet for survival…

Supercar Will Davison has suspected lower back fracture following 12-car pile-up

Racing driver Will Davison has been discharged from hospital after sustaining a suspected lower back fracture in what organisers say was the biggest crash in V8 Supercars history at Symmons Plains in Tasmania.

The Tekno Racing driver copped a heavy hit in yesterday’s 12-car pile-up.

Race officials said the unprecedented crash caused about $2 million in damage.

Doctors said they suspected Davison had fractured his lower back and further scans would confirm or disprove that diagnosis.

His manager, David Segal, said the 34-year-old, who was in Launceston General Hospital, suffered belt trauma.

“While he is in reasonable spirits, he’s had a pretty tough night and he’s not feeling fabulous,” he said…

Davis Cup: Australia clinches tie, beating United States 3-1 as Nick Kyrgios downs Sam Querrey

Nick Kyrgios seals the deal, with his win over American Sam Querrey putting Australia into the Davis Cup semi-finals.

Kyrgios prevailed 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 6-4 in Sunday’s first reverses singles match, giving Australia an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the World Group quarter-final tie against the United States in Brisbane.

It is just the second time in the last 11 years Australia have made this stage of the competition, with a trip to Belgium or a home semi-final tie against Italy to come in September…

#F1 Hamilton leads from start to finish to secure win in #ChineseGP 🇨🇳 Thrilling Race

Lewis Hamilton, right on top of his game, returned to the summit of the drivers’ standings with victory in the Chinese Grand Prix.

He started on pole and commanded the 54-lap race on a drying track to beat Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel into second place. The two men lead the table two races into the 20-round season.

The anticipated rain-lashed shenanigans did not fully materialise – there was some skidding off and two safety cars, one virtual and one actual, but the rain drifted away before the race began even though the clouds hung grey and murky over the track.

It was a sure-footed performance in the Mercedes by Hamilton to give him a record-extending fifth win here. It was made easier by Vettel being stuck behind the other, and slower, Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen for a large chunk of the early-mid race.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished third from 16th on the grid. Both the Dutchman and Vettel pulled off excellent overtakes on their team-mates at turn six. Although Vettel finally passed Verstappen, the youngster added lustre to his standing by carving his way up the field.

Hamilton started on intermediate tyres, the road still being wet in the morning drizzle. The virtual safety car was deployed early on when Williams teenager Lance Stroll went into the gravel.

Then Sauber’s Antonio Giovinazzi crashed on the start straight – losing control on a wet patch. It was almost the same place as he spun out in qualifying the day before – that time he skidded on the green paint after running wide. He did little to suggest that he could be a permanent replacement for Pascal Wehrlein, who is slowly getting himself up to fitness after an accident in the Race of Champions back in January…

Drag racer escapes fiery crash unharmed at Perth Motorplex

DANIEL Miocevich is no stranger to the sport of drag racing.

His father Gary Miocevich was one of the men responsible for building Perth Motorplex.

Gary passed away in 2015 but perhaps on April 8, Gary’s birthday, he was looking out for his son.

Daniel has followed his father’s passion for jet-powered drag racing and was racing his jet dragster, named ‘Aftershock’ at the WA Drag Racing Grand Final.

Isis kills dozens of civilians caught fleeing Mosul – hang bodies up on electricity poles

mosul-iraq.jpgIsis has killed dozens of civilians attempting to flee the remaining parts of Mosul under its control, hanging their bodies from electricity poles as a gruesome warning to others. One man said he had found a relative’s mutilated body displaced in the Iraqi city’s Tenek district alongside three others who were caught trying to escape. “Their appearance was shocking,” he told Reuters. “We weren’t able to get them down and they have been there for two days.”

The punishment has previously been used for alleged “spies” and defectors across Isis territory, where mock crucifixions have become a common sight.

Another resident of the Old City’s Shahwan district said a family of six, including an elderly woman, had also been murdered by jihadis.

Indonesia: Jemaah Anshorut Daulah; 6  shot dead in East Java

POLICE and military officers shot dead six suspected members of an Islamic militant group in Indonesia, after a failed drive-by shooting targeting police officers in East Java.

Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population and has been on high alert over a recent resurgence in radicalism inspired by the extremist group Islamic State.

After a police chase the six abandoned their vehicle in a village in the Tuban area, not far from the industrial city of Surabaya, and attempted to flee into a plantation where they were all killed in a second gunbattle with police, East Java Police spokesman Frans Barung Mangera said on Saturday.

Police were monitoring the vehicle prior to the attack, he said, in connection with the Friday arrest of three suspected members of the group, Jemaah Anshorut Daulah (JAD), who were allegedly planning an attack on a police station and had bought M16 machine guns from the southern Philippines.

“We tried to stop that vehicle, but the vehicle did not stop,” Mangera said, adding that those in the vehicle “took out weapons and shot at officers”.

Indonesia has had some major successes tackling militancy inspired by al-Qaeda’s attacks on the United States in 2001. But there has been a resurgence of Islamist activity in recent years, some of it linked to the rise of Islamic State.

Tim Pigott-Smith dead: British actor dies, aged 70

tim-pigott-smith.jpgBritish actor Tim Pigott-Smith has died at the age of 70, his agent has said. The stage and screen star, who appeared in blockbusters including Quantum of Solace and Alice in Wonderland, was perhaps best known for his role in the 1984 mini series The Jewel in the Crown. He performed both in the West End and Broadway and received an OBE for services to drama last month.

A statement from agent John Grant said: “It is with deep regret that I have to announce the sad news that Tim Pigott-Smith died this morning.

“Tim was one of the great actors of his generation. Much-loved and admired by his peers, he will be remembered by many as a gentleman and a true friend.

“He will be much missed. We ask that you respect the privacy of his wife, the actress Pamela Miles, his son Tom and the family.”

With a career spanning almost 50 years, his first TV role came in the 1971 TV movie Boswell’s Life of Johnson.

He played roles in early series of Doctor Who, and appeared in recent dramas including Downton Abbey and Silent Witness.
