#F1 #BelgianGP FP2 REPORT: Lewis Hamilton fastest in FP2 before Spa wash-out

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium — Lewis Hamilton edged Kimi Raikkonen by 0.262s to top Friday’s afternoon practice session, which saw the top five drivers covered by 0.5s.Hamilton set a 1:44.753 to lead the session and swap positions with Raikkonen, who had beaten him to the fastest time in FP1. Mercedes is favoured this weekend due to the power-sensitive nature of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit but Ferrari will be encouraged by the gap to Hamilton from the afternoon’s qualifying simulations. The session was hit by a deluge of rain just after the completion of the qualifying simulations, which could be a sign of things to come with rain forecast for Sunday afternoon. With the prospect of rain mixing up proceedings for the grand prix, teams spent a long time working with the ultra-soft tyre to prepare the possibility of a quick stint in the dry.More to follow…

Exclusive: Indonesian militants planned ‘DIRTY BOMB’ attack – sources

JAKARTA (Reuters) – Indonesian militants planned to detonate a radioactive dirty bomb, security sources said, highlighting the rising ambitions of extremists to wreak destruction in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation.

But experts cast doubt on their expertise, equipment and chances of success.

The plot was foiled when police raided homes and arrested five suspects in Bandung, West Java, last week, the sources with direct knowledge of the plot said. After the raids, police spoke of a plan to explode a “chemical” bomb but provided no other details.

The plot comes as Indonesia grapples with an influx of militants deported from other countries and the fallout from the Islamic State-led siege in the southern Philippines city of Marawi that regional leaders and analysts worry has energized militants across Southeast Asia

The three counter-terrorism sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the militants had hoped to transform low-grade radioactive Thorium 232 (Th-232) into deadly Uranium 233 (U-233).

The highly radioactive uranium would be combined with the powerful home-made explosive triacetone triperoxide (TATP) to create a “nuclear bomb”, according to an instruction manual used by the militants and reviewed by Reuters.

In fact, the device would be, at best, a radiological dispersal device or dirty bomb that could spray radioactive material when the conventional bomb exploded.

A spokesman for Indonesia’s national police, Inspector General Setyo Wasisto, declined to confirm or deny the plot to construct the device, but said it would have been more potent than the two bombs made from TATP that killed three police in Indonesia’s capital Jakarta in May.

“If this bomb was finished, it would have had a more destructive impact than the bomb made from ’Mother of Satan’,” he said, using the nickname for TATP…

The Funniest Reactions to the Katy Perry Swish Swish Video

Can you find all the famous (and internet-famous) faces?

For her new music video for the basketball-themed single “Swish Swish,” Katy Perry went all-out to collect an oddball group of guest stars that span the reaches of fame, from internet-viral superstars to a Game of Thrones actor and the comedy queen Molly Shannon.

The Space Jam-inspired video dropped Thursday, marketed as a battle between the inept “Tigers” and the “Sheep.” In the game-time set-up, Perry and her squad — Stranger Things’ Gaten Matarazzo, Jenna Ushkowitz from Glee, the virally-dubbed “Backpack Kid” who stole the show at Saturday Night Live and more — face off against Game of Thrones actor Hafþór Júlíus “Thor” Björnsson , who plays the inimitable Mountain on the HBO show. Also spotted in the crowd: competitive eater Joey Chestnut, Rob Gronkowski of the Patriots and internet-famous Doug the Pug, among others.

Thanks to a halftime show from Nicki Minaj, Perry and her teammates manage to pull it together for the second half. As with much of Perry’s persona and Witness videos, “Swish Swish” ends in a frenzy of goofy antics and slapstick comedy. The whole six-minute film is stuffed with Easter egg details and meme-worthy moments.

The video was directed by Dave Meyers, who was also behind the highly-nominated video for Kendrick Lamar’s “HUMBLE.” This is definitely a different vibe — and online reaction was mixed.

Perry will next be taking to the stage as host of MTV’s Video Music Awards this Sunday before kicking off her Witness world tour this fall.

Cheerleaders forced to do the splits in disturbing video, Denver coach + principal placed on leave

A series of videos emerge showing high school cheerleaders in the US screaming in pain while being pushed into splits during practice.

It has prompted a coach and his assistant, a principal, an assistant principal and a district attorney to all be placed on leave as Colorado police open an investigation.

The videos show eight cheerleaders at Denver’s East High School being forced into splits while their arms are held by teammates, with a girl in one video repeatedly asking her coach to stop.

“No no no, I can’t! I can’t! Please stop, please stop, please stop,” the trainee says.

The footage was aired by local TV station KUSA-TV, which said the videos were shot on mobile phones of two team members and sent anonymously to the broadcaster.

Denver Public Schools superintendent Tom Boasberg called the videos “extremely distressing”.

“We absolutely prohibit any practices that place our students’ physical and mental health in jeopardy,” Mr Boasberg said in a statement.

“We do not and will not allow any situation in which a student is forced to perform an activity or exercise beyond the point at which they express their desire to stop.”

The Denver Police Department said child-abuse detectives were investigating.

Same-sex marriage: 90,000 people added to electoral role ahead of postal survey

An extra 90,000 Australians have added their names to the electoral roll since the announcement of the postal survey on legalising same-sex marriage.

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has released the data after Thursday evening’s deadline for voters to update their details ahead of the optional ballot.

The AEC received 765,000 requests from eligible voters to either join the electoral roll or update their details to ensure postal ballot papers arrived at the right address.

Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers suggested it was a significant result, because there was a “trend throughout recent electoral cycles for enrolment rates to dip mid-cycle”.

In comparison, the AEC processed over 687,000 enrolment transactions — voters either updating details or joining the electoral roll — with about 132,000 of those enrolling to vote before the 2016 federal election.

Despite its job in managing the electoral roll, the AEC will not be managing the postal survey…

Former Thai minister jailed for 42 years for falsifying rice deals with China

BANGKOK (Reuters) – A Bangkok court sentenced a former Thai commerce minister to 42 years in jail on Friday after finding him guilty of falsifying government-to-government rice deals between Thailand and China.

The verdict in the case against Boonsong Teriyapirom comes hours after former Thai prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra failed to show up at the Supreme Court for the verdict in a negligence case brought against her over the same rice scheme which her government introduced in 2011.

Sources close to Yingluck, who was ousted by a military coup in 2014, said on Friday that the former prime minister had fled Thailand. The Supreme Court on Friday issued an arrest warrant for Yingluck.

“Boonsong is sentenced to 42 years in prison,” a judge said, handing down the verdict.

Thailand’s anti-graft commission said the deals announced by Boonsong had caused “huge losses” to the state and that rice was sold locally and not exported, as claimed by Yingluck’s government.

Former Thai PM Yingluck Shinawatra has ‘fled country’ ahead of trial verdict

Bangkok, Thailand (CNN)Thailand’s former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has fled the country as a court was about to deliver a verdict in a two-year trial over agricultural subsidies, a source close to her family says.

The source declined to say where she had gone, but Thailand’s top immigration official said there were no records of Yingluck having left through proper channels.
Yingluck failed to show up to hear the verdict being delivered. Her lawyer said she was ill but the court rejected the explanation and Thailand’s Supreme Court issued an arrest warrant.
The lawyer, Norawit Larleang, told CNN that he didn’t know whether the former prime minister was in Thailand or had left.
Yingluck — ousted by a military coup in 2014 — had been barred from leaving Thailand without court approval since 2015, when her trial started.
Her bail of 30 million baht ($900,000), posted when the trial began more than two years ago, has been confiscated.
Yingluck faced up to 10 years in prison for alleged negligence over a rice-buying scheme, which cost the country billions of dollars. The court has set a new date for the verdict of September 27.

Life sentences for ‘Patrick Slater slayers’

A VIOLENT mob of young men who murdered Patrick Slater in the hours after Australia Day last year in a brutal revenge attack have been jailed.

Mr Slater’s final moments were spent running from eight armed males aged between 11 and 29 at a city train station in the early hours of the morning.

The 26-year-old victim was killed when the group caught up with him and attacked him in a dark alcove.

Six young men dubbed by prosecutors as the “Patrick Slater slayers” were found guilty of murder after a Supreme Court trial earlier this year.

Christopher Birdsall, Dylan Anthony, Robert Pickett and brothers Stefan and Clinton Mead were today sentenced to life behind bars with minimums of between 16 and 18 years.

An 18-year-old, who can not be named because he was a juvenile at the time, will spend 12 years behind bars over the murder.

A 16-year-old boy spent three days on trial for murder with the other men before pleading guilty to manslaughter.

He re-joined his co-accused in the dock today and was sentenced to 4.5 years detention.

Supreme Court Justice Peter Martino said the males were motivated by revenge when they attacked Mr Slater.

He said Mr Slater had 23 external injuries, including a fatal stab wound, when the group walked away and left him dying on the floor.

“He died quickly after he was fatally stabbed,” Justice Martino said.

“None of them made any attempt to assist Mr Slater.”

#F1 Schumacher’s son, Mick, to drive demo laps at Belgian GP

Michael Schumacher’s son will mark the 25th anniversary of his father’s first Formula One win by driving demonstration laps ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday.

Mick Schumacher, who is 18, will drive a 1994 F1 model of the Benetton B194 that his father drove that year to the first of his record seven world championships. The German driver’s 91 wins and 68 pole positions are also records, although Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton can equal him if he tops qualifying on Saturday.

Michael won his first career race on the vast Spa-Francorchamps track nestled in the Ardennes forest in 1992. He also made his debut there the year before and has a special affinity with the track. He has a record six wins _ one more than another F1 great, the late Ayrton Senna.

Mick, meanwhile, is driving in the F3 championship, and is touted for a bright future.
