“Twin Peaks Season 3, Episode 9” is the most plot-heavy one in a while

Season 3, Episode 9

In the original run of “Twin Peaks,” Maj. Garland Briggs was a rare voice of optimism, in a show that usually depicted a world suffering from irreversible entropy. The Major’s son, Bobby, was a high-school delinquent who sold drugs, slept with a married woman and spent a long stretch of the series masterminding an ill-considered insurance scam. Yet in the Season 2 premiere, in one of the series’s most emotional moments, Garland moved his son to tears by describing a vision he had of his boy leading a happy, upstanding adult life. And sure enough, in “Twin Peaks: The Return” that dream seems pretty much fulfilled, with Bobby now serving as a trusted deputy in his town’s police department.

Of course, Major Briggs never saw any of this come to pass, because apparently for about 25 years he was stranded in another dimension, waiting to deliver a message he’d been guarding for decades: a set of coordinates, interrupted by the words “Cooper Cooper.” It was just Garland’s bad luck that when he finally received a visitor, it was a hapless paranormal dabbler (and, even worse, blogger) named William Hastings, whose trip with his secret lover, Ruth, to the place they called “the Zone” ended with Briggs’s headless body and Ruth’s disembodied head turning up in a shabby apartment in Buckhorn, S.D.

Episode 9 of “Twin Peaks: The Return” is unexpectedly Briggs-centric, and is the most plot-heavy episode in a while. After the trippy flashbacks of Episode 8 (and a week off for the holiday), this was a return to “normal” … inasmuch as that term ever applies to this show. The town of Twin Peaks played as big a role as it has all season, too, with Major Briggs’s linking the action in Washington to the multiple mysteries playing out a few states to the east…

Garbiñe Muguruza knocks No1 seed Angelique Kerber out of Wimbledon

The No1 seed Angelique Kerber is out of Wimbledon after defeat to Spain’s 14th seed Garbiñe Muguruza in the fourth round.

In a gripping clash on Court Two, Muguruza clinched a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory to set up a quarter-final against Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Kerber, who will lost her No1 status in the world rankings as a result of her exit, and Muguruza have a shared experience of being beaten in the Wimbledon final by Serena Williams. Muguruza lost to the American in the 2015 title match, and Kerber fell to Williams last year.

Romanian Simona Halep will become No1 in the world if she reaches the semi-final stage. Should Halep not advance so far, Karolina Pliskova will become the new rankings leader on Monday.

The French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko reached the quarter-finals for the first time with a dramatic victory on Monday. The Latvian was a 6-3 7-6 (8/6) winner against Ukrainian fourth seed Elina Svitolina, stumbling over the line after at one point having looked set to coast through.

Ostapenko, who turned 20 only two days before her Roland Garros triumph last month, needed eight match points to get over the line in her Court 12 tussle.

The 20-year-old will face Venus Williams in the last eight after the American ousted the No27 seed Ana Konjuh.

Trump’s behavior is the biggest threat to U.S. national security. CEO would have been replaced

Confusing civility with comity is a grave mistake in human or international relations. Yes, the Group of 20 summit issued a common communique after the leaders’ meeting. Some see this as an indication that some normality is being restored in international relations between the United States and other countries. The truth is that at no previous G-20 did the possibility occur to anyone that a common statement might not be agreed to by all participants.

Rather than considering agreement on a communique as an achievement, it is more honest and accurate to see its content as a confirmation of the breakdown of international order that many have feared since Donald Trump’s election. And the president’s behavior in and around the summit was unsettling to U.S. allies and confirmed the fears of those who believe that his conduct is currently the greatest threat to American national security.

The existence of the G-20 as an annual forum arose out of a common belief of major nations in a global community with common interests in peace, mutual security, prosperity and economic integration, and the containment of global threats, even as there was competition among nations in the security and economic realms. The idea that the United States should lead in the development of international community has been a central tenet of American foreign policy since the end of World War II. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the aspiration to international community has been an aspiration to global community…

Valtteri Bottas makes his case for title contention as Sebastian Vettel and Romain Grosjean impress while Daniel Ricciardo takes a double award…

The weekend Valtteri Bottas confirmed he is a genuine contender in this season’s title battle and made it a three-way race for the championship.

The Finn did enough to take pole on Saturday, without putting together the perfect lap, before executing an inch-perfect start and driving a near flawless race to take the second victory of his career.

As with his win in Russia in April, Bottas showed he can handle the pressure of being pursued by four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel as he held off the championship leader in the closing stages.

“You sense he knows this is his big chance and he’s not going to let this go easily,” said Sky F1’s Damon Hill.

Thirty-five points behind Vettel, 15 behind team-mate Lewis Hamilton, Bottas will have the multiple world champions looking closely over their shoulder over the remainder of the season.

And it will surely not be much longer before Mercedes put a new contract on the table…

#F1 Kimi Raikkonen a ‘laggard’ and must do more: Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne

Kimi Raikkonen has become a “laggard” and must do more for Ferrari, the team’s president Sergio Marchionne has said.

The Finn’s season continued to stutter in Sunday’s Austrian GP as he finished fifth, 20 seconds behind race-winner Valtteri Bottas, having started third on the grid.

While Sebastian Vettel leads the world championship, Raikkonen has rarely matched his team-mate’s pace in 2017 and is fifth in the standings, 88 points behind the German.

The 2007 world champion is out of contract at the end of the season and Marchionne said the 37-year-old was falling behind his rivals.

“I think Kimi has got to show a higher level of commitment to the process,” he said ahead of Sunday’s race.

Trump backtracks on cyber unit with Russia after harsh criticism

U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday backtracked on his push for a cyber security unit with Russia, tweeting that he did not think it could happen, hours after his proposal was harshly criticized by Republicans who said Moscow could not be trusted.

Trump said on Twitter early on Sunday that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed on Friday forming “an impenetrable Cyber Security unit” to address issues like the risk of cyber meddling in elections.

The idea appeared to be a political non-starter. It was immediately scorned by several of Trump’s fellow Republicans, who questioned why the United States would work with Russia after Moscow’s alleged meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.

“It’s not the dumbest idea I have ever heard but it’s pretty close,” Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina told NBC’s “Meet the Press” program.

Ash Carter, who was U.S. defense secretary until the end of former Democratic President Barack Obama’s administration in January, told CNN flatly: “This is like the guy who robbed your house proposing a working group on burglary.”

Trump’s advisers, including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, had recently sought to explain Trump’s cyber push.

Mnuchin said on Saturday that Trump and Putin had agreed to create “a cyber unit to make sure that there was absolutely no interference whatsoever, that they would work on cyber security together.”

But Trump returned to Twitter on Sunday to play down the idea, which arose at his talks with Putin at a summit of the Group of 20 nations in Hamburg, Germany.

Perth ballerina Lauren Perrett lands dream job dancing at Moulin Rouge in Paris

PERTH ballerina Lauren Perrett said she is “living the dream” as a dancer at the Moulin Rouge in Paris. But it hasn’t gone without its mishaps.

The 19-year-old, who has performed more the 100 shows at the coveted cabaret house in the past two months, has had a few stumbles.

She made a memorable entrance at her stage debut when she fell as she was about to tackle the can-can.

“It was so funny because I ran on stage first, and I just slid a few metres, got up and continued kicking but I couldn’t stop laughing,” she said. “Some audience members were laughing too.”

She has also fallen during the finale of her shows, admitting: “Because we wear huge pink feather backpacks and when you kick your leg, sometimes you fall back with it.”

Perrett, pictured, recently had quite a serious fall, but maintained her sense of humour.

US Wildfires: Thousands Flee. Children + counselors at a campground were trapped

Children and counselors at a California campground were temporarily trapped.

Wildfires barreled across the baking landscape of the western U.S. and Canada, destroying a smattering of homes, forcing thousands to flee and temporarily trapping children and counselors at a California campground.

Here’s a look at the wildfires blackening the West.

California

Two major wildfires in California have sent nearly 8,000 people fleeing to safety.

About 4,000 people evacuated and another 7,400 were told to prepare to leave their homes as fire swept through grassy foothills in the Sierra Nevada, about 60 miles north of Sacramento, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said Sunday.

The fire burned nearly 8 square miles (20 sq. kilometers), destroyed at least 10 structures and damaged critical infrastructure, leading Governor Jerry Brown to declare a state of emergency to provide assistance to local authorities.

Fire spokeswoman Mary Ann Aldrich said additional homes were destroyed overnight. An inspection team is trying to determine the extent of the damage.

The area burning was about 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of Oroville, where spillways in the nation’s tallest dam began crumbling from heavy rains this winter and led to temporary evacuation orders for 200,000 residents downstream…

ISIS: Iraqi military’s victory over militants in Mosul a key win for Obama strategy

THE Iraqi military’s hard-fought victory over the Islamic State group in Mosul marks a defining moment not just for them. It is also a key win for the US doctrine behind it.

Instead of putting large numbers of American boots on the ground, the US-led strategy in Iraq and Syria has been a non-stop air campaign combined with continual training and advising for proxy local forces.

Pentagon officials say the outcome is clear — three years after collapsing as flag-waving jihadists swept across their country, Iraq’s security forces have become a battle-hardened army that prevailed in a brutal urban fight.

“Training works,” said one senior US military officer who was deployed to Iraq from 2015-’16. It “has enabled the Iraqis to take back their country.” It’s a far cry from when then-Pentagon chief Ashton Carter said in May 2015 that the Iraqi military “showed no will to fight.” When IS attacked in 2014, the Iraqi security forces had grown weak under then-prime minister Nouri al-Maliki.

They have confirmed on their Facebook page:

“Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters and officers have been called to a fire in Camden Lock Market.
