Tourist Tells Of How He Comforted Dying Boy On Las Ramblas

‘I had to go to that child. I was not going to leave that child.’

A British tourist caught up in the terror attack on Las Ramblas last Thursday has described how he comforted a dying boy as Barcelona police shouted at him to flee the carnage.

Harry Athwal was inside a restaurant when he saw a white van speed down the tourist strip, sending pedestrians “flying into the air”.

I knew what I had to do. I had to go to that child, I was not going to leave that child.”

The Brit told ITV’s Good Morning Britain that the street was strewn with bodies, but right in the middle there was a young boy, obviously badly injured.

“As soon as I saw that child I knew what I had to do, I had to go to that child, I was not going to leave that child,” he said.

“I checked for a pulse. He didn’t have a pulse. I put my hand on his back and he wasn’t breathing. All I could do then was just sit with that child.

“He had long hair. I just stroked his hair to see if I could comfort him.”

Athwal says the boy appeared to be about seven or eight years old — the same age as his own son.

It is also roughly the same age as seven-year-old Australian boy Julian Cadman, who has been named as one of the victims of the terror attack, but it has not been confirmed whether he was the boy Athwal comforted.

Under Armour CEO resigns fromTrump’s council in the wake of Charlottesville response

While other CEOs have condemned racism after the weekend’s white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, only two had left the council as of Monday night.

President Trump’s initial failure to condemn white supremacy on Saturday was too much for Kenneth Frazier.

Early Monday morning, the head of the pharma giant Merck — and one of America’s most prominent black CEOs — abruptly quit Trump’s manufacturing council.

Frazier’s message was clear: “America’s leaders must honor our fundamental values by clearly rejecting expressions of hatred, bigotry and group supremacy.”

Trump quickly responded by bashing Frazier. He tweeted that the Merck CEO “will have more time to LOWER RIPOFF DRUG PRICES!”

Hours later, Trump denounced the KKK, neo-Nazis and White supremacists as “repugnant.”

Throughout the day, other CEOs on the manufacturing council condemned racism after the weekend’s white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. But by Monday night, only one other had joined Frazier in leaving.

Under Armour’s Kevin Plank had earlier tweeted a strong rejection of racism. Then, just after 8 p.m. ET, his company released a statement saying that he would step down.

“Under Armour engages in innovation and sports, not politics,” Plank said.

Justine Damond: Police officer who Killed Australian has broken his silence

THE heartbroken husband-to-be of killed Australian woman Justine Ruszczyk Damond has made an emotional statement about the loss of his fiancee, saying his family is “utterly devastated”.

Don Damond, 50, made the statement outside his Minneapolis home where his fiancee, 40, was gunned down by a local police officer on Saturday night after calling 911 for help.

Mr Damond’s first public comments come as the officer who shot Ms Damond has also broken his silence, and audio captured by Minneapolis emergency dispatch files reveal how quickly the shooting happened.

The Sydney woman’s grieving partner revealed she had called 911 on Saturday when she heard noise in the alley behind the family home.

“Our hearts are broken and we utterly devastated by the loss of Justine,” he said.

“As you know, it was Justine who called 911 on Saturday evening, reporting what she believed was an active sexual assault occurring nearby.”

Mr Damond was damning of police officers, saying the family have been provided with “almost no additional information from law enforcement regarding what happened after police arrived”.

“We’ve lost the dearest of people and we’re desperate for information,” he said.

“Piecing together Justine’s last moments before the homicide would be a small comforts as we grieve this tragedy.”

Martin Landau, star of Ed Wood and Crimes and Misdemeanors, dies at 89

Martin Landau, the actor whose gaunt, hangdog features graced films by film-makers as varied as Alfred Hitchcock, Woody Allen and Tim Burton has died. He was 89, and his death was confirmed by his publicist “following a short hospitalisation”.

Arguably Landau’s career high point arrived in 1995, when he won the best supporting actor Oscar for his role as Bela Lugosi in Ed Wood, the Burton-directed biopic of the infamous director of Plan 9 From Outer Space and other notorious films. In Lugosi, the washed-up former star of 1930s horror films such as Count Dracula, Landau found a forerunner he could relate to. “Lugosi … had a palpable intensity and a presence that you can’t buy,” Landau said, just prior to his Oscar win. “But this fuckin’ town shat on him … And I can relate to that. I’ve seen it happen a lot. I’ve seen it happen to me.”

The Hollywood coronation crowned a comeback that decades earlier might have seemed implausible. Born in Brooklyn, NY to a family of Jewish immigrants in 1928, he joined the New York Daily News as a cartoonist as a 17-year-old. Five years later he left to study as an actor, auditioning for the celebrated Actors Studio run by Lee Strasberg in 1955 and becoming one of only two actors accepted; the other was Steve McQueen.

Finsbury Park panic as people injured after van ploughs into Muslim worshippers

SEVERAL people have been injured after a van ploughed into Muslim worshippers leaving a mosque at Finsbury Park after Ramadan prayers tonight. Police confirmed a “number of casualties” …

Witnesses described seeing a white hire van careering along the pavement before running people over who had just finished prayers.

Mohammed Kozbar, chairman of Finsbury Park mosque, told The Sun last night: “Whoever did this, he did it to hurt people and it’s a terrorist attack.

“We call it a terrorist attack as we called it in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge…

“The van drove over people who were leaving late prayers. They were gathering in Seven Sisters Road.
“I heard there are fatalities but I don’t want to jump to conclusions.
“My concern now is the casualties who have been affected.”
Armed police were scrambled to the scene as casualties were pictured strewn across the road and pavement.

Eyewitnesses told LBC radio that the van approached “slowly and intentionally accelerated into crowded cafe outside a mosque”.
Dramatic video footage shared online showed a white male – believed to be the driver – being held by police shortly after 1am.

Witness Cynthia Vanzella told Sky News: “I was trying to sleep when I heard a lot of noise outside.
“I saw many people shouting, taking over half of Seven Sisters Road, I thought that something bad has happened.”

18 Crown employees charged in China

Crown Resorts says all 18 of its employees who have been detained in China have now been formally charged with illegally promoting gambling.

All 18 detained Crown employees in China have now been charged with offences related to the promotion of gambling, the Australian casino operator announced today.

The cases of all its employees have now been referred to Shanghai’s Baoshan District Court, after the workers were taken into custody by Chinese authorities beginning on October 13.

In a statement on Tuesday, Crown said that with the matter now before the court it would not be making further comment.

A source said: “Police were acting on intelligence received.

“It’s been such a quick turn around since then.

“The arrests relate to what police believe was an imminent terror plot.”

Portugal has taken out the coveted title of Eurovision winner for 2017 after receiving a record breaking score.

In a close second was Bulgaria with the song ‘Beautiful Mess’.

Salvador Sobral performed Amar Pelos Dois (Love For Both) at the grand final in Kiev, Ukraine. The song was written by his sister Luisa Sobral.

This is the first time Portugal has won the song contest, and it has been 53 years since they made it to the top five.

They won by a score of 758 points with each country awarding two sets of 12, 10, eight to one points to their 10 favourite songs.

Bride/Groom, eight people injured after second-storey balcony collapses during a pre-wedding party

Pre-wedding drinks ended with a night in hospital after a balcony collapsed in Yamba on the NSW North Coast. The bride and groom were injured when the structure fell suddenly.

A 60-year old man has to be airlifted to Lismore hospital but is now in a stable condition.

Two woman aged 44 and 58 were taken to Grafton hospital and a 61-year old man was taken to Maclean hospital – but has been discharged.

A man involved in the accident heard a ‘weird noise’ ten minutes before the balcony collapsed, the Daily Examiner reported.

The man said when everyone moved at once when ‘it started sprinkling’ the structure crashed to the ground.

‘All they did was just move to that particular spot and just collapsed. They just moved, they just dropped,’ he said.

The balcony was not over crowded, according to one of the party guests

Trump’s White House Family Looks Like The Most Corrupt Nations In The World

For decades, the United States has worked with other countries to eliminate nepotism. There’s a good reason for that: Nepotism breeds corruption.

“You’ve seen it in countries all over the world where they’ve appointed family members, whether it’s their son, daughter, in-laws — it provides for tremendous opportunities for corruption,” said Shruti Shah, an international anti-corruption expert at Coalition for Integrity, a good-government nonprofit. “People who want to curry favor find their way to provide favors to family members as a way to get closer to the person in power.”

But President Donald Trump, who has entrusted more power to his family members than any recent president, puts that agenda at risk. “I like nepotism,” Trump told Larry King in 2006, the year he replaced his “Apprentice” costar, Trump company executive Carolyn Kepcher, with his daughter Ivanka Trump.

Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, hold broad portfolios at the White House that include everything from diplomacy with China, the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, women’s issues, cybersecurity and reinventing government.

They determine who else has power in the Trump administration. Trump sidelined Steve Bannon, a close adviser, after he butted up against his daughter and adviser-in-law, and he elevated former Goldman Sachs employees Gary Cohn and Dina Powell based in part on their friendly relationships with Ivanka and her husband. And the couple act as presidential emissaries, with Kushner traveling to Iraq at the suggestion of the Pentagon and Ivanka heading to Germany.

Ivanka and Kushner — the two Trump advisers least likely to be fired — now rule the White House. And, although Ivanka and Kushner are not being paid, they maintain ownership stakes in their own businesses. Ivanka owns her own personal brand, which produces shoes, clothing, jewelry and accessories, and has a stake in her father’s businesses, including the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C. Kushner, like Trump, is a real estate magnate with numerous holdings throughout the U.S. who inherited his wealth from his father.

The nepotism in the Trump administration would seem familiar in foreign countries with high rates of corruption, according to U.S. diplomats who have served in them.

“For many countries and governments, certainly in the Gulf, in the Middle East, they would recognize this pattern immediately,” Gerald Feierstein, who served as ambassador to Yemen from 2010 to 2013 and worked as a deputy secretary of state in the Obama administration, told HuffPost. “I think that they would find it completely normal that leaders mix personal business interests with government affairs and would use family members in various official responsibilities.”

‘Safe-sex fatigue’: dramatic rise in STI rates in WA

A DRAMATIC rise in rates of sexually transmitted infections in WA is being blamed on condoms not being used, particularly among young heterosexual couples.

There have been steadily high numbers of people with chlamydia for a number of years, with 11,831 cases reported in 2016 and 3276 cases reported so far this year.

“We have been promoting safe sex for many years and I think there is an element of safe-sex fatigue or condom fatigue,” Lisa Bastian, manager of the sexual health and bloodborne virus program at the Department of Health, said.

“People need to see STIs as relevant to their lifestyle and they have to feel at risk of STIs to be concerned about using condoms.”

Ms Bastian said the rate of infection in the community showed little sign of slowing.

“Of note is that the increase seems to be accelerating. In 2016, gonorrhoea notifications were up 49 per cent,” she said.

Ms Bastian said of particular concern was the rate of gonorrhoea among young heterosexual women, which jumped 77 per cent last year…
