The compounds halt the virus, which causes birth defects, and stop it replicating without damage to host mammalian cells, QUT scientists say.
“The research is in the early stages, but we are aiming to ultimately synthesise the compounds in question and turn our attention to preclinical testing,” lead researcher Dr Trudi Collet said in a statement.
She didn’t name the plant, presumably for commercial reasons, but said it was fairly common, and its compounds were found to kill 100 per cent of the Zika infection in cells.
“It’s also exciting because of the implications of this work for other viruses. Zika, dengue, West Nile, Japanese encephalitis and yellow fever are all from the same family of viruses – flaviviridae.”

The former NSW minister once dubbed ‘Eddie Obeid’s left testicle’ will join his old political ally behind bars after being convicted for wilful misconduct in public office.
Ian Macdonald is the second ALP heavyweight to fall following extensive investigations by the Independent Commission Against Corruption.
The 68-year-old was sentenced in the NSW Supreme Court to up to 10 years’ jail on Friday after a jury found him guilty of two counts of misconduct in public office.
He will be eligible for parole in May 2024.
Macdonald was convicted over a lucrative coal exploration licence he granted ‘without any reasonable cause or justification’ to Doyles Creek Mining when mineral resources minister in 2008.

The South Sudanese government says 15 young children have died as a result of a botched measles vaccination campaign.
All of the children who died were under the age of five, said the health ministry, which blamed the deaths on human error.
One syringe was used for all the children over four days, it said, and the vaccine was not stored properly – with children as young as 12 years old administering injections.

A contractor doing maintenance work at a British Airways data center inadvertently switched off the power supply, knocking out the airline’s computer systems and leaving 75,000 people stranded last weekend, the Times newspaper reported on Friday.
Quoting a BA source, the newspaper said the power supply unit that sparked the I.T. failure was working perfectly but was accidentally shut down by a worker. An investigation into the power outage is likely to focus on human error rather than any equipment failure, it said…

Trump’s administration has asked the US supreme court to allow his ban on travelers from six Muslim-majority nations to come into effect after it was blocked by lower courts that deemed it discriminatory.
The administration filed two emergency applications with the nine justices seeking to block two different lower court rulings that went against Trump’s 6 March order barring entry for people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen for 90 days while the US government implements stricter visa screening.
On May 25 the 4th US circuit court of appeals in Richmond, Virginia upheld a Maryland judge’s ruling blocking the order. The administration also filed a separate appeal in that case.

THERE was traffic chaos along Roe Highway this morning after a car fire forced the closure of the left lane.
Emergency services received a call at 8.22am Friday that a car bonnet was on fire along the arterial route after Orrong Road, East Cannington.
Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire by 8.46am.
Dramatic footage of the vehicle fire sent to PerthNow shows how quickly the car went up in flames.
Traffic was diverted off the Orrong Road off-ramp.

Police have praised the quick actions of a truck driver who prevented what could have been a “catastrophic” collision with a school bus in Sydney, with moves now underway to charge the bus driver.
Frightening footage released by police shows the bus – carrying 15 students – pulling onto the M5 into the path of the semi-trailer after 7.30am on Thursday.
The truck driver jumped on the brakes with his semi jackknifing and skidding to a halt in a plume of white smoke. The bus continued down the motorway.
“I have no doubt the truck driver’s actions have prevented what could have been a catastrophic motor-vehicle accident,” Detective Inspector Dean Johnstone told AAP on Friday.
