AGL has released details for a gas-fired power plant in New South Wales, as part of its plans to replace the aging Lidell coal-fired station and move towards cleaner energy.
The company said it was investing up to $400 million in the 252-megawatt facility to be built near Newcastle and be completed during 2022.
Its announcement to the Australian stock Exchange follows pressure from the Federal Government to sell the Lidell coal-fired station in the New South Wales Hunter Valley, so it could stay open beyond its planned closure in 2022.

China launches first new aircraft carrier built at home
CHINA launched its first aircraft carrier built entirely on its own on Wednesday, in a demonstration of the growing technical sophistication of its defence industries and determination to safeguard its maritime territorial claims and crucial trade routes.
The 50,000-ton carrier left its berth just after 9am in the northern port city of Dalian, where its predecessor, the Ukrainian-built Liaoning, also underwent extensive refurbishing before being commissioned in 2012, the Ministry of National Defense said.
The new carrier is expected to be formally commissioned sometime before 2020 following the completion of sea trials and the arrival of its full air complement.
Like the 60,000-ton Liaoning, the new carrier is based on the former Soviet Union’s Kuznetsov class design, with a ski jump-style deck for taking off and a conventional oil-fuelled steam turbine power plant.
That limits the weight of payloads its planes can carry, its speed and the amount of time it can spend at sea relative to American nuclear-powered carriers.
China is believed to be planning to build at least two and possibly as many as four additional carriers, with one of them, the Type 002, reported to be already under construction at a shipyard outside Shanghai.

They are expected to be closer in size to the U.S. Navy’s nuclear-powered 100,000-ton Nimitz class ships, with flat flight decks and catapults to allow planes to launch with more bombs and fuel aboard.
According to Chinese reports, the new carrier will carry 24 Shenyang J-15 fighters, based on the Russian Sukhoi Su-33, along with 12 helicopters for anti-submarine warfare, airborne early warning and rescue operations. That compares to 85-90 fixed wing aircraft and helicopters carried by a Nimitz-class carrier.
The new carrier is part of an ambitious expansion of the Chinese navy, which is projected to have a total of 265-273 warships, submarines and logistics vessels by 2020, according to the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Naval Analysis.
That compares with 275 deployable battle force ships presently in the U.S. Navy, China’s primary rival in the Asia Pacific.

Officer who filmed Don Dale gassing says it was last straw
The images of teenagers being tear-gassed at a youth detention centre in Darwin have been seen around Australia but the man behind the camera that day has remained silent until now.
Senior youth justice officer Ian Johns has spoken out for the first time about the incident in August 2014 and the impact on his life.
“I don’t believe tear gas should have been used,” he said.
“I still can’t understand why, because we had the Tactical Response Group there from the big prison.
“I thought they might have smashed the door and gone in.”
In an exclusive interview with the ABC, he said he wished he had pushed harder to get permission to try to de-escalate the situation.
“I could have tried, and there was a couple of other officers that could have tried. We weren’t given the opportunity,” Mr Johns said.
He knew six boys had been in isolation for days after escaping from the Don Dale detention centre.
One of those boys was Dylan Voller, whose image of being strapped to a chair and hooded triggered a royal commission.
That afternoon Mr Voller had told him they had just been threatened with another 72 hours.
“All of us worry about kids being isolated in a place like that, for a long period of time, we all think it’s ridiculous,” Mr Johns said.
“But that was upper management’s decision.”
It was another practice he had opposed.
For 12 years, Mr Johns has worked at Don Dale, building rapport and trust with the detainees.
Being asked to film the tear-gassing was the last straw.
Mr Johns was ordered onto weeks of stress leave by his doctor, feeling bypassed and that his arguments for verbal de-escalation were being ignored.

Sydney/ Melbourne weather: Winter blast ends endless summer | Sun still shining in WA
Australia’s endless summer is OVER: Frost, plunging temperatures and high winds hit Sydney and Melbourne
Frosty morning temperatures are expected over Victoria and New South Wales on Thursday after a major cold front crosses the southeast parts of Australia.
Clear skies and cold air in the system’s wake are likely to lead to the first of the season for non-alpine areas, Weatherzone reports.
It will be the coldest morning so far this year for southeast Australia and potentially the coldest April morning for two years for most of NSW.
Early morning temperatures below 10C have been forecast for at least some towns in both states, while many places across NSW are likely to see temperatures close to zero.
Sydney and Melbourne will see lows of 10C on both Thursday and Friday this week, with the weather not set to be much better as the weekend rolls around.
The Bureau of Meteorology said temperatures dropped to around 9 to 10C in Melbourne this morning as the city dealt with a winter blast and rain that caused the closure of two train stations due to flooding.
‘So far today, we have had a top temperature of 14.5C, it’s the coldest day of the year so far and there’s been quite a lot of rainfall,’ senior forecaster Scott Williams told Daily Mail Australia.
‘In the last 48 hours, the city has had 42mm of rain and other parts of Victoria have had up to 70mm.
‘So a lot of rainfall and very gusty winds around the metropolitan area of up to about 70km/h, which makes it feels a lot cooler. It feels like 9 degrees.’
Mr Williams said the weather in Melbourne will remain cold for the next few days.
‘It will stay cold tomorrow, it will be cold and cloudy, around 15 degrees. We are in for a pretty extended spell of cooler weather.’
Hail and rain hit Melbourne during peak hour on Wednesday with a thunderstorm moving across the CBD.

Sydney firefighters free boy from toy vending machine
Not much can come between a child and their favourite toy.
But this three-year-old took things to a whole new level, getting himself stuck inside a soft toy vending machine.
The boy had to be rescued by firefighters after wiggling his way inside the claw machine and becoming trapped.
Despite the claustrophobic experience, firefighters said the boy was having ‘the time of his life’ inside and appeared to be in no rush to get back out.
The boy’s family were having a drink at The Australian Hotel and Brewery at Rouse Hill in Sydney’s west on Anzac Day when he clambered into the skill tester machine.
The boy’s mother called in firefighters after it became clear the boy – who remained calm throughout the ordeal – could not work out how to get back out.
Captain David Richards of 083 Riverstone Fire and Rescue told the Daily Telegraph that the boy said he ‘felt good’ and happily took a drink of cold water from rescuers as he waited to be freed.
‘When we arrived, we found the boy had crawled through the hole in the machine but was enjoying himself, playing with the toys. He was not distressed,’ Captain Richards said.
‘We then used our rapid intervention kit which has door-busting tools to break open the door to the vending machine to take him out.
‘This is the first time we have rescued someone from a vending machine though we had done rescues on someone’s hand stuck inside.’

WOMAN to hospital with serious injuries. Sandwiched between 2 cars in Perth
A WOMAN in her 20s has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries after she was sandwiched between two cars while inspecting damage from an earlier crash in Bassendean.
The woman suffered multiple fractures to her legs and arm in the incident which happened on Hardy Street just before 8am.
It is believed she had been involved in a minor bingle with a tradies’ ute and was inspecting the damage at the rear of the 60 year old’s vehicle when a green Ford smashed into them.
The man in his 60s was taken to hospital with cuts and bruises while the female driver of the Ford was also treated for minor injuries.
Major Crash investigators examined the scene this morning but are yet to say what caused the crash.
They are still speaking to the drivers involved and other witnesses.
It is believed morning sunlight might have contributed to the crash by obscuring the drivers vision.
Anyone who saw the crash is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online at http://ift.tt/1bQZeZd.

Phil ‘Gus’ Gould: Suggests girls don’t like footy, taking a dig at female fans.
CHANNEL Nine commentator and Panthers General Manager Phil Gould has caused a social media storm after taking a dig at female fans.
Gould made the comments during a telecast of the Anzac Day clash thriller between the Roosters and the Dragons at Allianz Stadium.
At around the 35th minute mark of the game, Nine’s coverage panned to two women deep in conversation and laughing while a group of men around them were shielding their eyes from the sun trying to watch the match.
Reacting to the vision of the women not paying attention to the on-field action, Gould suggested that they had no interest in rugby league.
“The girls aren’t watching the footy, they don’t care. They’re talking about other things,” he said during the Channel 9 commentary.
The comments hit a chord with league supporters on social media almost instantly and in particular with female fans of the game.
Popular Twitter account, Ladies Who League, who aim to give women in rugby league a voice, was quick to criticise the Panthers supremo.
“Women don’t care about the footy, Gus? RT if you are a woman who loves her footy.” – To which users responded with almost 160 retweets by 9pm on Tuesday night.
It is understood the NRL is disappointed with Gould’s comment during the Channel Nine coverage.
A spokesman for the NRL said women make up the fastest growing sector of the Rugby League community.
“More women are watching, more women are playing and you only have to go to a game to seem women and girls are becoming our most fanatical fans,” the spokesman said.
“They love the game – and we are doing all we can to convert even more women into Rugby League supporters.”
Channel Nine last night declined to comment on Gould’s comments or respond to the social media reaction.
Other fans were also quick to express their disapproval and disappointment with the influential figure’s comments…
Exercise pill to build muscle AND boost heart health without moving at all
We are one step closer to an ‘exercise pill’, scientists claim as new research reveals how to build muscle mass simply by altering a protein in the body.
The study, conducted in mice, showed that suppressing production of the protein myostatin enhances muscles – and boosts heart and kidney health.
It is an exciting announcement for those who dread the gym.
But scientists also point out that it could be a major development in treating obese people, since studies suggest their bodies overproduce myostatin, making it harder to see results from exercise.
The researchers zeroed in on myostatin because it is known as a powerful inhibitor of skeletal muscle growth.
It means that people with more myostatin have less muscle mass, and people with less myostatin have more muscle mass.
Study leader Dr Joshua Butcher, a postdoctoral fellow at the Vascular Biology Center at Augusta University in Georgia, said: ‘Given that exercise is one of the most effective interventions for obesity, this creates a cycle by which a person becomes trapped in obesity.’
Obesity is linked with several factors that increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, insulin resistance and kidney damage.
The researchers bred four groups of mice: lean and obese mice with uninhibited myostatin production and lean and obese mice that were unable to produce myostatin.
As expected, mice that were unable to produce myostatin developed markedly higher muscle mass, though the obese mice remained obese even with more muscle.
The obese mice that were unable to produce myostatin showed markers of heart and metabolic health that were on a par with their lean counterparts and dramatically better than obese mice with uninhibited myostatin production.
Dr Butcher said: ‘In our muscular obese mouse, despite full presentation of obesity, it appears that several of these key pathologies are prevented.
‘While much more research is needed, at this point myostatin appears to be a very promising pathway for protection against obesity-derived cardiometabolic dysfunction.’
He added: ‘Ultimately, the goal of our research would be to create a pill that mimics the effect of exercise and protects against obesity.
‘A pill that inhibits myostatin could also have applications for muscle wasting diseases, such as cancer, muscle dystrophy and AIDS.’
He was due to present the findings at the American Physiological Society’s annual meeting in Chicago.
