Injuries continued to plague Australian Nick Kyrgios, who retired with a shoulder injury while losing 6-3 3-0 to American Tenny Sandgren at the Citi Open on Wednesday in Washington D.C. and left the court to a chorus of boos.
It marked the third successive tournament in which the 22-year-old retired during a match.
Kyrgios, playing his first tournament since he retired in the first round of Wimbledon due to a chronic hip injury, said mental problems and physical struggles had hurt his preparations.
“Just struggling, mentally, physically,” Kyrgios told reporters later.
He had called out the medical trainer for treatment on his shoulder before retiring and looked in obvious discomfort.
Kyrgios was playing in the second round after receiving an opening round bye and was seeded to play Germany’s Alexander Zverev in a keenly anticipated third-round match.

With a big smile, Fatemah Qaderyan, 14, the team captain, illustrated just how far girls, even from a challenging place like Afghanistan, could go if given the opportunity. Crucial to that, she repeated, was the support of her parents.
Tuesday night, Fatemah’s father, Mohammed Asef Qaderyan, 54, was killed when suicide bombers targeted hundreds of worshipers at a mosque near their home in the city of Herat.
Roya Mahboob, an Afghan technology entrepreneur who helped arrange the team’s trip to the United States, confirmed the news of the death. Jailani Farhad, a spokesman for the governor of Herat, also said that Mr. Qaderyan had been among those killed.
Store owners and tourists have been forced to evacuate at the Tsukiji fish market as the incident continues.
The Tokyo Fire Department reported that the building was burning at “Tsukiji fish market” in Tokyo from 3pm Thursday local time, NHK reports.
According to the Tokyo Fire Department and other media outlets, the fire started in a three-storey building. But local reports suggest there are three buildings now on fire since the main blaze broke out, making it a total of four fires.
Locals have told of how htey could smell smoke and ash 3.5km away near the famous Tokyo Tower.

Joshua, 27, had hoped Klitschko would sign his rematch clause for a proposed fight in Las Vegas on 11 November.
“I have achieved everything I dreamed of, and now I want to start my second career after sports,” said Klitschko.
The two-time former champion, who held the unified title from 2006-2015 before losing to Joshua’s fellow Briton Tyson Fury, ends his career with a record of 64 wins and five defeats.
“I would have never imagined that I would have such a long and incredibly successful boxing career,” he added.

A white car has struck a cyclist and a pedestrian outside Melbourne’s St Paul’s Cathedral in a peak hour hit-run incident.
The car, which did not have a number plate, stopped briefly before driving off. Police are now hunting for the driver.
A witness said the car had run a red light at the intersection of Swanston and Flinders streets before hitting the two men about 6.30pm.
An ambulance is at the scene and preparing to take one of the victims to hospital. Police confirmed the men are being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
A large number of police have closed at least one lane near the busy intersection.
Trams along Flinders Street are also being impacted.

Record producer and sound engineer Tony Cohen, who had a long and celebrated career working with Australian musicians including Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, the Go-Betweens and Paul Kelly, has died aged 60.
Tributes to Cohen, who won three ARIA awards, have begun flowing on social media following a statement on Twitter from his brother Martin, who said Tony Cohen “passed away peacefully in Dandenong Hospital” earlier this week.
“Tony was a legend of Australian music,” his brother wrote. “As brothers we were like chalk and cheese. But, I loved him and fully respect what he achieved in his career. He was technically brilliant, but also a caring, big-hearted man.”
Songwriter, singer and guitarist Kim Salmon, who worked with Cohen on several recording projects, including two Kim Salmon and the Surrealists’ albums in the mid-1990s and the Beasts of Bourbon, described Cohen as “a true great”, adding on his Facebook post it was “an absolute privilege working with him but an even greater honour to count him as a friend”…

However, Oakes is perhaps best known for his career in television. In 1980 he read then-treasurer John Howard’s budget speech live on television – a day before the budget was due to be handed down.
Oakes told Channel Nine of all his explosive stories, this was the one that caused “the biggest stink”.
“I met a contact in a hotel carpark on the Sunday morning,” he said. “He handed over the budget speech and gave me 15 minutes to read it. So I gabbled the whole lot into a tape recorder while he went in and had a quick drink, and then I transcribed it back at the office.”

Artist Claudia Sahuquillo uses naked bodies as canvases to paint beautiful works of art and, in doing so, hopes to normalise nudity.
Sahuquillo paints patterns including eyes, feathers and flowers on people’s bodies in bright bursts of colour.
Much of her work focuses on painting across women’s bare breasts, which enables her to share her work on social media without it being removed.
The body painter, from Barcelona, shares most of her work on Instagram using the hashtag #skinisthenewcanvas. The unique subject has gained her more than 50,000 followers.
Sahuquillo’s work aims to normalise nudity by celebrating the beauty of the human body and its form – showing it is “normal, free and not vulgar”.
According to blogger Sara Daniele, who attended one of Sahuquillo’s live body painting shows in Naples, the focus of the artist’s work “is not on the bodies of models, but in the search for ‘normal’ people with different aesthetics to each other and without fear of any defects”.

The action alleges more than 53,700 contraventions of the act.
CBA acknowledged that the civil proceedings had been brought and said it would have more to say on the specific claims “in due course”.
A statement of claim filed in the Federal Court referred to at least four different money laundering syndicates that are alleged to have used CBA ATMs, but the bank failed to report suspicious activity as required.
“The effect of CommBank’s conduct in this matter has exposed the Australian community to serious and ongoing financial crime,” the statement said.

An Australian nurse has been jailed for 18 months in Cambodia for providing commercial surrogacy services.
Tammy Davis-Charles was arrested in Phnom Penh in November last year, shortly after the Cambodian government had banned commercial surrogacy.
During her trial the 49-year-old denied the charges and said she only provided medical care to the surrogates.
Commercial surrogacy has grown in South East Asia in recent years, prompting some countries to take action.
In 2015 Thailand imposed a similar ban on foreigners seeking Thai surrogates, following a string of scandals.

The body of a school employee who had been missing for most of Wednesday after the blast at Minnehaha Academy was recovered that evening, Minneapolis Fire Chief John Fruetel told a news conference.
Fruetel declined to identify either victim pending notification of next of kin.
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported that the remains removed earlier in the day belonged to Ruth Berg, a 47-year-old receptionist at the school who was engaged to be married.
Family members earlier told local news channel KARE that John Carlson, an 81-year-old custodian, was missing and that no one had been able to reach him.
The nine people who were injured were taken to local hospitals, and one was in critical condition, Fruetel said.
Authorities say there are early indications that a ruptured gas line may have led to the explosion and that it was caused by contractors working at the school. The academy confirmed on Facebook that there had been a gas leak and explosion at its Upper School.
“This is a day of extraordinary heartbreak in Minneapolis,” Mayor Betsy Hodges told the news conference.
