By the numbers: Transgender serving in the US military; 1,320 and 6,630 active duty service members
Numbers from a 2016 Rand Corporation study show that the ban on transgender people in the military announced by Donald Trump may affect only a small percentage of the 1.3 million active duty service members currently enlisted.
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter that transgender people would not be allowed to serve in the U.S. “in any capacity,” but it is unclear how the ban would affect transgender people already serving.
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders was unable to say during a press briefing Wednesday how the new policy would be implemented.
Here are the numbers on transgender individuals in the U.S. military:
How many transgender individuals serve in the military?
Advocacy organizations have wide-ranging estimates on how many transgender people may be serving in the military.
The 2016 Rand study, titled “Assessing the Implications of Allowing Transgender Personnel to Serve Openly,” estimates that between 1,320 and 6,630 of 1.3 million active duty service members may be transgender.
A mid-range estimate states that 2,450 active duty service m

ISIS: tank rolls over car with suicide bombers caught on video
A VIDEO of an army tank driving over a car occupied by IS suicide bombers and 100kg of explosives before a deadly blast has been released.
The tank crew moved into action when they realised the car was on a suicide mission and lives were at risk near a military security checkpoint in North Sinai.
Along with three army vehicles, the Egyptian army tank tried to block the car but when it continued to move forward the tank rolled over it, crushing the occupants, in a bid to save lives.
Seven civilians, including two children, were killed when the car bomb exploded but the quick thinking of the tank crew appears to have averted a much higher death toll.
The explosion happened 200 metres from its military target, “when an Egyptian soldier used a tank to stop the vehicle,” according to an Egyptian army statement.
The victims — three men, two women and two children — “happened to be in the area in front of the ambush during the blast,” the statement added, without saying when the incident happened.
“The explosion was large, carrying about 100 kilograms of high explosives,” an army spokesman said in the statement.
Egypt’s military is battling a local affiliate of the Islamic State group that has waged a deadly insurgency in the northern Sinai, killings hundreds of members of the security forces.
Since December, IS has also targeted Christians in other parts of the country, including in Cairo, killing dozens.
The jihadists have threatened to carry out further attacks on Christians, who make up about 10 per cent of Egypt’s 90 million people.
The bombing by IS of a Russian airliner carrying holiday-makers from a South Sinai resort in 2015 killed all 224 people on board and severely damaged the country’s tourism sector.

Hungarian Grand Prix pivotal for #F1 frontrunners and backmarkers
Only one race remains before Formula One takes its annual rest for the summer – a break that after the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend may weigh heavier on some shoulders than others. The next few days will be potentially as instructive in the fight for the world championship as any we have seen thus far. Only a sliver separates Lewis Hamilton from Sebastian Vettel at the top of the table but Budapest has more import than just who will hold the lead when racing returns at Spa at the end of August.
The gap between Mercedes and Ferrari has been close all season. From the moment the Scuderia hit the ground running at testing we saw a proper fight at the front. But with new regulations it was also clear that victory would not necessarily go to the swiftest at the start of the season but the team who could develop their car most effectively to its end
During the early races the two teams were on a par, indeed, if anything in race pace Ferrari seemed to have the edge over the previously dominant Mercedes. The latter had struggled with balance, set-up and putting their tyres into the correct temperature operating window. They had been set back it is understood by the FIA ban on the suspension system they had intended to use and were learning about the car on the go. Hamilton in particular struggled in Sochi and Monaco. The latter was noted by the team’s executive director, Toto Wolff, as the point at which they identified their problems and began to turn things round.
Hamilton now trails Vettel by one point after his victory at the British Grand Prix and he has some momentum but more ominously for Ferrari he may well now have the car under him he has sought all season…
Two German U.N. Peacekeepers Killed in Mali Helicopter Crash
Mali is home to the world’s deadliest active U.N. mission
A U.N. peacekeeping helicopter crashed Wednesday in the desert in northern Mali and two German peacekeepers were killed, U.N. officials said.
U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said the crash took place south of Tabankort in Mali’s northern Gao region. He said officials were still working to verify details of the crash, including its cause and possible casualties.
“Preliminary indications show there was a technical failure. Investigations are opened to determine the exact circumstances of the crash,” said a statement by the U.N. mission in Mali. “The helicopter had two peacekeepers on board who, unfortunately, both died.”
Mali is home to the world’s deadliest active U.N. mission. Haq said due to the confrontations on the ground with radical jihadists, the crash site would have to be secured before personnel could reach the scene.
Ahmad Makaila, a spokesman based in Mali with the U.N. mission known as MINUSMA, said earlier that two Germans were on board the helicopter and later confirmed that they were killed.

‘He was just holding scissors’: Brother of man shot in Sydney criticises police
The brother of a man shot dead by police at Sydney’s Central Station has hit out at the officers involved, saying they did not need to fire at his sibling.
Danukul Mokmool threatened florist Manuel Theoharas with a broken bottle before grabbing a pair of scissors and threatening police about 6:45pm on Wednesday.
Officers from the Transport Command fired four shots, killing Mr Mokmool.
His brother Charlie Huynh said his 30-year-old half-brother, known as Dan, was a kind person who had battled mental health problems for the past 10 years.
Speaking at the family home in Heckenberg, in Sydney’s south-west, Mr Huynh said his brother was critical of police.
“They could have done something better than just shooting him,” he said.
“Come on, like, he was just holding scissors.

McDonald’s employee fired for sharing photo; think twice before ordering a soft serve!
If you intend to eat McDonald’s soft serve ice-cream ever again, we recommend you read no further.
An ex-employee of the popular fast-food chain has allegedly been fired after sharing a disgusting photo of the soft serve machine’s stainless steel drip tray which is covered in grime and mould, according to reports.
In an image shared to his Twitter account, a man known as Nick, also followed up with a number of photos showing grease on the floors as well as some of the frozen foods he’d allegedly pulled from the freezer.
However, social media users were quick to defend the company saying the cleanliness of the store depends on the franchise and its management.
Speaking to the Huffington Post, Nick said sometimes his co-workers would drop food on the floor before picking it up and putting it back in the bun…

Pakistan village council orders ‘revenge rape’ of girl after her brother was accused of rape
A teenager in Multan is raped by order of a village council after her brother was accused of rape.
Some 20 people from Multan, Pakistan, have been arrested for ordering the rape of a teenage girl, in revenge for a rape her brother allegedly committed.
Police said the families of the two girls are related.
Members of both had joined forces to decide what should be done.
“A jirga [village council] had ordered the rape of a 16-year-old girl as punishment, as her brother had raped a 12-year-old,” police official Allah Baksh told AFP.
He said the village council was approached earlier this month by a man who said his 12-year-old sister had been raped by their cousin.
The council then ordered the complainant to rape the sister of the accused in return – which police say he did.
Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper reported that the girl was forced to appear before the group and raped in front of them and her parents.
The mothers of the two girls later filed complaints at the local police station.
Medical examinations have confirmed rape in both cases.

Happy to be alive: NSW shooting witness
A Sydney florist who had a broken bottle held to his throat moments before his attacker was shot dead says he is happy to be alive.
Manuel Theoharis was at his shop at Central Station about 6.30pm on Wednesday when a man since identified as 30-year-old Danukul Mokmool allegedly grabbed him from behind and threatened him with a bottle.
Mr Theoharis, 73, says he initially thought his attacker was a friend playfully surprising him until he felt the jagged glass pressed against his neck.
He managed to escape the man’s grip before he grabbed a pair of scissors and kicked over buckets of flowers, breaking vases.
Police shot the intruder after he allegedly refused to put down the scissors.
Mr Theoharis said officers had escorted him around the corner when he heard loud shots.
“I feel sorry for him, he’s not alive and I’m happy. I have my life but I could be where he is,” he told AAP.
“I was in trouble.”
Cleaning up broken glass and scattered flowers with family and friends on Thursday morning, Mr Theoharis said the man didn’t ask for money.
“The only thing he said was, ‘Call the police, don’t move’.”
Salim, who owns the kebab shop near the florist, rushed out after he heard people screaming.
He said he saw the elderly florist, who he has worked alongside at the station for years, covered with blood.
“I heard a noise – three shots – but I only realised what it was after I heard someone screaming,” he said.
Salim said he saw the suspected attacker lying on the ground surrounded by police as he rushed past to help his injured friend.
A police critical incident investigation team has been formed to investigate all aspects of the shooting, including the discharge of firearms.
That information will be handed to the coroner and police are appealing for witnesses.
