Aldi will start selling alcohol in Perth stores from today

THE entry of discount behemoth Aldi Australia into the Perth liquor retail scene has the potential to turn the already red-hot discounting battleground white-hot.

Discount liquor has become a way of life, with some of the deals being dangled in front of thirsty shoppers hard to comprehend when compared with the recommended retail prices.

But that’s what most outlets have had to do to stay competitive.

And it has been good news for customers who continue to benefit from access to excellent wines at very cheap prices.

Aldi brings its liquor offering to five locations — South Lake, Butler, Harrisdale, Joondalup and Wattle Grove — from today, and I tasted six of 63 wines that are part of their initial offering. Not a big sample, I know, but still, about 10 per cent of what they are carrying.
