Perth officer caught on camera texting while driving. One rule for them, then?

A Perth truck driver appears to have caught a policeman using his mobile phone while driving despite a ‘zero-tolerance approach’ towards the crime.

The officer can be seen parked over the white line at a traffic light in Perth, looking down at a device in his hands.

The truck driver told The West the policeman looked at him then returned to using his phone.

‘What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.’

The road train driver, who chose to remain anonymous, says he watched the police car roll up and ‘looked twice’ after appearing to see the officer using his phone.

‘You can see quite clearly that he overshot the white line and that’s only because he was texting,’ he said.

The incident occurred in Morley at about 9am on Tuesday morning, and the truck driver says it was particularly dangerous for cyclists when cars pass the white line at traffic lights.

‘Not only am I a career road train operator but I’m also a very avid cyclist. I reckon one of the biggest dangers to cyclists is people texting and he overshot that white line,’ he said.

The truck driver, who admits to using his phone while driving in the past, said he will be satisfied if the officer just gets a ‘rap over the knuckles.’

WA Police have said they will investigate the incident with the policeman but say there are circumstances when officers are above the law and need to use their phones when behind the wheel.
