DEMAND for Ed Sheeran tickets has seen the English pop superstar add another show to the Perth leg of his tour Down Under.
The second show will be held on March 2 — the night before what was originally his first show at the new Perth Stadium on March 3.
He has also added extra shows in Melbourne on March 9, Sydney on March 15 and on April 1 in Dunedin, New Zealand.
The boost in show numbers to 18 means Sheeran’s Divide world tour is the biggest in Australian and New Zealand music history.
Sheeran’s popularity has seen him smash the Australasian record for the largest number of stadium shows in one single tour.
Promoter Frontier Touring announced today that the additional shows meant “a phenomenal 18-date stadium run across Australia and New Zealand”.
His initial 14 shows were equal to AC/DC’s 2010 record.
“The announcement comes off the back of Ed selling more than 710,000 tickets by the conclusion of the first day of general public on-sale,” Frontier said.
“With these newly announced shows he will surpass Dire Straits’ long-standing record of an estimated 900,000 ticket sales from their 1986 Brothers In Arms tour.
“Ed has also set new records for the most stadium shows on one tour at Forsyth Barr in Dunedin with three shows and at Etihad in Melbourne with four shows.”
Scalpers came under fire this week after they tried to take advantage of Sheeran’s sold-out shows.
Fans risk having their tickets cancelled if they have been bought through unauthorised resellers.
The problem has also prompted the State Government to warn that profiteering will be outlawed.
“I’ve always loved coming to Australia and New Zealand,” Sheeran said today.
