Netflix has bowed to customer pressure and launched nine new TV drama following complaints that there has been nothing worth watching on the streaming service for months on end.
British television series ‘Peaky Blinders’ and US comedy series ‘Orange is the New Black’ have been among the nine new dramas gracing the service within the couple of weeks, its vice president of original content Cindy Holland said.
Other new shows to look out for would be Unbreakable Kimmy Schmitt, Ben Hur, House of Cards Season 5, All Hail King Julien: Exiled, War Machine, Glow and Gypsy all expected to be rolled out from May 19 till June 30.
For years our lives had to fit around television, now it’s the other way around.
‘We’ve given consumers control and it’s interesting to see the behaviours that emerge when viewers aren’t tied to a schedule.
‘And even more so to see that these routines are replicated by millions the world over,’ Holland said.
Besides high drama, cartoon viewing time for Australian and New Zealander viewers will now start at 5am, one of the earliest streaming slots in the world.
Cartoon lovers would be able to begin the day with the mermaids of H20: Just Add Water and the Baudelaire brood from A Series of Unfortunate Events.
Netflix says despite the complaints, the streaming service has recorded an uptake of five percent increase among viewers watching afternoon and 2pm dramas to 47 percent.
Meanwhile, midday streaming is extremely popular in Brazil where 25 percent of the users were more likely to watch a series in the day as compared to the rest of the world – proving that comedy shows like ‘Shameless’ and ‘Orange is the New Black’ was not an evening fare.
The US entertainment company founded by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in 1997 also revealed its peak streaming time for Australia and New Zealand which was at 9pm, India at 5pm while Argentina and Singapore was at 10pm.
